Synopsis

Volume 1 - Blurb;
The two women couldn't seem much further apart - Teacher and student, specialist and novice, of noble birth and with no family at all - But when brought together with the rest of the Battleship Am-Fluchtig's fledgling crew, perhaps they will have more in common then first thought.

The ships of the Tristian Flotilla are gathering, a dangerous submarine is already on the move, and it will all come to a head at the sight of a mechanical moon.
The UnderCurrent has begun transmitting...

'The UnderCurrent Incident' of 2022 gave humanity it's first glance at alien life, although not in an expected way.
It allowed for a VR-like vision into the lives of an entire race of people separate to our own. This novel serialises their story, the story of 5 ordinary pilots partaking in an interplanetary war of galactic proportions.
With no way of knowing if this glimpse into a foreign society is an alternate reality or some distant planet in our own universe, it would only take so long for the public to demand a guided tour - Now you hold that very thing in your hands, with exclusive access to the project and transcripts from the original experiment's team. You will learn of the lives to which UnderCurrent affords us a view into.
Of the Battleship Fluchtig's soldiers, of a conflict that spans far more then any of them know and of their hunt for a 'Dangerous Submarine'.

-Blurb of "The UnderCurrent Experience" by Pierre Havelock on behalf of his Majesty's government.

Now on Royal Road and coming to Scribblehub!
This is my own original work, with obvious inspirations from the likes of Gundam, Dune, 1984, Evangellion, Grimgar and anime in general.
All ideas and concepts shown are my own, though I do Parody some things.
A fair amount of research has gone into many of the topics in this book, but I am by no means an expert in any.

I'd love to share some of the research I've come across on mecha, living in Space, and amputees. Amputees in particular is a worthy topic we should all be more educated on - You may find this video link a brief intro into that world; https://youtu.be/piiFI8QafHs

There is a degree of deconstructionism towards the mecha genre involved with an onus on taking a more practical look at the features of that mode of storytelling, giving actually worldbuilding explanations for some of the fantastical equipment involved and using the likes of military structure and resource management in conjunction with the story, but hopefully this is something anyone can enjoy with no prior knowledge of the genre traditions.

Thanks for reading!

    GOOD ENSEMBLE IN A MECHA

When you want to read an ensemble cast with good flowing transition from one POV to another, which doesn't bog down the overarching story line.

Undercurrent kind of read like a mecha slice of life to me, where the story is told from the perspectives of the Kolme and his team. With Una being the anchoring protagonist, the others revolve around.

The story begins with the team's rooke Una who is having her ass handed to her during a battle simulation, which introduces her senior Sabban ❤️

So, I'm not gonna lie, Sabban is my best boi, who is the only other male in the group. I like him more for his complexity. He has a deep-down caring big bro nature, but became hardened due to a tragic situation that he had no control over. Unfortunately, Una is experiencing the sadder side of Sabban. I like it how his character unfolds and grows over time.

The other team member that the story is told a lot from is Hoki, who comes across as an ice princess at first glance, but the more the story is told from her perspective, you see a vulnerable person who wants to care. Plus, she's the yuri of the bunch 😉 so big plus there. Although, there are references of same-s*x preferences, it's not touched upon other than being part of the characterization.

Kolme reminds me of one of the old Doctor Whos sometimes, I get a 3rd Doctor vibe for some reason. He's a big daddy giant overall, but like Sabban has his many battle scars that have hardened him somewhat. I kind of get a feeling that Sabban and Kolme have a connection to each other because of similar situations. Although, not sure if they like each other much, but later chapters shows they are slowly coming into a solid friendship. Kind of like pop and son connection.

The final member of the team is the infamous Scarlet, who has enough veteran experience to match Kolme's. She kind of gives me a Sigourney Weaver in Aliens vibe. A badass veteran who has a beef with Hoki.

Putting mecha aside, what really sells here is the character developments and how alive and real they are.

For those who want more character growth from their Gundam style mecha story, this one is definitely worth the visit.
