This is a very unusual story about a condition that I have never heard of before. For someone who doesn't experience much emotion, the journey that the character goes through evokes quite a few of them. Add in an intriguing metaphysical background and some simply sketched yet likable witches and you have a treat.
The transgender bit does seem a bit tacked on. With all the changes the main character undergoes and her unusual (and very creative) backstory, a gender change seems almost redundant. I know that being trans is the underlying metaphor (and that's why I'm here), but it just kind of pops out of nowhere at the end.
