In a world painted with shadows and enigma, a creature borne of dark desires roams the vast expanse of the Darkwood Forest. Cursed by a power-hungry tyrant centuries ago, he seeks solace in his secluded palace, away from the prying eyes that once beheld him in terror. I really liked this and I'm a sucker for vampires and gothic tales. The setting is well thought out and vivid. I liked the characters and they felt well flushed out and complete.
While I did enjoy the story and found it well crafted I also feel like it suffered in two places. Firstly the language is very flowery and ornate, which definitely makes it hard to digest in some places. Purple prose is the term. I realized that is the style of writing the author was going with and admittedly is not really my thing but I feel as though wording could be simpler at times.
Secondly, the point of view is somewhat inconsistent, we begin by following one character only to randomly jump to another, and this head-hopping happens several times. I feel as though simply leaving the owner of the castle as more of a mystery and letting the reader discover this world themselves would have been better or if the author really wants several POVs to have the breaks clear and not during a scene.
Still, despite these things it was an enjoyable read and I found the story began to flow better a few chapters in. It very much reminded me of Castlevania so if you like that sort of story you'll probably like this one. I would recommend it to those who want something spooky for Halloween.
