Zhang Shi Lan looked at Yu Huang Rong, his heart speeding up, and took a trembling breath. He wasn’t sure if he understood right. No, that wasn’t right. He had understood. He had seen it before the dance these words just now … It wasn’t that he didn’t understand. He just couldn’t believe it. Maybe all of this was a dream?
He looked at Yu Huang Rong, gazing deep into those eyes and finally had to admit to himself that this was indeed the reality. He was indeed here, sitting in this garden with General Yu, his hand held in the bigger hand of the man he loved, a love confession still ringing in his ears.
Yu Huang Rong couldn’t help but get anxious when the other person didn’t answer. He had been sure that Zhang Shi Lan loved him but just in case that he and Madam Yan were both wrong, he’d rather hear it from himself. He squeezed Zhang Shi Lan’s hand and leaned closer. "Scholar Zhang, is it that you don’t have feelings for me? Was I surmising too much? If that was the case, then …"
"No!" Zhang Shi Lan reached out with his other hand, holding onto Yu Huang Rong’s before he knew what he was doing. His expression blanked when he understood what had happened. He looked at the General, taking another shaky breath while his gaze flitted about.
He wanted to turn away and take his hand away but Yu Huang Rong caught it and pulled it back, securing it between his.
"No? What do you mean with that? No, I wasn’t surmising too much? Or no, you don’t have feelings for me? Be honest with me, Zhang Shi Lan. I won’t be able to take if you just stay silent. So you’ll have to say it. Either you say, yes, I love you, or you say no, I don’t love you. You have to decide."
Zhang Shi Lan looked back up into Yu Huang Rong’s eyes. How often had he imagined this moment? How often had he confessed in those dreams? So shouldn’t this be a dream come true? Then why was it so hard? He gave half a smile and gathered his courage to brush the back of Yu Huang Rong’s hand with his fingers. "I do. But my family —"
Before he could say another word, Yu Huang Rong leaned forward, one of his hands reaching over and a finger pressing against Zhang Shi Lan’s lips. "Sh." He took the scholar’s smaller hands into his other and rubbed them with his thumb. "Don’t say any more of that. Just 'I do' is enough."
Zhang Shi Lan furrowed his brows. "But —"
Yu Huang Rong chuckled and leaned over, his lips sealing the rest of the words.
Zhang Shi Lan stopped thinking. All protest was blown away and his body grew limp. Thankfully, Yu Huang Rong had already moved closer and caught him in his arms.
"You don’t have to worry about any of that. I love you and you love me. That’s the most important. Everything else can be taken care of. Right?"
Zhang Shi Lan nodded even though he had no idea just how this 'taking care of' should look. To him, it had never been a question of whether this was possible not. He had always known that it could just be a dream. Hearing something else from Yu Huang Rong now … He didn’t know what to make of that.
Yu Huang Rong smiled, his fingers brushing through Zhang Shi Lan’s hair. "I’ve talked to the matchmaker. She said that if I’m able to win you over, then she will help us. She already has an idea on how to deal with our families."
Zhang Shi Lan looked up, his eyes widening. "You talked to the matchmaker? Madam Yan?"
Yu Huang Rong nodded. "I guess she knew from the very beginning that something was up. I only asked her about it after the first event. I told her that there was no way I’d want to marry anyone but you." He pulled Zhang Shi Lan’s hands over and held them in his lap, caressing the skin. "I was very unhappy when I saw you there. Just the thought of you getting married to somebody else …" He shook his head. "Zhang Shi Lan, I’m afraid I won’t be able to let you go. You have to stick with me now."
Zhang Shi Lan nodded. If what he said was true and Madam Yan had a way, then naturally, he would follow. He couldn’t imagine how but if it enabled him to be with the man he loved, then of course, he wouldn’t say no. "I don’t understand any of this but … just tell me what to do. I’ll do my part."
Yu Huang Rong nodded and leaned over, kissing his cheek. "Then I’ll go and ask her about the next step as soon as possible. Unfortunately, she’s a little secretive. Even I myself don’t know what will happen next. Let’s let her surprise us, shall we?"
Zhang Shi Lan nodded and closed his eyes. He still couldn’t believe that all of this was real. When he opened his eyes again, Yu Huang Rong was still sitting next to him, looking at him with a gentle smile. His hands were still being held in those of the General, feeling warm and secure. "I really don’t understand how all of this happened."
Yu Huang Rong chuckled. "Somebody was careless one day and almost fell into the river. That’s where it started. Then somebody was careless and lost his heart. Somebody else was careless as well, not noticing that that heart was with him. Then it took some years and then that latter careless somebody saw an elegant young man very politely scolding some juniors."
Zhang Shi Lan’s cheeks flushed red. He looked at Yu Huang Rong and wanted to say something but no words came out.
Yu Huang Rong laughed. "Back then, you had so many words to say. How come you don’t even get a single one out when in front of me? I would’ve understood if this was still a secret crush. But now, am I not the man you’re going to marry?"
His question made Zhang Shi Lan even more unable to say anything. He could only lower his head, his cheeks flushed crimson. "Please, do not tease me."
Yu Huang Rong nodded and raised one of Zhang Shi Lan’s hands, lowering his head and pressing a kiss onto the knuckles. "Whatever it is you want. I’d certainly do it."
He looked up and their gazes met.
Zhang Shi Lan couldn’t help but smile. Up until now, he had only ever heard the official news about Yu Huang Rong and seen him every now and then. He had never had the chance to get to know him any better though. Seeing this side of him, that also wasn’t bad. "Then what should I do now?"
Yu Huang Rong nodded to the side. "Well, I’ve ordered a lot of dishes. You could take whatever you want. Let’s start with that?"
Zhang Shi Lan nodded and tried to take his hands back. A certain someone held on securely though. "General Yu —"
"That sounds so distant. How about calling me Yu Huang Rong? Or Huang Rong? Or Ah Rong?"
Zhang Shi Lan gave a careful smile. "If I do, then will we eat?"
Yu Huang Rong looked at that smile and his heart thumped heavily. "Call me husband and I’ll even feed you."
Zhang Shi Lan couldn’t help but laugh. "Well, you can do so in the future if all of this works out. For now, I think Huang Rong would be alright if we’re alone. When we’re outside …" He pondered. They had only met twice as far as anyone knew. It would be strange if they would suddenly seem too familiar with each other. "I do not know what Madam Yan said but I don’t think it would be good to seem too close just yet. Let’s just keep calling each other as we did before. After a while, we can use our given names."
Yu Huang Rong clicked his tongue. "You’re too sensible. I feared as much. But well, I guess it’s true. Let’s do it that way then."
He let go of Zhang Shi Lan’s hands even though he didn’t want to and picked up the chopsticks, starting to pick out some of the vegetarian dishes and placing them in Zhang Shi Lan’s bowl.
The scholar couldn’t help but smile. "Did you already think of this when you asked before?"
Yu Huang Rong shook his head. "I only thought of it at that exact moment. I saw you eating and felt that I wanted to know more. And also … You were being so quiet. You made me feel a little … afraid." He stopped with the chopsticks in his hand and gave Zhang Shi Lan a serious look. "Before, when I said that I was thinking about you, that was true. Back on the battlefield, I thought a lot of you. It’s just that … I wasn’t too sure before if you would understand it the right way and I was afraid I had said too much so I tried to explain it in some other way. I’m sorry. I just blurted it out without thinking. Despite all those years on the battlefield I still lose control much too easily when it concerns you. I guess I’m still just a man out of flesh and blood."
Zhang Shi Lan smiled. "That’s also good. I wouldn’t have you any other way." He took his chopsticks and picked up a piece of meat, placing it in Yu Huang Rong’s bowl. "I didn’t ask before but I guess General Yu would like eating meat."
Yu Huang Rong nodded. "I do. Although … I guess I would like eating anything that you gave me." He looked at Zhang Shi Lan and his gaze deepened. "Shi Lan, I’m really happy today."
Zhang Shi Lan nodded. "I’m also very happy today. Yu Huang Rong."
The two of them took their bowls and started to eat, falling silent again. At this moment, they were only happy that they were together and that despite what they had thought before, a future between them might not be impossible.
So cute! It's official. I'm content! If I die at this moment, this guy's going to the underworld without any regrets. I saw the light at the end of the tunnel and it made me so happy!
Noooo! Don't die yet! There's still more cute stuff to come
@yansusustories I'll hold on as much as I can to the very end if I have to. I must see the both of them get married. That'll be my next death trigger
@Blue_Spider_Lily Eh, I feel like I should better hurry to start on the next volume or you'll really drop dead on this novel
Oh, but I am a bit worried about ZSL's wellbeing. I already said I can't predict plots to save my life but ZSL being so self-doubting and easily-distracted back into hesitation and guilt-tripping by his family makes me feel like this confession might still not overpower his issues...
What if this is still too early and YHR's mentions of marriage will only feel like pushing ZSL when he isn't yet ready to commit to this idea fully?
I hope they can resolve this issue but knowing how many chapters are left, I am a bit concerned about the likelihood of it
This author-sama is twisty +_+.
This author-sama is twisty +_+.
I confess I might be But I won't say anything about it ~
@yansusustories ah, your patience against spoiling something to your readers is admirable. I am such a spoiler-slut. If I get asked, I just go blaaaa... but that's not only confined to book discussions, I suppose
Anyway, respect to the spoiler-free author
@Queenfisher *ahem* That actually totally depends on which story you're asking about I have not that much of a problem keeping my mouth shut for stuff that's finished or rather short overall but ... the poor people reading OMF can count themselves lucky that they haven't gotten a detailed explanation of the ending yet
@yansusustories ^^. I was walking about that one since a long ago, but the length intimidated me at first! But I do think that it's the next I'd give a read. Although it says it updates daily but has paused lately? Hope you're still writing it!
@Queenfisher Oh, yeah, I actually am. It's just that I'm currently finishing up a course and only have until the end of September for that so I'm taking a small hiatus to have more time for studying. The one on ScribbleHub is the revised version though so you can basically just start reading here and then jump over to the original version pretty close to where we're currently at if you do want to start already
@yansusustories Thanks for explaining. I was pondering about asking you what would be your personal advise on the order of reading your books because some of them are sequels/spin-offs of each other, and it kind of gets confusing at some point!
Hope you will have rested well after the hiatus! And study hard! *_*
@Queenfisher I'm afraid I'll feel pretty dead after the hiatus but then again, I often do Work-life balance was not a word created for me
As for the order ... Well, it's not much of an issue for the standalone novels (so "Madam Yan's Matchmaking Pavilion" and "Finders Keepers") so those can be read at any time. Where it's a bit of an issue are the others although there's not really a order you'd need to keep to since I try to keep them separate as much as possible.
Basically, "Lovely Writing System" (LWS) is finished. "Second Male Lead to One, Male Lead to Another" (SML) is the direct spin-off to that (and not finished yet) with the ML being one of the previous side characters. So it's probably best to read them in that order. SML is understandable without knowing LWS though.
Then there's "Like a Ray in My Night" (RMN) which is the novel version of a short story in LWS (LWS is about an author reading and writing stories, basically, and RMN was the first one he wrote in there). It can be read totally independently of LWS (even more so than SML since there are no characters of LWS in there at all) and it basically depends on whether or not you'd like to see the short story first or the novel I think both can be really fun since you'll see the main characters again anyway.
Now, here is where it gets complicated: Because RMN was on one chapter per week schedule at first, I left some stuff of the early years out (so we'd get to the relevant plot faster) and migrated some stories from those early years into "A Little Bunny Looking at the Moon" (LBM). It's basically just some cute, fluffy kid playing around with his senior martial brothers and having a major crush on the ML already. I think I would advise reading that only after starting RMN because you know the MC already by then and might be more fun to see how he grew up.
So basically, for those, it's basically two lines of reading: LWS > SML and RMN > LBM while you can totally switch with which line you'd like to start first.
The other conundrum is "Oh. My. Fate?!" (OMF) with the prequel "Romancing the Son of Heaven" (RSH) and "Oh. My. Extra?!" (which doesn't get an abbreviation ). I personally think it makes more sense to start with OMF since neither is finished yet and it might be confusing to read up on RSH until where it's currently at only to jump several years into the future when OMF starts So, if this was me, I'd start OMF here on SH until the latest chapter, then switch over to the original version and continue reading until the volume "Secret Realm Prisoner" or so before slowly starting on RSH maybe (you could do that earlier though but it might be more fun only starting by then because of some plot stuff). The extras can pretty much be thrown in at any time although I'd wait until both meeting the characters "Jinde" and "Xiang Yu" since they appear preeeeeeetty often in them (what can I do? They're both reader and author favorites ) and it's definitely more enjoyable when you know them
So overall, the order there is likely OMF > RSH > Extras
Oh, and because I love messing with my readers the first LWS volume references OMF's first volume so some people might prefer starting on OMF before reading LWS but there are no huge spoilers, I swear! It's just more fun to see me shit-talk myself if you actually know OMF
@yansusustories Uhm ... I'm sorry for the wall of text I should probably start trying to write less complicated stuff ...
@yansusustories lol, wall of text never intimidates me!
And less complicated stuff is sometimes = less interesting stuff. Don't worry. There are always people who like "complicated" ^^.
Apart from your breakdown here, I enjoyed the PDF to OMF you put out ^^. I just noticed how extensive the OMF glossary is, too. Albeit no Glossary for MYMMPFM ... .
And your order makes perfect sense, by the way. OMF and LWS take priority, then ^^. And even better when simultaneously. Got it.
Thanks again!
@Queenfisher That's the benefit of being an avid reader and author I guess
Personally, I reeeeeaaaally enjoy the complicated stuff. I can't keep my fingers off that in writing (What can I do? It just happens ) and in reading, it's really great as well. Like, just re-discovering things I already know from another story? Maybe meeting characters again that I liked? Sounds like winning the literary lottery to me ~
Haha, well, I felt like MYMMP isn't that intricate that it needs one. Although I might change my mind on that if I really do write several volumes in the end But with fantasy stories, there's normally much more to explain so those are always more likely to get some form of glossary than just pseudo-historical ones.
OMF is ... well, we're more than 1k chapters in on the original version (and there are still at least 4 volumes to go ) and the revised version is going to be several hundred chapters longer than that so there's a ton of characters and places even by now with more to come in the future. It's probably really difficult to keep up with that as a reader since I'm only posting once a day.
@yansusustories Wow... and 1k chapters = how many volumes? I wonder if volumes are like physical books in this sense, like how something like Game of Thrones is published, separated into five books that would correspond to volumes in webnovel format?
I am curious because I am writing a series that would be traditionally divided into a trilogy, but I am wondering if -- in case I would publish it as a webnovel -- it should be one series with just different volumes marking the divides instead? Or would it be better to separate into several webnovel books?
Anyway, this is very interesting, and yes, I agree that fantasy is evil in regard to stuff that needs explaining . I feel so lost and frustrated whenever I need to spend time on making the information about my fantasies accessible to readers (who will invariably lose track of some trivia due to serialized nature of web fiction)... Contemporary prose and not-in-depth historical doesn't necessitate those to the same degree... But then, I never write anything but fantasy, so...
@Queenfisher Mn ... it's officially 7 volumes but I'm so going to split the 7th one in half because that alone is at 400 chapters right now (and there's actually an awesome split point smack dab in the middle that I should have used but I was too blind to see ), so I'd say it's actually 8.
And for me, it depends a bit on how you count it. Like, I think I mentioned before that I needed to split them up for the paperbacks? So, one web novel volume (aka, the 7/8 I currently have) would all be split into 3 paperback volumes at first so I can use a smaller format, and only after that do I make one big volume with the three combined. So far, only the 'first' one is out though and I personally haven't even seen the big one yet (too broke right now to buy it but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for being able to in October so I could say how well that works by then). With self-publishing, it's always a bit tricky with bigger volumes since you never know how they turn out.
In regards to the trilogy, personally, I think I'd make that reliant on the content. Like, if it's something you'd only want people to read in the 'right' order (like, 1, 2, then 3), then I'd make it one series with different volumes. If you say, screw it, it's not important because the parts can be read like stand-alone novels as well, then you could make it a book per volume. The thing is that readers online can be pretty lazy and often don't search for other volumes if they're separated. I've actually had people start on volume two or three and then wonder why they didn't know all the characters over on Wattpad where I had to split since they only allow 200 chapters per book
Oh, yes, that's so true. I've only started with contemporary stuff since I started with bl and it's really easier in that regard. Although I've also seen that it depends a bit. Like, for the paperbacks, I often include a glossary with some Chinese stuff that the usual reader doesn't know. On SH and similar sites, I normally don't because I figured most readers know at least as much as me about it or even more Sometimes, there's still somebody in the comments asking and then I feel like I should have explained it right in the text better but it's really not often. Can't compare with the fantasy ones at all
@yansusustories Wow, thanks for the rundown! That is so helpful because webnovel publishing still confuses me, especially on different sites. I am not bad at tech, but for some reason, it takes me such a long time to get used to a site and start really exploring and using it to its full potential. I always feel so lost whenever I begin on a new platform...
Self-publishing in physical copies is also a venue I have not yet explored. Scary . But thanks for elaborating about that, too! One day, I know I probably will...
And wow about contemporary only beginning with BL! It means all your het romances were historical as well?
@Queenfisher I know that feeling I normally stalk the forums and any explanations they have on-site to get the hang of it or just try stuff out that looks interesting. But I tend to keep on the same sites anyway since I love things that I already got used to
If you do need help with that, always ask away ~ Honestly, writing and publishing are the two things I love talking about the most
I'd say so, yeah. There is maybe one story that is a little bit ... different. Like, I think one of the readers put it as "kinda fantasy but without the magic, kinda steampunk but without the steam and inventions; reminds me of 1920s Europe" or something like that which ... is kinda accurate? Just that it's actually taking place in a completely made-up world with no historical accuracy whatsoever and they kinda did have potions? But that really was the only magical aspect and while it was a bit more modern than the other 'we're pretending to be set in the middle ages'-stories, I wouldn't really call it contemporary or anything. I guess it really might have had an early 20th century feel to it? Truth be told, the whole story is still a giant mystery even to myself
@yansusustories Ah, I wouldn't mind reading such a bizarrely-described story. The setting and worldbuilding sound amazing... Please hit me up whenever you release it in English even if it's going to be from a different account! 20s sound exactly like something I would LOVE to read O_O. I want to write about that time period, so I'm looking for good inspirations all the time! *_*
And thanks for offering help and advice about writing and publishing. I will write you in PMs if I have questions unrelated to what I can glean from commenting on your stories ^^, especially about other sites! You seem so knowledgeable and experienced . I envy!
But so far, I usually learn from you by reading and commenting ^^. When I don't have a deadline that's distracting me, that is! Sorry about those times ...
@Queenfisher Haha, I've started out with some smaller stuff and considering the rate I'm going at ... you might need to wait a few years
Haha, you can do that! And that's the combined knowledge of eight years of my life. I sure hope it makes me sound smart I likely know more about writing and publishing than I know about the stuff I should have learned at university
No need to apologize for anything. Our own deadlines always come first! Can't ignore those
@yansusustories @Queenfisher Um, why do you guys keep writing essays in the comment section. It's fun and all but honestly, it's distracting me from continuing to read. I'm powerless against the essays.
@Blue_Spider_Lily *cough, cough* Sorry! I'm helpless against writing walls of texts when people start asking me stuff But good to know that we're entertaining enough to keep people tuned in despite the length
@yansusustories Hahaha! Sometimes, I take a moment to pause and appreciate the conversations of the past. You'll be shocked to know that you can sometimes learn the spiciest of stuff in the comment section
@Blue_Spider_Lily Let me try and think of the stuff I wrote in the comment section and whether there's anything in there that's not safe for the public to know ...
@yansusustories
@Blue_Spider_Lily
@yansusustories
Let me try and think of the stuff I wrote in the comment section and whether there's anything in there that's not safe for the public to know ...
LOL. Too late )) SH doesn't allow to edit long-past comments ^^.
Though you can delete them, probably...
But...
@Blue_Spider_Lily What kind of spiciest of stuffs?
@Queenfisher You know, I was wondering if maybe we talked about our own s*x life. Then I remembered I don't have one. So I guess at least I'm safe
@yansusustories @Queenfisher Ha! I'm probably sure that once, I saw a couple break up in the comment section, although, it wasn't on SH.
@Blue_Spider_Lily lol That's quite dramatic. Sounds like something one should put on a bucket list or something
