Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 213. Rumors IV
Angel inclined his head in gratitude, his smile radiating warmth and appreciation. His gaze shifted from the departing figures of the long-robed man and woman to Frost. A flicker of anticipation gleamed within his eyes as he addressed him with an air of authority laced with familiarity.
"Thank you for your service," Angel expressed, his voice carrying a touch of admiration. "Both of you may take your leave. There are matters I wish to discuss with General Frost in private," he added, emphasizing the need for confidentiality.
With synchronized grace, the long-robed duo bowed in unison, their gestures imbued with an aura of respect and deference. The velvety folds of their robes cascaded down their bodies as they shed their disguise, revealing the true nature of their roles. The man donned the attire of the Euphorion army. The woman, on the other hand, adorned herself in the modest garb of a servant.
One by one, they departed the room, their footsteps echoing softly against the tapestry-lined corridors.
As the door closed, Angel motioned for General Frost to take a seat, the plush cushions of the sofa inviting respite and camaraderie. "Sit down, Frost. Before I continue, how was the trip? Do you have anything to report?"
Frost settled onto the sofa, his posture poised and composed. His eyes, sharp and discerning, met Angel's in a silent acknowledgment of the gravity of their exchange. With a note of concern lacing his words, he broached the topic that had been swirling amidst the kingdom's whispers.
"The journey proceeded without incident, Your Majesty," Frost began, his voice steady and measured. "However, I must address the prevalent rumors that have taken root within the kingdom. There are whispers, spreading like wildfire, that you have fallen victim to a grave injury. Should I initiate an investigation to dispel these unfounded claims?"
Angel leaned forward, his voice lowering to a conspiratorial tone. "There's no need to worry, Frost. I intentionally disseminated the rumor as a clever ploy to ensnare a specific individual," he revealed, a mischievous glimmer dancing in his eyes.
Frost's brows furrowed slightly, a mixture of curiosity and concern etching his features. "If I may ask, Your Majesty, who is the target of this trap?"
A faint smile tugged at the corners of Angel's lips. "Ilex, of course. Make sure these rumors reach his ears," he replied, his voice brimming with a sense of purpose.
With a nod of understanding, Frost acknowledged his sovereign's intent. "Very well, Your Majesty. If that is all, I have no further reports to present," he stated, his tone tinged with a hint of relief.
Angel reclined comfortably in his seat, his mind already moving on to the next course of action. "Excellent," he declared. "Here is what I propose, Frost. Whenever inquiries arise regarding my condition, kindly inform them that I am in good health. However, I wish to remain sequestered, unaccessible to visitors during this time," he instructed, his voice carrying a hint of authority.
Frost nodded, his eyes reflecting a mixture of determination and caution. "Understood, Your Majesty. I shall ensure that the kingdom is informed accordingly, as per your instructions. As for the rumor of your serious injury, I shall see to it that it spreads far and wide, reaching the shores of Asteria within the next two days," he affirmed, his loyalty unwavering.
“But there is one thing that bothers me, Your Majesty.” Concern etched across Frost's features as he voiced his apprehension. "Forgive me for my audacity, but could this rumor not pose a threat to Euphorion's security? It may invite adversaries to take advantage of the perceived vulnerability," he pointed out, his duty to protect the kingdom foremost in his mind.
A sly smile curved Angel's lips as he leaned forward, his gaze meeting Frost's with an air of calculated confidence. "Rest assured, I have foreseen this potential hazard," he assured, his tone laced with assurance. "I have entrusted Flare to fortify our defenses throughout Euphorion. Our security measures have been heightened, with spies deployed to neighboring kingdoms, monitoring any suspicious activities that may pose a threat to our sovereignty," he explained, his voice resonating with strategic foresight.
Angel's expression hardened slightly, his voice was resolute. "If anyone dares to foment rebellion during this fragile period, we shall be prepared to quell them swiftly and decisively," he declared, his words laced with unwavering determination. "By enticing potential adversaries to reveal their hand, we shall expose their true intentions and crush them once and for all."
