The "Demon" of eSports, Nael Walker is a retired professional gamer currently under an indefinite hiatus. He has currently no plans on competing again and simply wishes to experience the very first VRMMORPG, Antoria Online, without the hassle of keeping up with what's new.
Goes by the alias "Gael Runner" in Antoria Online.
A long-standing friend of Nael Walker, Sylvia Oddison used to live with Nael and his sister Stephanie in the same orphanage. When Nael's career entered its peak, he agreed to let Sylvia live in his house for as long as she needed. Born with a unique condition that turned her hair white, it was this very condition that managed to land her a job as a model in Indigo, a well-renowned fashion and entertainment company.
Goes by the alias "Arasine Sonder" in Antoria Online.
Nael Walker's sister. A reclusive hermit who often never talks to people aside from her brother and Sylvia. From a young age, she held an adoration for her brother, who managed to lift them up from poverty and into wealth.
Goes by the alias "Nemone Frierid" in Antoria Online.
Nael's self-proclaimed rival, Reid Griffin is known as the antithesis of the "Demon". His handsome appearance and skill in gaming quickly garnered attention from famous organizations. Taking on the mantle of the "King", Reid participated in various gaming tournaments, winning many of them. That was until he came across Nael. Since then, the two have been locked in a rivalry that doesn't see any signs of ending.
Goes by the alias "Indrus Akshai" in Antoria Online.
An unwilling vampire spawn turned subservient against her will by a Greater Vampire. She holds a deep grudge towards Ssogdasyl, particularly against the law enforcement system that failed her. Often keeps to herself—a habit she has made after more than a decade of fleeing from vampiric hunters. In truth, she is talkative, but only to the people close to her.
An eccentric man who also happens to be Ssogdasyl's Head Researcher on everything related to Inveridium. One of the very first to pioneer the use of the hidden language, he is known to reside in one of his many hidden chambers scattered throughout the capital. His only recorded appearances are through his many Dolls—constructs made to resemble a certain idol.
A mysterious rogue who prefers to stay hidden in the shadows at all times. An amnesiac, it is unknown what has been the cause of his frequent headaches. A voice lingers in his head, instructing him to commit heinous crimes in the name of Vikara.
The Evergreen Protectors' scout, ranger, and leader. Her real name is Valerie Angelo, a tired businesswoman who was chosen to be a playtester for Antoria Online. Particularly skilled with the bow, her most impressive feat is hitting a wyvern three hundred meters in the sky.
The resident dwarf of the Evergreen Protectors. A well-spoken blacksmith who cooks for the party as a hobby. Wields a hammer and a shield in battle, acting as the party's tank.
A half-orc who serves as the vanguard in the party. Possessing both the characteristics of his human and orc ancestry, Drugo wields overwhelming strength and an unbridled rage in battle along with his halberd to deal major damage to his enemies. Ostracized by most for being a "freak", he is actually a kind person.
"There it was. Solov had fulfilled his promise and delivered the canine to his room. Motoph, he called it. The robotic canine. Crafted by Nael the Artificer."
"He didn't think he'd find Sylvia in a place like this. Ssogdasyl was home to hundreds of guilds, but none of them as powerful and influential as the Altair Guild."
"It was the first time she had been forced to draw her strongest weapon. The Holy Sword Novalor, used against a mere artificer. The reputation of the Captain Of Ssogdasyl's Knights would surely be tarnished, no matter the outcome."
"He could see why Reid had chosen these two. Their proficiency in holy magic was leaps beyond his. Regardless, this was his final test."
"The Antorians called him the Crimson Knight. Perhaps Sylvia was right to warn him. The sheer aura his cocky expression was emanating was enough to send shivers down his spine. Still, they were rivals, and Gael wasn't one to run from a fight."
"Was he that forgetful? Memories of the past night were blurry, and the more he tried to recall, Sylvia seemed to inch a tiny bit closer to him."
"Gael was surprised at the power a simple post on the forums could do. Within minutes, tens of thousands of Outworlders had gathered, all ready for a fight. Only a great commander could lead them to victory."
"Hundreds of thousands of Outworlders had gathered. Even Diallos would have found it difficult to retreat from this battle without a scratch. They were sure he wouldn't. His pride as a red dragon simply didn't allow it. They would finally put an end to his existence today."
"In the blink of an eye, Diallos had been frozen. Its wings, once ferocious, had been reduced to ice sculptures, their only purpose now to serve as entertainment."
Broadens the awareness of living beings beyond their ordinary senses, allowing detection of life, awareness of magical energies, and insight through the perspective of another. This discipline leverages living entities as conduits for highly sophisticated practices. For instance, rather than simply peering into the future or past, divination enables practitioners to view events through the eyes of their past or future selves.
Also known as thought magic, dream magic, or somnomancy. Involves implanting thoughts into another being, modifying memories, inducing sleep, calming emotions, and more. Similar to divination, this discipline utilizes living entities as a conduit for highly advanced techniques. These techniques include materializing thoughts and dreamscapes in the tangible realm, and even journeying to metaphysical realms, interfacing with others' dreams in person.
Also referred to as alteration or transmutation. Involves altering physical bodies and enhancing them, relying heavily on understanding biology and mimicking biological attributes. Allows individuals to mimic bioluminescence, sprout additional limbs, produce venom, or even transform into another creature. However, as the transformation is based on one's own body, understanding the rearrangement of organs and bones is crucial for assuming the new form. Upon expending magical energy or losing concentration, reverts to the original form in a flexible manner. Additionally, includes the capability for permanent gender-affirming transformations.
Also known as restoration, often simplistically categorized as "healing magic" but possesses intricacies beyond that. Manipulates the natural processes of life over time, enabling acceleration, deceleration, or halting of various life-related phenomena (complete reversal requiring extremely high proficiency). Capable of halting bleeding, promoting plant growth, expediting disease progression, enhancing recovery, slowing infections, and more. Primarily applied to facilitate the healing of injuries or ailments that a person would naturally recover from.
Control and manipulation of air and the winds. Advanced users can master concepts like localized pressures and vacuums.
Control and manipulation of water in solid, liquid, and gas forms. Can do most things related to water but advanced users can pull moisture from the air as well.
Control and manipulation of fire. Advanced users can separate its components into light and heat, causing various illusory effects and also using the physics of heated objects and spaces to their advantage.
Control and manipulation of earth and the components that reside in it. Metals such as raw ores, stone deposits, and even mud can be shaped according to the user's will.
Involves imbuing inanimate objects with magical energy or souls. Commonly utilized to store magical effects for later activation or to grant objects a semblance of life, enabling them to act as servants or independent entities. This practice serves as the foundation for necromancy, notably the simpler form, given that most deceased bodies have previously hosted a soul and are thus receptive to soul infusion.
Referred to as holy magic or blessings. Bestows good fortune, purifies from curses, and dispels darkness. Typically intertwined with a moral compass, and its potency can be strengthened through virtuous acts and benevolence, while diminished by transgressions and malevolence.
Also identified as evocation or summoning. Focuses on the physical mobilization of souls and magical energy, offering diverse applications. Examples include relocating an ongoing magical effect, drawing weak-minded souls to a specific place, transferring souls and their inhabited bodies across dimensional boundaries, and extracting or inserting a soul from one's body (frequently used in conjunction with animation to transfer souls from one location to another).
Counterpart to benefaction. Primarily inflicts harm by imparting misfortune, reversing blessings, and extinguishing light. Like benefaction's opposite, it gains strength from wrongdoing and sin while being lessened by acts of kindness and good deeds.
Also recognized as warding. Involves deactivating magic and preventing souls from accessing their own bodies, offering a range of peculiar applications, particularly aimed at equalizing the balance between magical and non-magical forces. At exceedingly advanced levels of utilization, can disrupt the laws of physics, rendering phenomena such as nullifying flame heat or suspending gravity in a specific area achievable.
Led by Indrus Akshai as its phantom captain, authority over its members is currently held by the twin sisters Talia and Dalia Vynewood.
Once in a while, diamonds in the rough that have good qualities, hidden from mainstream (trending) exposure pop up in SH. These novels tend to get people back into reading in SH, and are some of the novels you can look forward to seeing once in a while. This has a good chance of being one of them. Though I do admit I found this in novelupdates recommendations under one of its novels, where random novels pop up.
This is a story about a gamer god playing a VRMMO after the ranks of the game have already been set. This takes place in the far future, 23rd century I think? A plot like this is already in the mainstream, rising up to the top, you know the drill.
The thing is that he plays for fun this time, instead of dominance. The liveliness of the game is emphasized in the humanlike npcs so it's like watching slice of life in a second fantasy world from a sci-fi pov.
If you read the tags he does get romance, no harem tag too which is good, and the grammar has no noticeable errors, even if you look for them, they only popped up once IIRC. Gets you hyped up immediately, then slows the pace to SOL. This concludes my review, I'll give it a rating so the story updates more. Nice.
