I shuddered, my stomach churning. I didn't belong here. I was no criminal. But one night of silliness with the wrong crowd, one ill-advised heist, and now I was paying the price. 25 to life, the judge had said with a scowl. 25 to life in this godforsaken pit of scum and villainy.

As the vehicle trundled down the rutted road, I wondered what awaited me inside those foreboding walls. Would I become another statistic, broken and brutalized, claiming the ass of a cellmate to survive? Or could I rise above, rule over this rabble like a king? The answers were as elusive as a cool breeze in this sweltering hell. All I knew was that my life, as I knew it, was over. Prison would forge me anew in its fire.
