Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 227. Wicked VI
"But that's fine," Ilex sneered, his voice oozing with a sickening satisfaction. "My previous failures have paved the way for my ultimate triumph. The poison, unbeknownst to Angel, had a far greater impact than I had anticipated. It weakened him, making him susceptible to the manipulations I had carefully orchestrated. By trapping you, Rose, I ensured that he would risk everything, even his own life, to come to your aid."
As Ilex advanced toward Rose, her anger burned with a newfound intensity. She stood her ground, unwilling to succumb to fear in the face of this calculated monster.
Her voice trembled with a mixture of rage and defiance. "The rebel attack on the border last week... Was that also your doing?"
A sinister grin spread across Ilex's face, his eyes gleaming with a twisted delight in the chaos he had orchestrated. The echoes of his laughter reverberated through the hall, drowning out any lingering shred of humanity within him.
"Oh, my dear Rose," Ilex chuckled, his voice laced with malice. "I had hoped that the rebels would be successful in their assault, that they would deliver the final blow to Angel while you were caught in the crossfire. Alas, he proved to be more stubborn than I had anticipated. It seems I will have to take matters into my own hands to ensure his demise."
The air crackled with tension as King Gervis, his voice laced with disbelief, confronted Ilex with a mixture of surprise and disappointment. The revelation of Ilex's collaboration with the rebels struck a devastating blow to the king's trust in his own son.
"Ilex! You were working with the rebels?" King Gervis' voice quivered with a mix of shock and dismay. The weight of his words hung heavily in the air, a testament to the shattered bonds of family and the betrayal that had taken root.
Ilex turned to face his father, his gaze unyielding and resolute. There was a flicker of defiance in his eyes, an unapologetic determination that mirrored the dark path he had chosen to tread.
"Father, I did what was necessary for the sake of our family's survival!" Ilex's voice resonated with a chilling conviction. "Look around you now, witness the triumph I have achieved! With his death, Asteria is once again firmly in our grasp."
The king recoiled at the audacity of Ilex's claim. A mixture of anger and sorrow contorted his features as he grappled with the devastating reality before him. The once-united Reinheart family now stood divided, fractured by Ilex's insidious machinations and the irreparable damage he had inflicted upon their legacy.
"You have proven yourself unworthy of the royal blood that flows through your veins!" King Gervis' voice thundered through the hall, his words a damning indictment of his son's actions. The weight of his disappointment bore heavily upon him, threatening to crush his spirit.
"You don't deserve to be a part of the royal family!" Rose's voice rang out, filled with a potent mix of anguish and anger. The weight of Ilex's actions bore down upon her, threatening to crush her spirit beneath their crushing force.
Ilex, unmoved by Rose's outburst, fixed her with a steely gaze. A cold smile curled upon his lips as he mocked her with callous disregard. His words cut through the air like sharpened daggers, each one intended to inflict maximum pain.
"Don't deserve? Oh, my dear Princess Rose, it is he who didn't deserve the privileges bestowed upon him!" Ilex's voice dripped with scorn, his eyes narrowing with disdain. He turned his attention fully to Rose, his voice dripping with malevolence. "I must say, I feel a certain pity for you. Your engagement to Prince Artheur crumbled into ruins, and then you married Angelus Raizel, only to have him meet his untimely demise. You must be feeling quite desolate and alone in this world... Perhaps I should offer you some company tonight?"
Rose's heart constricted with a mixture of sorrow and fury. The wounds of her past were freshly torn open by Ilex's cruel taunts, and his audacity to further degrade her in front of all was an affront to her very being. She refused to allow his words to diminish her strength.
"Prince Ilex!" Artheur's voice rang out with a thunderous command, his anger seeping through every syllable. "Watch your words! You have taken her husband's life, and now you seek to humiliate her further in the presence of all?"
