I like it. I do. The setting has potential, with lost magics, kingdoms at war for acceptably believable reasons, an ancient hero cast unjustly from grace, and the descendants picking up his legacy.

... The problem is Elena, who becomes more and more of a Mary Sue with each passing chapter, not because she's OP (which she totally is) or because everyone loves her (which they do), but because the entire universe seems to bend to her favor.

Major spoilers for the first 8 chapters below.

      Spoiler

The issue is that nothing about Elena feels earned. She's beautiful enough that literally all her problems at the start stem from men trying and failing to get into her pants. She's handed the power, knowledge, and memories of an almost-literal god on a silver platter, and masters it all instantly. She can turn lead into gold for infinite money without consequence. She buys a slave and frees her, only for that same slave to pledge her very existence to Elena's service in the next breath, giving her the best of both worlds (a slave and the moral high ground) without any of the boring relationship building stuff. Not to mention how she casually murders two people. In public. Including the local Baron. And no one gives a single damn.

      [collapse]

... the list goes on. As of ch 13, there's no challenge and no consequences. Good things happen to her because she's Elena the Valkyrie. Bad things don't because she's Elena the Valkyrie. Don't get me wrong; I like power fantasies as much as the next guy, but when every event or non-event can be justified using the same 3 words...?

I give this 4 stars as of chapter 18 because I do genuinely like this series, and despite my complaints, I recognize that we're still in the early stages of the story. Elena needs some time to savor her newfound power and throw her weight around after a life of helplessness, but if this continues unchecked, the story will crash like a china cabinet.

Ed a/o c22 New arc starts, and an enemy that can't immediately be Elena'd into submission appears. Steps in the right direction, I think.

I'm writing this while I'm at ch33, so I might change my opinion later on, though I doubt that I will, because it's that good.
