Xie Yi

Main character

  • Male
  • Also called 'Tiankong' in his past life and by Mingtian
  • Reddish eyes with an orange tint
  • Black hair
  • Cultivator (Wanderer)
  • Shi Yue's disciple
  • Childish temperament; holds grudges and repays them several-fold but hates being scolded and is playful
  • Innocent; knows near nothing about the world but wants to learn
  • Singlemindedly in love with Shi Yue; although he doesn't understand it, Xie Yi's feelings towards the other are reaching an obsessive level of devotion. Shi Yue is the core of his life and holds a status akin to a god in Xie Yi's heart

Past Life
Born as an orphan, Xie Yi lived on the street of a small city. He was picked up as an experiment by the five elders of the Demonic Sect, who wanted to cultivate a new puppet-figurehead. He survived their training due to his astounding talent and was placed as the leader of the sect. Meticulously kept away from a large amount of information, Xie Yi had neither an idea about the ways of the world nor about what he was doing. Obediently following his elders' tasks, Xie Yi grew to be the horror of the population; a masterful cultivator who killed and raided for fun.
Once he met Shi Yue, the leader of the Virtuous Sect, Xie Yi unknowingly fell in love and tried to catch his crush's attention. With the elders leading him around, however, he continued his cruel deeds and caused the Virtuous Sect including Shi Yue to hunt him. Once he figured out that he was being cheated by his elders, he killed them. He was still too late to stop his subordinates from torturing Shi Yue to death and committed suicide upon seeing the other die.

Xie Yi's spiritual beast partner is Wu Mingtian, a crossbreed. The beast found him in a ravine where Xie Yi was resting, badly wounded. Wu Mingtian decided to become Xie Yi's partner and the human, not fully aware of what was happening, agreed on a whim

Current life
Reborn, Xie Yi finds work at Feng Yan's smithy and lives there until he participates in an examination for becoming a disciple at the Virtuous Sect. He is acknowledged by Shi Yue and taken along. In the sect, he is roommates with Xu Yan and regards the other as something close to a sibling. He becomes Shi Yue's disciple - much to the annoyance of a large number of other cultivators - and is determined to not mess up his second life. His greatest goal is living alongside Shi Yue, as he has yet to figure out his actual feelings and believes that being able to just accompany the other will be enough. Due to his enmity with the elders of his past life, he intends to kill them one day. Another person on his list to watch out for is Yao Ming.

Shi Yue

Male lead

  • Male
  • Violet eyes
  • Long silver-white hair
  • Cultivator (Grandmaster, Wanderer)
  • Succeeding disciple of the sect  leader (Future sect  leader)
  • Caring; likes peace and tries to help people wherever he can. Puts the lives of his important ones before anyone else
  • Stubborn; in his long life, Shi Yue has learned to stay calm and rational, but he does have matters where he won't budge even against all logic, especially if it involves his important ones
  • Foodie; Shi Yue hates bad food.

Past Life
By the time Shi Yue succeeded his master in becoming the leader of the Virtuous Sect, the stories about the monstrous leader of the Demonic Sect were getting more and more numerous. Shi Yue tried his best to control the disciples of the Demonic Sect and lessen the damages, but due to numerous reasons, his side was at a disadvantage. The cruel leader of the other sect, who enjoyed twisting his words and often left a bloody trail behind him, was his greatest enemy.
In the end, Shi Yue is unable to defend against an attack of the other sect and is dragged off to their territory. After enduring torture, he ends up dying.

Current life
Shi Yue meets Xie Yi during an examination of potential disciples and, out of curiosity, agrees to the possibility of taking the other as his disciple. He soon realizes that Xie Yi is rather special and lacks common sense, which he tries his best to teach. He is very patient towards the boy as he realizes that Xie Yi holds no bad will. His family, not bound by blood, includes his beast partner Xue Hua, a bird-type, and Ying Hua, a young girl. He doesn't accept his biological family, especially not his sister, who he hopes to be dead sooner rather than later.

    Spoiler

Due to an incident, Shi Yue believes that Xie Yi must have come into contact with the Demonic Sect. He intends to watch Xie Yi closely, but isn't too wary, as his Sword Spirit's prophecy states that Xie Yi will never speak a lie towards him. He is also aware that Xie Yi is weirdly devoted to him.

Xu Yan

Xie Yi's friend and roommate

  • Male
  • Brown eyes
  • Short, flaxen hair
  • Cultivator (Gatherer)
  • Xie Yi's roommate
  • Family guy; likes taking care of people and taking the lead
  • Curious and playful; even though he knows a lot of things Xie Yi is doing are no-good, he can't always resist the temptation

Current life
Xu Yan is the oldest child of a common family with several younger siblings. Ever since he was young he has helped out and took care of the other children. He despises his uncle's wife, who keeps on causing trouble for his family, and hopes to become a cultivator in order to support them. He's willing and determined to learn and takes Xie Yi's suggestions for cultivating seriously. He is aware that Xie Yi has a number of secrets and has led a very hard life, but he tries to avoid the topic. Often, Xu Yan has to stop Xie Yi from doing or saying overly weird things and spends a lot of time trying to teach him some common sense.

Xue Hua

Shi Yue's beast partner

  • Male
  • Rainbow coloured eyes
  • Cold blue feathers
  • Blue-ish tinted, very white skin in human form
  • Spiritual beast, bird-type with water/ice focus
  • Pokerface; Xue Hua is bad at smiling in his human form and generally prefers hiding a lot of his true emotions
  • Arrogant on the surface; proud and strong, Xue Hua holds his nose up high even if, deep down, he's a very kind and gentle person
  • Easy to tease; he rarely gets flustered during fights or other tense moments, but he's amazingly easy to tease about his feelings towards others and turns very awkward

Current life
Xue Hua has been Shi Yue's beast partner for quite some time. He likes Shi Yue a lot and, although slightly suspicious of Xie Yi, accepts him. Ying Hua is a bratty little sister in his eyes. Xue Hua spends most of his time in his beast form despite being able to shift into a human form.
He has a bellflower hairpin that he treasures immensely but refuses to talk about it even to Shi Yue.

Ying Hua

Shi Yue's daughter

  • Female
  • Washed-out brown eyes
  • Curly, reddish-brown hair
  • Little princess; Ying Hua is quite condescending towards others and is very spoiled
  • Calm; even Shi Yue has never seen her truly flustered about something

Current life
Ying Hua was picked up by the sect leader and then given to Shi Yue as a young child. He is raising her as his adopted daughter. Since she dislikes people on a general level, she mostly stays as Shi Yue's place or walks around in areas without too many people. Sometimes she sticks with Xue Hua just to bicker with him for a while. She acts arrogant most of the time and doesn't hesitate to use her strength, but she treasures her family a lot. Ying Hua loves floral motives and often insists that Shi Yue buys her hairpins with hanging blossoms or embroidered clothes. She isn't a cultivator, so she doesn't need to wear the sect's robes.

    Spoiler

Ying Hua is actually Shi Yue's Sword Spirit with the ability of prophesizing. These prophecies are not controllable, in neither amount nor matter. She had prophecied that Xie Yi will never lie to Shi Yue, and generally feels quite comfortable around Xie Yi. Because of her nature of not being human, she isn't very interested in mingling with them.

  • Full name: Wu Mingtian
  • Male
  • Turquoise eyes
  • Gray and black fur

  • Moody; switches his behaviour very fast, especially when dealing with people he doesn't care about and can turn from playful to furious in a moment
  • Proud; doesn't back down even against much stronger foes
  • Savage; has a very bloody fighting style and often can't control himself when he gets mad
  • Honest; rarely hides his emotions and is very obvious in how he treats his family, friends and enemies

Past life
Wu Mingtian met Xie Yi in a ravine, where the cultivator was lying, hurt. Since he had no actual goal in life he decided to follow Xie Yi, whom he somehow felt comfortable with.

Miscellaneous
Cultivators

Cultivators are humans who are able to use the core in their body to take in the energy particles in the air and use it as their own.

Cultivation is separated into several levels. Each level has an early, a mid, and a late-stage that can be roughly determined.
The first ten levels are unnamed, followed by the 'master' level, the  'grandmaster' level, the 'transcendent' level and the almost mythological 'immortal' level. Each level has something aking to a cap that needs to be broken through; some levels are harder than others to reach. With higher levels, cultivators gain a longer life. This stops the process of 'ageing' rather than 'growing', so young cultivators will still grow until their mid-twenties. From then on, the additional lifespan stops the process of ageing.
Once a cultivator has reached the level of a master, their eyes turn golden.

Under cultivators, several groups have been established. These can be considered similar to a job, but a cultivator can always change their path or tread several, or none at all, at once.

  • Medics are those that focus on the arts of healing and poisoning and are well-versed with which materials can be used to create potions or ointments.
  • Gatherers are those that go outside to gather materials, often also involving hunting down beasts or travelling far to reach places with rare herbs.
  • Forgers focus on the art of creating and enhancing weapons. In a sect, they mainly create spiritual weapons that have a sort of low sentience and have enhanced abilities. While they are less focused on it, they also create armor.
  • Combatants are masters of fighting and keep the order in the world. When dangerous missions are on the plan, they usually take care of them.
  • Tamers are interested in beasts. They raise the common beasts as livestock or working animals, and breed spiritual beasts. They also help in the process of taming wilder and less intelligent spiritual beasts without partner pacts.
  • Wanderers are those that try to reach the peak of cultivation. Despite having various skills, their greatest interest is to find a way to become immortal.

Cultivators with common interests often gather together in a sect, where they work towards their goal and/or teach a new generation.

Beasts

Beasts can be put into three categories: Common beasts, demonic beasts and spiritual beasts.

  • Common beasts are genetically mutated animals. Due to their environment, they grew into separate species and can continue to mutate. There are always new types of beasts coming into existence due to crossbreeding or other species coming into contact with (tainted) energy and mutating. They are usually stronger and more resilient and have small cores in their bodies that can be used for medication, poisons and arrays.
  • Demonic beasts can be considered a separate species. They have large cores in their body and create a sort of tainted energy that causes mutations in human bodies. Their bodies are valuable materials, but they are generally aggressive and murderous. They only have loose ties to their fellow beasts and rarely work together with humans. If anything, they get along with the Demonic Sect, who shares their behaviour. Demonic Beasts are singleminded and stubborn.
  • Spiritual beasts are a separate species just like the demonic ones. Likewise, they have larger cores with energy quite similar to that of cultivators. They have calmer temperaments and enjoy living in groups. While they, too, are often hunted for materials or due to causing trouble with humans, most cultivators see them as possible partners. Spiritual beasts aren't averse to killing at all, so trying to get along with one isn't a harmless attempt.
Sword Spirits

Sword spirits are beings that come into creation under certain circumstances. They dwell in weapons - not necessarily but usually swords - of cultivators and aid them in fighting.
Not much is known about how they come into existence, but Sword Spirits are considered similar to a family member or even part of the cultivator. They have individual temperaments, appearances and talents. Some grow alongside their cultivator, some don't. Not every cultivator manages to acquire a Sword Spirit even after dozens of years, others only need a short time. Some believe that forging a sword yourself is more likely to create a Spirit rather than waiting for it to appear in a sword you own.
Their talents are very different from each other but are, in the large majority, connected to elemental abilities.
Sword Spirits are very mysterious beings without an actual form that will die when the weapon they are dwelling in is destroyed or their creator dies.

Soul crystals are rare crystals that can aid a cultivator in raising a Sword Spirit. When forged into a sword, the crystal uses the energy of the cultivator it absorbed over time to change the material. Since this is very similar to how a weapon changes its appearance once it has a Spirit, people believe that the soul crystal can raise the chance.

    Pros:

    1. It's not the typical cultivation novel. While the story sticks to all the main points of a the genera (swordsmanship, pill making, forging, virtuous and demonic sects, wandering cultivators, and the cultivating itself) it doesn't focus on the points that most cultivation novels would, giving a refreshing take on the subject. For example, when the main character attends an auction, instead of focusing the outrageous amounts of money being spent or having one character antagonize another in a bidding war (as is normal int the stories I've read), the focus is on conversation between the characters. This was refreshing both because it went against the standard and because it gave the characters something to do while the talked and also progressed the story.

    2. The story has depth. A lot of it you don't get into in the main story itself, only finding out the details in the Author's comments at the bottom of each chapter, but if you pay attention you can see how these details influence the plot and characters. This also means that there are some events that aren't fully explained in the story itself, but the background information lets the reader fill in, or at least speculate over, most of the details.

    3. Most of the characters have depth. Their backgrounds follow them throughout the story and influence their behavior in ways that aren't necessarily convenient for the plot and any changes that occur happen slowly over time. There are one or two characters that have been in the story for a while who I'd like to know more about, but for the most part the characters are fully fleshed out and you learn more about them as you go along.

    4. The story is actually funny. Living up to the title, many of the comedic moments involved a discrepancy between what the main character, Xie Yi's, distorted sense of normal and what the rest of the world views as normal, but it's not repetitive and isn't overused.

    5. No unnecessary characters. Sometimes in stories you end up with characters that are just... around, and they don't really do much. While this story does occasionally introduce characters that are only there for the chapter, the ones that stick around are active in the stories progression, even if only to clean up the little details happening in the background.

    6. The author interacts with the readers. This may or may not affect you depending on your preferences, but Owl does respond to a fair number of comments, so if you decide to post a question or theory, there's a fair chance of getting a reply.

    Cons.

    1. Sometimes the comedy does fall flat. There are a few times when characters are passing banter that don't come off as humorous as I think it was meant to be. As a result, instead of being a joke to lighten the mood, it's just a thing that happened and you're wondering why.

    2. Occasionally writing problems. Occasionally Owl (the author) falls into a pattern of simply telling the read "This happened then that happened" but it doesn't last long, and is probably just a result of following a publishing schedule. The story also doesn't seem to get edited before being published, leading to the rare double typed word or a sentence that's structure was changed halfway through and never fixed, but it's not often enough to be a huge distraction and, again, probably due to publishing so often.

    3. The Gore isn't that gory. The story does contain its fair share of violence, but the impact of it varies, mostly because these seem to be the times when Owl deviates from the "show don't tell" method of writing. For example (Spoilers) it didn't have much impact when a character was literally being torn limb from limb, mostly because the character whose perspective we were seeing it through was more concerned about Xie Yi's mental state than the man being ripped apart. However, when another character found his lover in a medically induced sleep meant to save him from the pain of a shattered body, the focus was on that character's reaction to the situation and the scene had more of an impact (End spoilers).

    4. Occasional discrepancies. This, I'm only beginning to notice recently and all serially published pieces are bound to have a few.  Thus far the discrepancies have been inconsequential (really minor spoiler), such as Xie Yi being adverse to the idea of dressing up as a girl in one scenario, but completely okay with it in another situation that didn't differ enough from the first to explain the change in opinion. There are also a few things that are mentioned and not fully resolved, such as She Yue's issues with his never-appearing sister, but then again it doesn't seem to have much effect on the story and the character didn't linger on the emotions involved.

    Overall:

The story has more good points than bad points and is defiantly an enjoyable read. Thus far its 167 chapters long and doesn't seem to be near the end, so I'm looking forward to reading it for a good amount of time to come.

Wow, I just discovered this, but it's amazing. I really like how Xie Yi is a blank slate and open towards developing in any direction. Although he committed a lot of crimes in his previous life, he is not evil but rather clueless and kind of amoral. He's definitely not a helpless damsel in distress or a white lotus that needs physical saving; instead, he needs saving of another kind: moral enlightenment. Luckily, we have Shi Yue, who is in exactly the right position to do that. I'm really looking forward to the master-disciple fluff and more of Xie Yi's obliviousness in all things common sense haha.

I adore this story! The sole reason for my account on ScribbleHub is this story. I'll try to keep it spoiler free (as I possibly can)

For me, the thing that kept me waiting and hoping for this story is because of how much realistic it is, or well, as real as possible considering the whole cultivation stuff. Most reborn story is just MC died tragically, got reborn, revenge and tons of face-slapping. Most of the plot just repeat itself. The thing that differentiate this story and the rest is "experience". Here, we can see how Xie Yi's past life as a demonic cultivator integrated in his everyday life as a righteous cultivator. Also, his past life's trauma that doesn't just disappear like his past life was nothing but a dream like any other reborn story.

Now, continuing from that. The characters are amazingly created. My favourite characters would definitely be Xie Yi and surprise-surprise (or not)

    Spoiler

    MingTian

    [collapse]

Both of them have memories of their past life. Xie Yi has no common sense due to what he had been taught as a Demonic Sect Master and his actual personality doesn't differ much from his past life it seems. Just less blood and gore. His habits and dispositions are still the same as in his past life because face it, people doesn't change easily and not even that much.

I have to admit though, I kinda hate the author in some ways. Like, why is their past life so horrible! It pains me and I cried every time there's a scene or even a sentence that gives me an idea or how their past life were! One scene that touched me until right now is

    Spoiler

when MingTian told Xie Yi "Let's not mess up in this life, little brother. Let's be happy."

    [collapse]

Then, there's also the plot. You could say that it's fast-paced but the arc is insanely long (not that that's a bad thing, of course). If you're expecting Xie Yi to grow up by the next chapter then sorry to say but you're not getting any. It's similar to one chapter per day inside the story and so makes it interesting because we can enjoy his interactions with other people. His daily life isn't exactly "daily" either. There's always something interesting going on around him. Well, he doesn't actually have any common sense remember? But it's comedic and just honestly, cute. Here's not much of a spoiler...

    Spoiler

He's just a teenager still in the chapter I'm reading here. Started when he's 9 and then a minor timeskip till he's 10 and still another minor timeskip till he's 11. Finally a kinda major timeskip till he's a teenager (I don't remember his age) happens on chapter 70 or 80 I believe.

    [collapse]

So, yeah. Expect a really interesting and detailed life story of Xie Yi. It's a mix of fluff, cuteness, trauma, heart-wrenching story. You're gonna feel lots of emotions reading this.

This story is so complex. OwO I love how immersive it is! You're simply drawn into their world. The romance is slow burn. But you don't even feel it. At least I don't, because watching baby YiYi grow up from a psycho murder baby to getting accustomed to having a family is such a pleasure. Give me a chorus of D'awwww!

The author has emphasized several times that the cultivation is only loosely inspired by Chinese cultivation and it's very true. Don't read this with expectations of heavenly treasures, grinding to get to power or other regular cultivation cliches. They don't exist in this novel. There are spiritual pets and even that concept is completely different from the usual way they are depicted. The spiritual beasts are their partners in this novel and they have equal rights and very protective tendencies and everything is so warm and fluffy~

The story so far is mainly the journey of developing the psyche of MC into a barely normal one so that he can bear a decent level of social interaction without going berserk and killing people left and right because they were noisy. Lol. It's so interesting that there's no deception. He honestly can't hide his vicious personality and instead of condemning him for it, his family, friends and master help him deal with those tendencies so that he could lead a normal life. I really appreciate the amount of thought and care the author has put in to vividly display a completely unique world with intricate characters. Even the side characters are not NPCs that appear for a few chapters for the MC to level up and then disappear. No, they are very important and some are so adorable, they make me want to throw the MC away (MingMing, momma loves you too <3). Now, the ML. I have some words to say about him. He's so kiss perfect. Oh my Gawd. He's a perfect gentleman. Really! So righteous, it has me swooning. And it shows. Not through paragraphs after paragraphs lauding his character with descriptions but through his actions. There's this scene in a bar where it particularly hit me.

    Spoiler

He is not prejudiced. Even though he just saw a man being brutally slaughtered, he took in the whole situation. He noticed that MC hasn't harmed innocent people and tries to shield him from hurting himself. There are so many people consumed by their own definition of what's right and wrong and are so rigid and prejudiced. But Shi Yue is not like that. He knows even righteous cultivators are hypocritical and there may be demonic cultivators who don't indiscriminately harm innocents. He makes his judgements based on what he sees.

    [collapse]
Ah, he's so awesome! And I don't mean he's perfect because he has no flaws. He does have flaws. He is selfish sometimes. Shields the people he protects too much sometimes. Has an inordinate amount of importance placed on the taste on food someti... no, always. Hahaha. He feels very real to me and that's a credit to the author because they shaped his character so well. Thank you for introducing this wonderful new world to me.

I will change this review after the novel is completed. But so far, I'm very satisfied.

So far, this story is promising. Themes of morality can be found: Are we inherently good or bad? To what extent are people influenced by their environment? I look forward to seeing how the author will continue this thought process.

I always get nervous whenever there is a somewhat anti-hero or morally unconventional protagonist. Hopefully, Xie Yi's efforts are not futile.

I feel hooked when reading this story, slow romance my fave

Although sometimes I'm feel frustrated to see Xie yi and Shi Yue, "OMG, I WANT TO SEE BOTH OF YOU KISSING ALREADY" can see myself in the future when see  they finally together, and my reaction like "FINALLY :") "

The extra chapters make me more impatient ?I can't wait to see both of them together.

This story is great and I can see the development, and I'm feel like want to protect XY from evil people :')

The mostly that make me more hooked is the plot, characters, and their developments (oh XY and SY chemistry too)

This story was amazing, and I mean it when I say it!

As a fellow writer of BL, I will admit outright that I find it extremely hard to read gay novels written by people on these kinds of sharing sites. Mostly because I am extremely critical of my own writing and end up comparing my work to the work of others, and noticing how much better theirs seem to be.

But when I was on Chrysanthemum Garden just browsing, and I saw this title come up, the synopsis caught my attention enough that I figured I might as well try it. After reading through the comments and seeing how the story originated here, I made my way over as well.

And, oh boy, I don't regret it at all!

The story drew me in from the first few chapters, and throughout the whole thing I think the pacing was just right and there weren't walls of informative text and boring events that had no real place in the plot. There were rollercoasters of varying emotions, making me laugh and sniffle at all the appropriate parts.

    Spoiler

I think what really kept me reading though was the psychological aspect, and how it was incorporated into the story. There are not many xianxia and cultivation novels that really explore mental illness and trauma in the depth that Owl did, which served to make the story not only more realistic but more heart-wrenching as well. It made the MC lifelike and provided purpose to his actions and thought processes that a lot of authors tend to just brush over as a minor background point.

Also, let me just say that I love a good badass MC! I loved both the MC and the ML, not just because of their personalities but because of their relationship. No unnecessary relationship abuse, misunderstandings were cleared up within a decent amount of time and didn't drag on for several arcs, and most of all they were HONEST with each other! Even if the MC is a bit of a yandere, it wasn't so intense that it was unbearable.

The concept of demonic cultivation and it's effects were explored incredibly well in my opinion. I've read so many cultivation novels where the demonic cultivators are seen as 'evil' and all have the same arrogant, antagonistic world views. This story was really refreshing because it actually gave genuine examples and actions that made the distinction between the good and the evil way of doing things.

And while the story did have its spelling/grammatical errors, some semi-bland moments and did leave us with some loose strings at the end, I think it finished nicely. I didn't really understand how the  'multiple timelines' worked into the plot, but that may just be me. It did seem a little rushed at the end, and we never got the Qiang Ren and Su Liang mini sequel that I was craving (I think?), but it was a good story overall.

If anything, I would like to thank the author for a nice underlying message about a lot of different aspects of mental health, including overcoming past trauma, maintaining healthy relationships and resolving conflicts.

I mean, it's quite a decent read even without that, yeah, but that's what makes it stand out among other books of the genre.

I will probably re-read it a couple of times eventually.
