Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 220. Revolt III
The battle raged on as the Asterian troops regrouped and surrounded the Euphorion royal couple, their relentless assault an unyielding tide crashing against Angel's barrier. The clash of swords and the thunderous cries of combatants echoed through the hall, drowning out all other sounds. Yet, Angel remained resolute, his focus unwavering as he maintained the protective shield around himself and Rose.
The strain of the relentless onslaught was taking its toll on Angel. His hands trembled with exhaustion, his breath came in ragged gasps, and his face, usually defined by an air of serenity, now bore the marks of weariness and a ghostly pallor. Every ounce of his being was dedicated to preserving the barrier that shielded them both from imminent danger.
Ilex, his eyes glinting with malevolent glee, reveled in the visible signs of Angel's struggle. His voice dripped with a twisted delight as he taunted his former cousin.
"Angelus Raizel, what's wrong with you?" Ilex sneered, his voice laced with a cruel mockery. "Why does your face look so pale? Is it possible that the rumors that you are seriously injured are true?"
Angel's silence spoke volumes as he locked his gaze onto Ilex, his eyes ablaze with a potent mix of anger, determination, and a touch of sorrow. The weight of the situation bore heavily upon him.
Behind Angel, Rose's eyes darted anxiously around the hall, her expression etched with worry and unease. Her thoughts raced, desperately seeking a glimmer of a solution amidst the chaos that threatened to consume them. She had always been the voice of reason, the calming presence at Angel's side, but now even her serene demeanor was tinged with apprehension.
"Princess Rose, what is it that you seek?" Ilex's voice dripped with sarcasm, his words laced with sadistic pleasure as he reveled in the torment of those he once claimed to care for. His face twisted into a sinister grin, a cruel parody of amusement.
"If you're searching for your precious general and elite troops, I'm afraid you'll be sorely disappointed," Ilex taunted, his words slicing through the air like shards of glass. "I've eliminated them all. A fitting punishment for those who dared to oppose me."
The grand hall stood as a tense battleground, where emotions clashed and loyalties were tested. Rose's eyes, filled with a mix of determination and accusation, locked onto Ilex. Her voice, though firm, trembled with an undercurrent of betrayal.
"Prince Ilex! You orchestrated this entire scheme, didn't you? You set this trap to ensnare us!" Rose's accusation cut through the air, her words laced with a mix of anger and disbelief. Her mind raced, connecting the dots and unraveling the intricacies of Ilex's treacherous plot.
Ilex, a self-satisfied smirk playing upon his lips, reveled in the chaos he had wrought. He basked in the power he had seized, his eyes alight with a wicked gleam. The grandeur of his ambition had clouded his judgment, blinding him to the consequences of his actions.
Meanwhile, King Gervis, his regal composure momentarily shattered, descended from his throne with an air of authority. His face contorted with a mixture of frustration and disappointment as he attempted to approach Angel and Rose, only to be blocked by the imposing presence of the Asterian troops. The realization of Ilex's betrayal cut deep, tarnishing the honor and reputation of their once-proud family.
"Ilex, that's enough!" King Gervis snapped, his voice laden with a blend of stern authority and paternal concern. His gaze bore into Ilex's, a silent plea for reason. "Do you truly wish to bring disgrace upon our family, to stain our legacy with this senseless act of violence?" King Gervis regarded his son with a mix of exasperation and concern, his brows furrowed in consternation.
"Don't you see, Father?" Ilex's voice resonated with an unwavering conviction. "I am not seeking to disgrace our family. Quite the contrary, I aim to restore our long-forgotten glory, to reshape the destiny of our lineage. The path I have chosen may appear treacherous, but it is one I tread with unwavering resolve."
Angel turned to Rose, his eyes conveying a mix of concern and unwavering resolve.
"Rose," Angel gasped, his breath coming in ragged bursts, "Ilex is solely focused on me. I will create an opening for you to escape." His body was growing increasingly unsteady. Yet, in the face of impending danger, he remained resolute.
