Synopsis

Yaihan was his village’s most talented cultivator. A decade ago he was sent to continue his meditation on a secluded island off the coast of Xiwao.
His cultivation is cut short when he receives a message saying that his home country is on the verge of being conquered.

Upon returning, Yaihan finds the land barren, villages destroyed, and the country overrun by the Oni-Zhen; an army of monstrous demon and human hybrids that are over twice the size and strength of the average soldier.

Despite their formidability, the average Oni-Zhen is no match for Yaihan’s power. Even though his training ended early, he still has a slew of powers and abilities at his disposable through channeling his chi through the earth.

Along the way, he’ll have the help of a trio of Purifiers; women who can turn into powerful magical warriors with the use of special amulets and access to a wide range of elemental spells.

Together, they’ll take back their country, one demon stronghold at a time.

I’m treating this story as a Writathon project. I’m shooting for daily, consistent uploads. Cover art is done by “Mr. E.” Character art is done by “whoareuu.”

This story will also be on Royal Road under the name "S.N. Keristead."

Status: chapter 13: the only option is...

This may be a war story, but it's the character interplay, both in and out of battle, that really shines. I enjoy seeing this smart, stoic cultivator come back to a village that has all but forgotten him, making friends and rivals, and essentially joining forces with a team of feudal magical girls.

The fights with the Oni hordes give it a big, bloody dash of Fist of the North Star or early JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: puffed-up lackeys, big imposing bosses, Oni arm falling off while he wasn't looking...

The blend of familiar concepts with this original world and its particular powersets (like the fact that their villains are Oni in the first place—not just monsters, not zombies, but a specific flavor of humans-turned-demons that the story makes its own) really makes Oni Buster and its world feel like something special.

Scenes are always moving the story forward, too, and the character banter always feels important and relevant—in other words, even during downtime in the village or war camp, the story keeps momentum.

Overall, I'm excited to see the scope of the world grow as the heroes reclaim the ground they've lost. Also as of ch. 13 Koya is the coolest of the Purifiers, sorry, it's not even close
