A goddess long forgotten stirs from the cries of her people, begging her to return. The decayed heart of an empire, beats once more as bells tolled across the land heralding the return of a leader long thought lost.
This is the story of Calixa Asteria, the Empress of a long lost empire. Though, not all is as it seems. Her memories, remain just out of reach locked away by her past self. Deep down, she knows she is not of this world, yet, with out a doubt belongs there. Her future is uncertain, as she grapples with a world that has forgotten who she was, and a people who wait for her to guide them through their darkest hour once more.
Authors notes: This is the rewrite to The Whispers of a Dead Empire story I originally wrote. This is cleaned up, with a setting change and character face lifts. This is now a true kingdom builder.

This is considered a rewrite of the original story but it really has little in common with the original besides the title and some character names. It feels more like the original's sequel.
Still, I'll talk about it as a rewrite. There isn't too much written at this time, yet from what I've read thus far, some alterations are welcome and some are simply different. Overall I'd say this version of the book seems to have a touch more of a dark fantasy tone and the MC feels more mature in character. I'd consider these good things myself.
There is currently no sign of a System anymore and the whole dungeon core angle seems to have been abandoned. Those two aspects were part of the original's foundation and them being gone really changes almost everything. This is now a story with a focus on reclamation of an (un) dead kingdom rather than domain creation & ascension to godhood.
The 'fake' dungeon plot of the original seems to be reality in this. A good change but I'm not really sure about the execution. There's one plot change I really don't like.
The whole soul split between three versions of herself, including one of whom has been living as a goddess of the undead for 5 thousand years already. I've never been a fan of the whole 'otherself' trope that likes to appear in these types of stories. It really makes me wish the story had begun with these three souls fusing or something to go ahead and close out this plot point from the very beginning.

I have quite high expectations since, ngl, the original work really ticked all the boxes I look for In a kingdom building novel, so having to read a refined version of it feels like a privilege.

I loved the original and I'm sure I will love the rewrite.
Though not so much the "all this is fiction I created" trope as some parts felt forced for me.
Still, it's a great story that had me glued to my phone reading it.
