I only read half of Muirgen, so take my words with a grain of salt. It sort of suffers from web novelitus, where everything feels like a summary, sure we get told what happens to him, but barely anything for how he feels. It's like a series of plot points, but no thoughts or feelings.
Also, it's not really that the first half is slow - it's actually quite fast - but it's very, um, depressing, and somewhat spiteful of those who abuse others. It just feels like complaining without any reflection or inner monologue to allow the abuse to build character, or, idk, an opinion on it. It's just there.
