Characters
[Muirgen] Tristan Burke

An easy-going Londoner. Having been talented at art ever since he was small, he pursued his dream of starting his own business several years ago with his wife’s help. He now makes exquisite custom dollhouses for private buyers. Although he’s friendly and easy to get along with, he takes life at such a slow pace that it often frustrates the people around him. He took his wife’s name after marriage.

[Muirgen] Dr. Rhea Burke

A dedicated doctor. She dreamed of being able to heal people since she was a child, and was supported by her strict but well-meaning mother. She likes everything to be kept to a tight schedule but is notorious for being late due to overworking herself. She became friends with Tristan in high school after asking him to teach her how to embroider, but gave up swiftly.

[Muirgen] Muirgen Belleforte

A daughter of Baron Loki and Baroness Arete. Plain, graceless and unsociable, she was hailed as a genius as a child but found to be disappointingly ordinary as she grew. She’s frequently used as a pawn by her family but refuses to pay attention to politics.

[Muirgen] Queen Zecadus Whitewound

Queen of the Dark Elves. The mother who carried her was a Light Elf woman who was captured near the borders and nursed back to health by the previous queen. She left Shadowfell forever after choosing to have Zecadus.

Zecadus is believed to be a holy child born to bring glory back to Shadowfell. She’s been a serious and hard worker from the moment she could walk. She took power several years ago after her mother died of a battle wound.

As queen, she soundly thrashed the Light Elves despite being disadvantaged and was able to use both her battle prowess and her Light Elf blood to arrange an uneasy truce. Since then, she’s invested a great deal in rebuilding Shadowfell, improving their understanding of medicine, and reaching out to the newly technologically advanced land of Golsennur for an alliance. Everything she does is for the sake of her people.

[Muirgen] Baron Loki Belleforte

Originally a mere minor noble of Golsennur, Loki is a viciously ambitious man who always dreamed of more power. He pretends to himself and others that he’s a practical family man, but he only loves his sons because he sees them as extensions of himself. He built his excellent reputation by exploiting his daughter, Muirgen.

[Muirgen] Baroness Arete Belleforte

Muirgen’s mother. She was known to be a beautiful and always fashionable socialite, and was keen for her husband to climb the social ladder for the sake of them both. Unfortunately, her own meagre heritage was of little help to him. Their marriage was a harmonious partnership, political in nature but relatively happy. They frequently sought love elsewhere. Arete gave birth to numerous daughters, but only one son.

[Muirgen] Baroness Medea Belleforte

Loki’s second wife. She has a higher station than his first and is a match for Loki in cruelty and ambition. Rather than passively assisting from the sidelines, she creates schemes of her own to aid him. Medea detests all of Arete’s children. She has three sons with Loki and is keen for one of them to take Alvis’ position as heir.

[Muirgen] Alvis Belleforte

Arete’s eldest child and only son. Because he was Loki’s only male heir for many years, he was the only one to receive heartfelt encouragement from him and grew to be spoiled and arrogant. After his father married Medea, she frequently tried to tear down his confidence and make him embarrass himself in front of his father in order to promote her own sons. Because of this and his father’s own misogyny, he despises women. He feels no remorse over his part in exploiting Muirgen.

[To Be a Princess] Princess Vervain Gladiolus

The current Fleur princess (there is only ever one). She’s known for her beautiful pink hair and the literal shimmering stars in her violet eyes. She naturally smells like lavender. Her beauty is maintained by her servants, as she tends to study so much that she forgets about her health. She suffers from General Anxiety Disorder and frequently takes panic attacks. Her favourite indulgences are a tub of warm honey and warm milk flavoured with rose water.

[To Be a Princess] Ser Lorraine Blake

This generation’s Summoned Hero. She was an orphan lesbian raised in a homophobic foster home. To channel her anger, she took up writing raw and bloody stories about war. She ended up on the streets after she turned eighteen and was unable to find employment, finally being chosen and transported by the goddess on what she considers to be the worst day of her life. She despises fairytales as heteronormative lies.

[To Be a Princess] Queen Aloe Gladiolus

Vervain’s Fleur mother and the previous kidnapped princess. She’s a mature beauty with fuchsia hair and glass-like blue eyes. She appears to be a compassionate and kind woman, but she has a will of steel. After being tortured by the Demon Queen in her youth, she strongly believes that it’s the responsibility of the royal family to keep Fleuvert happy to protect the Fleurs. She loves her wife deeply but feels unable to speak openly to her about her troubles.

[To Be a Princess] Queen Stacy Dwerryhouse

Vervain’s Hero mother. Once a victim of abusive parents who used video games for escapism, she eagerly embraced Fleuvert’s plan for her to secure happiness for herself. She’s mastered the art of pretending to be bold and adventurous but, secretly, she remains an introvert with no self-confidence. She loves Aloe and recognises her unspoken fears, doing her best to help her without a word passing between them.

[To Be a Princess] Fleuvert

The goddess of Corde Femmes who created both the continent and the Fleurs. Although the Fleurs know her as the only goddess, she’s actually part of a large pantheon, where she’s well known for being a vain, spiteful and detestable woman. Many of the gods who habitually disrupt her plans are men, so she’s come to hate them. She made Corde Femmes to satisfy her vain desire to be blindly worshipped and obeyed.

[To Be a Princess] The Stranger

A non-binary person who braved the traps and dangers Fleuvert set to guard Corde Femmes in order to reach the Fleurs. They aimed to discover the secrets she was hiding there, but also brought the Orb of Heresy to put an end to her. Their love for the Fleur princess led to them making a fatal mistake and dying.

I only read half of Muirgen, so take my words with a grain of salt. It sort of suffers from web novelitus, where everything feels like a summary, sure we get told what happens to him, but barely anything for how he feels. It's like a series of plot points, but no thoughts or feelings.

Also, it's not really that the first half is slow - it's actually quite fast - but it's very, um, depressing, and somewhat spiteful of those who abuse others. It just feels like complaining without any reflection or inner monologue to allow the abuse to build character, or, idk, an opinion on it. It's just there.
