IMPORTANT NOTE OF THE AUTHOR: apart from some illustrations, I do not hold any rights to the illustrations in this glossary and serve only as an example for those who cannot see the monster from the description alone. Have a good read.

Ever since I became aware of the world around me, I’ve wondered why so little was known about the monsters that inhabit this world with us. Everyone knows how to kill them or their physical characteristics, but no one has properly studied them in their natural habitat.

For this reason, I, John Phoenix Warden, began to undertake this study, to understand the monsters as much as possible. For this reason, I decided to start writing this work, the Codex Monsters.

Starting from this assumption, everything I transcribe in this book, are my observations and therefore the result of personal speculations. So make it clear that everything I transcribe may not be true.

To help those who will read this book, I decided to implement a system of the danger of the monster already used by the guild of adventurers with an explanation of the danger:
  • F: They are very weak and usually smaller monsters. This rank is, without doubt, the largest and easiest group to deal with, but despite this, it is advisable to exercise caution when dealing with them when gathered in packs as they may pose a threat higher than their rank of designation (generally rank E);
  • E: Monsters belonging to this rank can still be considered weak, but they are especially dangerous if faced in packs or if some of them develop special abilities. Dealing with them individually does not pose any particular danger, but a certain caution is recommended;


  • D: Monsters of this rank group can already be considered intelligent monsters and capable of creating societies or tribes. Although they may seem weak, if you face them without proper preparation, they can prove extremely lethal;

  • C: In this category, you can find monsters that can give headaches to even the most experienced lone adventurers or teams of the regular army. Dealing with them is a constant danger, but they are still manageable;

  • B: Monsters that can destroy villages. Although they do not pose a problem for groups of experienced adventurers, or platoons of regular army soldiers, they are already individually a threat but are even more so in groups because they excel in cooperation with members of their own race, to the point of being telepathic. Divided into three groups some of the monsters in this category can still be considered stronger or weaker than others;
  • A: Monsters able to devastate and destroy more or less populous cities. Even if their members are associated or otherwise solitary monsters, their strength is something you can not and above all, you should not joke about. This rank is also divided into three ranks as some of the monsters in this category can still be considered stronger or weaker than others, but they are still able to give a great deal of trouble even to the Royal Guard or teams of Templars;

  • S: Living natural disaster. Already this says it all. Unless you are accompanied by a group of heroes or an entire army, flee for your life.

Another important note is that the status listed below are processed averages and obtained using magic identification tools. While unreliable, I created this possible monster status based on data collected from multiple individuals. Also, all abilities that have an asterisk next to the name mean that not all members of that race have that ability, but there is a strong possibility.

Chiminimera


Rank: F

Chiminimers are small monsters up to 40cm long (from head to tail). The body and the head are those of small rodents, but in addition to the main head has two more on the sides, these have the structure of a Praying Mantis and a Snake. The tail is that of a scorpion and has dragonfly wings on its back. They are extremely curious and quiet monsters, who tend to approach things unknown to them or shiny. They are rarely hunted by humans and since they feed on pests and weeds, they are very well received by farmers, as they reduce damage to crops.

But they should not be considered defenseless their tail can inject a neurotoxin that leads to the paralysis of the affected area, also the snakehead can emit a small poisonous murmur that expands into a frontal cone of a maximum 3m. This toxin is cytotoxic and although it cannot kill an adult person on its own it is extremely painful, also their bite hurts.

They usually attack only when provoked and tend to prefer escape to direct conflict.

They live in small families composed of parents and puppies, which leave the group after 6 months from birth. They live an average of 15 years and the couples stay together for life.

Horned Rabbit

They appear as rabbits about 30cm tall at the withers, with a horn of 20cm on the forehead and their fur is gray-brown. Generally, they are shy and tend to prefer flight to combat, but if forced they defend themselves strenuously. They are mainly vegetarians, but they do not disdain eating some small insect or worm if it happens. They live in forests and plains. These monsters are famous because they are easy to find and hunt. In addition to the fact that they are edible if in packs they can prove to be a threat classified as rank E.

Lizardman


Rank: D

Lizardmen are monsters that have the appearance of large humanoid lizards, having an upright posture. Their species usually live in warm-humid climates and, although rarely, they can build small settlements that recall more of the camps than real villages. They are generally taller than Humans, reaching a maximum height of 2m. The tail itself exceeds 2m and can be used as a whip. The males are usually more robust than the females and have brighter colourations, but excluding this there are no big differences.

They can join the Packs of Stritlian, becoming their labor and exploration force in exchange for protection and food, so I suspect the Stritlians themselves are simply evolved Lizardmen.

They do not have too high intelligence, but they can skillfully use objects and create rudimentary weapons, such as axes, spears, knives, bows and the like. When guided by a Stritlian, they should be considered as Rank C monsters.

Agnis


Rank: C

The Agnis are massive Rank C monsters that have the appearance of Crocodiles or Humanoid Alligators, having an upright posture. They usually live in humid environments, such as swamps, rivers, rainforests and the like, but sometimes they can also be found near the seas.

They are the direct evolution of the Lizardmen and possess the same characteristics at the social level, forming more solid and cohesive groups and villages. They are really impressive, with the largest reaching 2.5m in height and a length of 4m from head to tail, with a weight ranging between 300 and 400kg. The males are generally more massive and imposing than the females, and the latter are also recognized for having the thoracic area similar to that of human women, but if seen from the back it is impossible (for me) to distinguish them... Hell, I called a tribal girl the other day thinking it was her brother... Good thing they consider themselves twins (and they also resemble each other, so... embarrassing figure avoided).

As their appearance suggests they are a race centered on Endurance and Strength, resulting to be valuable Tanks. They are also quite adept at swimming and can hold their breath for almost 1 hour. I’m impressed.

Owlion


Rank: A+

They are relatives of the Griffins, but instead of possessing the traits of the Eagles united with those of the lions, they possess the face and wings of Owls, Tawny Owls, or Barn Owls. They are enormous, reaching a minimum of 3m at the withers in adult age and touching the 6m in length from the head to the tail. Their wings measure about 10m from tip to tip and allow them a silent and powerful flight, but not very fast. The males have a slightly more variegated coloration than the females and the part of the neck is thicker. They are very intelligent and, although they cannot speak, they can communicate with other races without problems. They are called "The Celestial Sages" by intelligent monsters (able to speak). They are classified as Monsters of Rank A+, they are territorial and very fierce; the only exception noted is towards the demons: they demonstrate distrust. Never traveling in packs apart during the mating season, some human trainers have attempted the feat and have always become their lunch. There was also an event where a couple of Owlions assaulted a city. According to reports, the Chief of that city had captured the cub of a couple, which had become so angry that they razed that city to the ground until it left even the rubble.



They have a particular ritual, in which they make the puppies fight each other, then breed, only the winner, leaving the other to look after himself. I don’t know what happens to the abandoned baby as it can also survive however, although young, underestimating it is still an invitation to suicide as it can still be considered a monster of rank C.

They present as enormous serpents having, however, a humanoid bust equipped with arms. In this species, the difference between males and females is incredible, so much so that there are people who assume that they are two different and unisexual species, which have begun to coexist with each other.

The males have a variable coloration from dark brown to black and tend to have traits more similar to the constrictor snakes. Their musculature is extremely developed, so much so that they can crumble rocks with their bare hands. They also have robust bone spines in the cervical and thoracic parts of the spine. On average they measure about 6m from the head to the tail.

Conversely, the females tend to have a dark green coloration or however tending to a cold coloration, and their physical structure is more slender than the males. The head has a structure that resembles that of the cobra, complete with a lateral collar. The most evident characteristic, however, is the two big tusks present on the sides of the mouth. From the head to the tail they measure on average 4,5m.

They are a race called monstrous, but it maintains a good level of civilization, creating Matriarchal villages, in which the leadership positions are managed by the Females, who are smarter than the Males, that usually make use of pure and simple brute force, reducing their strategies to "Charge!". It is not uncommon that in the Stritilian settlements there are also Lizardmen, to the point of pushing me to think that the Lizardmen are just an inferior form of evolution of the Stritilian.

As said before, females have an intellect superior to the males, so much so that they can elaborate real attack strategies. They can also use Poison Magic and can understand and speak human language.

Stritilian almost always moves in Group, resulting in a Variable Degree Threat, but always falling into category "B". However, attacking a Stritilian settlement is considered suicide, increasing the level of danger to A+.

Lamia

Lamia

Rank: A-

It is a Breed generated, presumably from the only Nominative evolution (through the assignment of a name and power) of a Stritlian Female.

Their appearance changes dramatically. The lower part of the body lengthens, reaching even 7m in length, but the most striking thing is the upper part. If the Stritlians are snakes that possess a Humanoid Bust, then the Jellyfish are Human women whose legs are mutated in the tail of a snake. As mentioned, from the sides up they have a humanoid body, but the skin with a particular color, that is a shade of color like the pre-evolution but more opaque. The other important feature is the hair, which assumes the appearance of snakes and possesses a minimum of self-consciousness, being able to move slightly, taste the air, and attack any enemies they have to reach.

Little is known of this race in that the only written sources that cite them are ancient and fragmented, but from what little I have extracted and observed, I think that they possess a superior tactical mind and great fighting skills and Magic, thus being able to overpower even a male Stritlian in pure direct combat.

In recent times, there are rumors in human realms that the Lamias are Brutal and Bloodthirsty monsters who kidnap and devour the humans they encounter, commanding large groups of Stritlians and Lizardmen. Although in my opinion exaggerated if not even unfounded, because besides me other adventurers had the opportunity to confer with a Lamia. Those few who spoke with her managed to survive without problems, but those who attacked her may be lucky to have received a quick and painless death.

Phasne

Phasnes are the normal Evolution that Female Stritlians achieve when they increase their fighting abilities and magical awareness.

Their appearance changes slightly. The skin gets a color tending to teal or however developing a more blue shade, in the upper part, while the belly remains ocher. The head becomes completely that of a cobra, losing the most monstrous features, such as the lateral tusks, in addition, the eyes become smaller. They usually reach a length of 7m, then lift from the ground of a maximum of 2m, and a weight... Ok... I’m sensing a tremendous sense of threat as I write, so let’s not include this detail...

Anyway... Just like the Lamie, they are also monsters of Grade A-, able to perfectly combine their magic to Melee and Short/Medium Range combat. They seem to be slightly weaker than the aforementioned Lamie, but only from the point of view of Statistics.

Just as before they command the Stritlian settlements unless there is some superior race present. What I have been able to observe, and which is most noticeable, is their rapid ability to learn the most disparate jobs, excelling mainly in craft (tailors, blacksmiths, carpenters, etc.) and medical roles.

Striagross

It's the direct evolution of male Stritlians.

Their appearance differs sharply from the previous form, developing a more massive tail and increasing muscle mass.

The skull also becomes more rectangular, with the jaw becoming more massive. They also develop beard-like berbigles on their chin, which allow them to perceive the electric fields around them. It covers an area of about 10m on the ground but rises to 50m in water.

Relatively large fins are generated on the sides of the head and back. Their length reaches 9m, being able to lift from the ground up to 3m.

The color of their body changes totally, assuming shades of Dark Green or Purple.

I am a Race that focuses solely and exclusively on the Brute Force, so much so that they are said to demolish a fortress simply by casually waving an arm and... Well... I can say it’s a little exaggerated... in the sense that they need to do it consciously to demolish it. They should not be underestimated, however, as they are not as stupid as you might think, they simply don’t like to think big plans.

The strangest thing is that they become Amphibians, being able to breathe underwater. Asking the Striagross I know, they confirmed that all of them get that ability, even those who can barely stay afloat. I wonder why...

Akaviri


Rank: A-

It is a unique evolution of Stritlian Males. They can access this form only if they get a magical affinity, resulting in an extremely rare creature to encounter.

Their basic appearance remains similar to the previous form, but they reach 9m in length and their muscle mass condenses, making them appear physically inferior to Stritlian. Their strength is superior.

Their skin takes on a crimson red color and develops various sharp spines on the body, while the face takes on slightly Draconic traits.

The strangest thing is that their intelligence does not increase so much, continuing to use predominantly the Brute Force, but combining it with the magic that permeates their body.

They are creatures of Grade A-... whose magic springs from their Muscles... I would say that I can retire my Common Sense...

Empusa


Rank: A+

They're a direct evolution of the Lamie. Their appearance remains very similar to the previous shape, but they develop an extremely high and wide chest, to which is attached a second pair of arms, perfectly articulated and usable. On their face, more showy scales are generated and their hair gets a minimum of self-consciousness, being able to control the environment around them and warn the Empusa of any attacks; but apart from the tongue to "taste" smells, other senses are less developed.

They measure an average of 8,5 m in length and at the end of the tail develop a kind of rattle reminiscent of that of the Crotale.

They used to be called the Mothers of Snakes, but honestly, I don’t know if they’re still defined that way.

They are monsters of High Rank, so much so that they can stand up to an Adult Owlion in pure combat, but since they usually command real armies of other reptilian races they can prove to be much more dangerous.

Echidna

"The Great Mother of Monsters" is the name by which this race was known in the past.

This particular race of humanoid monsters is the final evolution of the female Stritlians and the later evolution of the Empusa. Their basic appearance remains relatively. The serpentine part becomes much longer and more massive, reaching 12m in length with a maximum circumference of over 3.5m. The strength of this tail is so great that it can crush a knight completely armored as if it were a breadstick, it almost looks like an industrial compactor when she is serious.

The bust remains humanoid and always keeps the 4 arms it had before, but takes on color from the cold shades. On the forehead is also generated a kind of crown formed by 3 tentacles, connected by two flaps of skin, at the base of which there are gems similar to eyes, so much so that once it was believed that they had 5 eyes; the central gem is bigger than the others. The hair seems to become that of a normal woman, but in reality, it can become snakes of similar size to those of Boa, voluntarily or involuntarily.

The human bust has an average height of 180cm and considering the whole body can rise to 4.6m in height.

These characteristics are so particular that if they told me that it is an evolution of some siren... Well... I would believe it without problems.

This however comes from the same title with which they were known in the past... Their children are unique. It is said that the first child is always a Lamia or an Empusa, depending on how strong the father is, but from the second onwards... They could be born belonging to any race, but always with some Reptilian traits of the mother, such as Scales, Eyes with vertical pupils, Tongues Forked, or Snakes for hair.

However, they remain monsters from Legend, classified as Rank S-. It was once said that they attacked any male creature they encountered so that they could reproduce as quickly as possible, continuing to mate until the death of the male himself.

According to Athena and Saliphe, this legend is false. In their stories, the Echidna was faithful lovers who only mated with those they recognized as their partners... Although they still have a strong sexual drive.

They can transform their body, taking on a Human or Elf appearance, while keeping the pupil vertical and small scales on the shoulders. However, they remain larger than normal people, reaching a height of 230cm.
