Callum had seen things all his life. There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy.
It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at thirty Callum has no desire to be part of that secret. Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life. There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to.
To hell with that.
Loved the story and barely have words to describe it. Not without giving spoilers en'mass at least.
What I can say is the structure of the story is great with minimal to none plot holes and most are about how sometimes the MC action go completely against his apparent character and opinions. Which is good because if he didn't the story would be an enormous skip in time until when the MC is finally found but he became devastatingly op and go on a "story ending" massacre and that would be it.
Ergo, MC is a massive coward/anarchy/ apparently cold-fu## but always act the opposite of it while lamenting his choices. Which is both annoying and fun with all the paranoia concept at the base where he would be be an unlikable protagonist but act like a likable one.

Now I really want to write a review for this story but I don't know where to begin.
It's a really good story with mystery, action and drama all blended beautifully. MC is amazing, one my favourite MC to have read recently. Just with how they think, act and everything they try to accomplish. The status changes a few times as the world shifts because the MC reactions and actions, as truths become revealed and the structure of this not morally great world starts to crumble.
The magic system is interesting and well developed. The world, the races, factions all of it are pretty spectacularly intertwined and thoughtout.

as someone who isnt a fan of suspense and drama, this is amazing. I read everything available in one sitting which ended up being the better part of a day. Cant wait for more.

This is probably one of the best original works I have read in a long time.
The magic system isnt borrowed, its quite unique but also is in line with classical fantasy magic systems which makes it easy to understand.
The author doesn't spend a lot of time fleshing out other characters in this story apart from the more important ones but by no means does that mean the characters dont have depth. Each character that is introduced, the more the author uses them the more he gives depth to their character (individual quirks, opinions, outlooks, etc, rather than just "fulfilling their plot obligations).
The main character is exactly as the title described, Paranoid but its really refreshing to see such a main character as opposed to the needlessly ambitious characters in a lot of other stories.
The story is intense, realistic in a way, the characters feel quite human even if they arent lol and overall this is a lovely read.

This is a masterpeice if I ever read one. None of the characters are filler, everything is essential to the story. All the mechanics make sense, and the author sticks with the rules he makes. I can relate to the MC nit being very social myself. The ending is complete, leaving almost no questions unanswered, except for the endless possibilities that exist for spinoffs and sequels. Honestly, I cant imagine any way for this story to be better.
I do still wonder if Callum would ever become a true archmage, make amends with Duval, and who is his father?
I strongly encourage you to read this! Just be warned, once you start reading you will have many sleepless nights of binge reading!

This has got to be one of the best stories on the site. Compared to blue core which was good but all over the place this one is very focused. The MC has a very clearly defined domain of power with very obvious strengths and weaknesses. The story is about playing to a spacial mage's strengths and hedging against weaknesses. Every victory is hard won and very satisfying as a result.

Huh. Came here after Blue Core expecting a good novel with smut. Got no smut, but sure as hell got a good novel.... Callum has easily become one of my all time favorite protagonists. He's incredibly careful, cautious to the point of paranoia (and justifiably so!), creative and just so, so relatable. Beyond him, the world building is just fantastic and the writing is pretty much flawless. 10/5

This is my third or fourth time reading this story. It never gets old. It hit's the science buttons for a nerd like me, has an impressive balance of theory-crafting and personal progress, some next level perspective changes giving us a deep dive into the values and concerns of each faction, as well as an idea of exactly why Callum gets away with what he does in hindsight.
The tension, the suspense, the risk and thrill of discovery. Callum gives us a stunning view of what it is to be both human and a monster. In multiple ways, we see people reacting to the unknown; the kinds of challenges that disarm people of power and means, be they well meaning or corrupt.
This story is one of my guiding stars. A paragon of the Action genre.

I don’t know how to convey how excellent this is; five stars is not enough.
