""Mommy!""
Even before I could close the door when I got home, two pairs of feet stomped their way to me.
I squatted down and picked my my adorable daughters as they wrapped their arms around my neck, our cheeks rubbing against each other.
"I'm back. Were you good?"
""Yup!""
Both of them nodded, and while I was pretty tempted to just take their word for it, it wasn't responsible of me to do so. My eyes went to the last person to greet me.
"Welcome back Scarlet!"
The young foxkin trotted up to me, her eyes sparkling.
"How were they?"
Once I adjusted my grip on my girls, I stretched out a hand and patted the other girl. Her tail wagged so furiously I was a little worried that it would fly right off.
"They were good! They played well with the other kids!"
While from my perspective, Flix was also a child, I refrained from letting that distinction out.
"Alright. I presume dinner is ready? How about you go join Philia then?"
The scent of hot food was strong in the air, and I needed to feed Alicia and Fate while everyone else ate their own food.
We headed off to the dining room. As Flix jumped into her seat, I gave Philia a quick wave to confirm that she was fine before the three of us went back to our room.
"Now finish all your blood you two."
Once I sat my daughters down at the little table in our room, I pulled out a jar of blood each.
Orc blood. Nice and rich, but not so strong to turn them off of blood from monster around their level.
"But mom! I want milk!"
"Milk's the best!"
"Now now. You two can drink milk after you've finished your blood. Alright?"
After consulting with Philia, we came to the conclusion that this was likely the best way to wean the two of them off of my milk. I only really understood it as a problem two years ago when I realized that even the youngest of the dhampire babies had completely been weaned off, yet there was no indication of Alicia or Fate of showing any interest in blood at all.
""But~...!""
"No buts. Now, drink your blood, both of you."
Despite my best efforts though, it had been slow, though a lot of it was likely my own fault.
Seeing how they would tear up or complain made me cave in far too often in the beginning. It came to the point that Philia needed to enact interventions on occasion before Alicia and Fate finally accepted that they had to drink blood at least as part of their meals.
Or rather, so I could properly harden my heart for their sake.
When I thought about it, before Philia started to live with us, I almost always caved on every little thing when it came to Alicia and Fate. Sometimes
I was definitely a bad mother. Just not in a way I could recognize at the time.
*Skrrt...skrrt...*
After looking down at their meal, a little dejected, first Alicia, then Fate started to bounce in their seats, shifting it across. As their legs couldn't possibly reach the ground while they sat in their chairs.
I couldn't decide if I wanted to face palm their little act, chuckle, or just watch them fondly as they moved their seats until they were touching with my own.
Once they stopped moving and leaned their small bodies against my own, I levitated their cups over and into their hands. There was a bit of disappointment in their eyes, but they slowly brought their meals to their lips and consumed it without complaint.
My hands softly stroked their heads as their cups continued to rise up into the air, until they suddenly lowered them, letting out simultaneous gasps for air.
""Milk!""
Both of them demanded their dessert while showing me that their cups were empty.
"Yes, yes. Alright. You two did well."
Finishing off one last pat, I withdrew my hands to unbutton my robes.
Alicia and Fate on the other hand excitedly jumped onto my lap, and once I exposed myself, they rested their heads on my chest and immediately latched on.
I felt their arms wrap around me while their breaths calmed down, and I in turn wrapped my own arms around my babies.
*Sigh*
They were too old to be getting fed milk every day, even as a dessert, but feeling their little warmth on my chest brought me bliss. Maybe I was a bit of a pervert because of this. Maybe this was all my fault. But feeling my children directly against my skin brought me happiness that I couldn't deny.
When I thought about the day that we would no longer have quite times like this together, it made me start thinking that maybe it was alright to not completely wean the two.
Then I actually picture them as adults doing this and I manage to reconvince myself that it's a terrible idea.
Even at five years old, this was really starting to push things. Maybe we could get away with it at ten, but past that, not even I could consider it acceptable.
"..."
Speaking of, Alicia and Fate weren't letting go at all. I could feel how much lighter my chest was growing, yet there was no signs of either of them having enough.
(Maybe it's time to switch to bigger cups for meal time?)
I idly considered the issue before going back to enjoying the feeling of their warm breaths against my bare skin.
Alicia and Fate told me about their day then we spent the rest of the night playing together while everyone else slept.
In the morning, they went out again with Flix after breakfast, and I went to get my new weapon.
I was quickly let in to the smithy when I showed myself, and a tired looking titan greeted me.
"Are you sure you're alright?"
"Don't worry about it. I do this all the time."
"You're not getting younger. I think you should think more about your body."
"I'll worry about that when I'm dead."
I was worried that it really would come to that. But as Njordr wasn't the type to listen to this sort of advice in the first place, especially from someone like me, I didn't bother pushing the subject.
"Anyways, you didn't come here for that, but this."
The older titan hefted himself up and walked over where his latest masterpiece stood against the wall, covered in a thick drape cloth. The shape of the drape did a good job concealing the weapon's true form, as I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to look like. It was as if Njordr was carrying a giant triangle.
Though considering that his muscles visibly bulged as he heaved the thing up, it must have been quite heavy.
"Here."
With a strained word, the titan lowered the new weapon. The ground shook slightly from the weight, making me even more curious as to its design.
The drape was unravelled, revealing the weapon's form. I had difficulty holding back a gasp as I looked at it.
The weapon was a pole arm like my last, but the blade was significantly larger with numerous intricate fluting which seemed to be for lightening the weapon as much as possible without sacrificing its strength.
The thing which most caught my eye, though, was the fact that the blade was almost perpendicular to the shaft. Like a pick, but obviously not. The shaft was longer than I was tall by a good head or so, and the blade was half as long. It went from an extremely fine point, curving so that the a swing using most of the shaft's length would cause the blade to arc at the same rate as the perimeter of the swing.
The inside of the curved blade slowly increased in width until about three quarters of the length, where the blade quickly flared out, tripling its width in only a dozen centimetres before continuing the previous rate of expansion. The base of the blade curved inwards, merging seamlessly with the shaft.
In addition, opposite the blade, sprouted a short spike along with a pair of bladed hooks. Each was twice as long as my hand, but when compared to the massive blade, they felt more like a decoration than anything.
"You made me...a scythe?"
Strictly speaking, it wasn't exactly a scythe. The overall profile was one, but when you excluded the first half of the blade, the inner half reminded me of a type of axe from south-east Asia. The Igorot head hunting axe, I think people called it. Though the leading tip was far longer here.
"C'mon. Try it out."
I accepted the proffered weapon. Lifting it up, I could feel its weight in my hands. It was far heavier than my previous bardiche, but not so heavy that I found it cumbersome.
Most likely, I was one of the only people in the entire world that found this weapon to be like that.
But even then, a scythe? Really?
I could understand the theory, as the blade would have massively greater penetrative power against hardened defences and was far less likely to bend as long as the tip didn't deform.
But regardless of my reservations, I did as Njordr asked.
Taking a few steps back to an open area of the smithy, I held the weapon in both hands, then lightly swung it.
There was the feeling of the air parting for the weapon almost like the red sea. It didn't feel like I cut the air, but instead the air made way in an attempt to avoid its sharpness.
Swallowing my saliva, I firmed my grip, and started to swing it again and again, spinning the weapon around me, allowing the weapon to flow like an extension of my body.
There wasn't any particular discomfort. And while you couldn't say there was any real balance, considering that the blade weighed more than the adamantium the shaft, as long as I accommodated for that fact, it felt like this weapon might be usable in a practical sense.
Somehow, it seemed like one of my weapon skills worked on the scythe, even though there wasn't exactly any skills that normally seemed to work for it. Most likely it was my [spear mastery] skill. It was the only skill I had which worked on pole arms.
When I stopped, my eyes were caught on the intricate inlays on the front face of the blade.
Almost immediately I recognized the symbols as those for enchanting.
"This is...a mending enchantment?"
"Aye. I tried everything I could to make you a weapon which can withstand cutting through the hardest things you could face as many times as you want, but no matter what, you'd hit the limit and it'll break. So I asked a bud and got the enchantment added to it. As long as the thing doesn't break, you can quickly fix any dents and bends by channelling your mana."
The circuit was made from orihalcum to offset the fact that adamantium was a poor conductor of mana. There was even a tiny channel that ran along the spine of the shaft so I could easily channel my mana no matter how I was holding the weapon.
"There's also another one on the other side, to make the edge as sharp as we could."
Turning the weapon over, I saw there was a different pattern on this side. And as the old titan said, it was an enchantment to make the edge both sharper and harder. Though this one was a passive that didn't require anything but ambient mana to operate.
"So, what do you think?"
"...I think...you've outdone yourself once again."
While the weapon wasn't exactly something that would normally be that easy to use, thanks to the assistance of my skills and stats, the weapon felt natural in my hands. I could probably mow through those Evocatus monsters with ease as long as I had this.
And it was a good thing as well. My backup plan was to just go through the entire floor relying entirely on [blood magic], being able to split my offence between that and a proper weapon would both make my progress faster and more reliable. And that was in addition to the fact that I wouldn't have to consume nearly as much blood to accomplish it as well, leaving less time wasted refilling my blood stores afterwards.
"But is this really alright?"
"You're the one who ordered it."
"No, I mean, from an image standpoint."
When I thought about it, I was a vampire who habitually wore black robes. That was a scary enough image, but when you added a scythe to it, it felt so edgy that even I'd start bleeding from the thought.
"Not sure what you mean. Sure, a scythe's unusual for a weapon, but it works for what you need, right?"
"Hmm... well, it does."
Maybe the image of the grim reaper didn't exist to this world. It was always hard to differentiate various preconceptions from Earth to the ones here.
"So, how much do I owe you for this?"
"Ah, go and test it out in the dungeon. If you've got no complaints, then I'll send the bill."
"Send it anyways. You deserve to be paid for you work, even if it doesn't quite meet my requirements. I doubt there's any weapon that would get as close in this country anyways."
"Hrmph! I'll only get paid when I satisfy my customer."
"I'm already satisfied. Just accept it."
Without waiting for the titan's response, I put the weapon away in my pocket dimension and strolled out, eager to test this new thing.
I immediately made my way to the first group of monsters on the 136th floor, and the moment I spotted the large armoured figure with its prominent shield, I equipped my new scythe.
As if the monster's heavy stomp being the start signal, the rest of the monsters rushed out of their hiding spots, flanking the greater monster.
Unlike before, I opted to try fighting with mostly just my new weapon for this engagement to test it out.
Kicking off the ground, I spun my pole-arm in my hands to build up momentum, then the moment I was in range, I threw out a full bodied swing. Together with a loud screech of metal scraping and deforming, the first monster crumpled backwards in half as only a thin sliver of the back armour was left to keep the upper and lower halves of the body together.
Yet to my surprise, my scythe had hardly lost any momentum during the swing, causing me to spin my body to avoid compromising my balance.
With my momentum successfully preserved, I went in with another swing, this time from below. Again, my targets armour let out a loud screech as it was impaled and torn apart.
Now that I was watching for it, I easily followed up the swing by spinning the heavy blade back behind me before it emerged from my side, already on the way to cut down another monster.
Swing, swing, swing.
With surprisingly little effort, I had managed to cut down all the monsters on the left flank, my weapon not stopping even once.
Bracing myself, I stopped my weapon and stared at its blade, amazed at the performance. Thanks to the excellent design and construction, there wasn't any traces of the crescent shaped blade being damaged either.
But having made the biggest blunder you could in the middle of battle, I was late to react to the monster thrusting out its spear at me from the shield-wielder's other side.
I narrowly dodged the sharp point by flinging my body to the side, but the act caused me to lose my balance, which my enemies didn't fail to capitalize. Two monsters swung down their own weapons together while a third circled around my flank. The large shield-bearer stomped up to follow up with anything I tried.
Unfortunately for them all, what I tried was beyond what they could respond to.
Tilting my new scythe to the side, I caught the downwards swings with the blade. While the butt of the hilt slammed into the ground from the impact, the weapon as a whole didn't falter despite the combined force of the monsters weight being pressed into it, earning a smile from me.
The flanking monster tried to thrust out its weapon to my vulnerable side, but rather than take it, I simply dropped through the floor by connecting the space under me with another further away.
The moment the monster stepped too far in after over committing its attack, I widened the area the space was bent, and the lingering weight of my enemies attacks caused my weapon to shoot through the portal, landing my weapon safely in my hands.
On the other side though, the two monsters couldn't arrest their attack in time and their weapons finished their paused swings, sundering apart the helpless monster that had over committed its thrust.
Spying an opportunity, I spun around and threw my weapon, my scythe cleaving the two remaining minions before they could get their defences up again.
And not to waste the folded space I hadn't reverted yet, I sent my shadow through it and caught my weapon, pulling it back through and palming it once more.
Now that all the smaller enemies had been taken out, it was a one on one between me and the shield-bearer.
The perfect time to test some of the limits of my new weapon.
I charged in, scythe trailing behind me.
Just as I closed into range, the huge lug swung its short sword. But while it was quick for its size, it was still big and the act had quite the obvious tell. With barely any effort at all, I ducked under the swing and dragged my weapon along while I passed my target.
The blade caught on the monster's leg, but against my hope, I was thrown off of my feet when my weapon came to an abrupt stop, being unable to cut through the armour on a flat push.
The large evocatus wasn't so stupid as to allow me to get away with that mistake scott-free, and promptly dropped his shield on top of me, relying on its weight to crush my body.
Of course I wouldn't just let him do that, and I bent space, sinking my body through the ground and appearing in front of it once again.
This time, as I rushed my enemy, I tried using the scythe more how it was designed, spinning it around between my hands. Rather than wait for the shield-bearer to attack, I threw my weight into my attack as it brought its shield to bear.
There was a mighty scream as adamantium tore and shred, my scythe was buried all the way to the shaft right through my foe's shield. And with a blade as long as it was, not only was the shield broken through, but the armour that lay behind it.
I pulled my weapon back, out of the path it had taken. The monster stood before me unmoving for a few moments before it fell to its knee, then to the ground. I could see a small hole in its back, where my scythe managed to punch through three layers of thick adamantium in a single blow.
But when my eyes landed on my weapon, I could see the consequence of the overly aggressive act.
The tip was curled to the side, and there were chips in the blade from all the abuse it had endured during this fight.
But then again, not only did I learn the limits of my new weapon, but I had the opportunity to test the last of its features.
Channelling my mana into the hilt, the weapon was enveloped with shade, the colour of my own aura. And after only a few moments, was the weapon revealed from under the opaque mana.
All traces of battle damage had disappeared, as if it hadn't been there in the first place.
(Wow.)
I had to admit it. I was quite impressed.
Everything about this weapon was incredible. The mana needed to repair it wasn't insignificant, but not prohibitive in the slightest as well.
The only problem with the weapon would be its weight. It was heavy enough that if I wasn't careful, it could cost me my balance at an inopportune time. And for anyone who didn't have superhuman strength like I did, it would be thoroughly too heavy to wield.
No, even if they did, if it wasn't for the physics defying nature of the system, the weight would simply swing the user around rather than the other way around.
But to say that I was able to get this level of performance without discovering a new material to make my weapon from was outstanding. Njordr deserved quite the pay for this job.
The weight drawback wasn't even that big of a deal, since anyone who was soloing this deep in this dungeon would either not be relying on a melee weapon or not be so worried about their weapon's ability to repeatedly punch through heavy armour.
I got that I was just brute forcing a lot of things, but it was far faster and safer compared to taking my time against such large numbers of enemies. Singular monsters were quite rare in this dungeon aside from the beginning of the floor, so taking out at least some of the monsters quickly was preferable. It didn't matter how much money I had to pay to gain that benefit. I wasn't using most of the materials I had farmed to get the levels I needed in the first place.
And while I did have the option of purely using magic against enemies like this that could damage weaker weapons, I preferred to keep as many cards on the table as I could. I never knew when something I stopped using would become important out of nowhere, so I maintained several fighting styles, from different types of magic to both weapon and unarmed fighting.
Experience had taught me that not being ready to use alternatives was a quick way to lose an unexpected fight.
Versatility and flexibility, on top of strength and wit were all things necessary to survive.
It was unfortunate that I didn't have a yard stick to measure myself with though.
But for now, this scythe would do.
I think you need to actually look up some videos of scythe combat, because the way you wrote this chapter involved her doing some things that a grim reaper design scythe would not be capable of doing. (And your description of the thing was of the grim reaper style.)
A reaper's scythe, which is of the same design as a farmer's scythe, can only cut by drawing the blade toward yourself unless you are doing something very unusual like I just described. There is such a thing as a war scythe, but they are actually closer to naginatas or sword-staffs in design. They turn the blade 90 degrees and make it parallel to the shaft. It is actually IMPOSSIBLE to swing a reaper/farmer style scythe and cut something by doing so. You can only cut by holding the shaft on the other side of the target and then pulling. Swinging it might be able to drive the blade into something like a military pick if the blade has a good sharp point, but that wouldn't cut, that would penetrate. It would not be rending anything in two.
Really, you should have gone with the military pick if it was a choice between the two. However, there are still better options. Some kind of bec-de-corbin is probably the best option. Basically, a pole-arm military pick with a spike at the top and some other heavier weapon on the back end. (Bec-de-corbin is French for "crow's beak" and refers to the pick portion and can technically have anything on the other end and still be considered a bec-de-corbin, however popular culture today primarily thinks of the hammer being the back-end part. Most of this is because the other popular option is an axe, which is already called a halberd in England. A claw is another acceptable back-portion for it though, if only because real examples we have found actually use claws more frequently than hammers. (A claw is a weapon that's like the end of a crow bar.))
Anyway, the scythe was definitely a bad choice. Anyone who has a concept of realism in combat at all is going to have their immersion broken immediately by your description of the combat as it was done in this chapter, and an accurate description of what combat with a farmer's style scythe would look like makes it immediately obvious it's not an effective weapon at all.
@sZoK The argument you are making has been thoroughly rejected by all comptent authors in existence.
If you are using fantasy concepts, it is encumbant upon you to be EVEN MORE realistic with the things that have IRL equivalents for the sake of grounding your story.
Also, cutting with a piercing weapon is not something that should ever be considered acceptable anywhere. (As I mentioned, a scythe is a piercing weapon if you are swinging it. It can only cut if you are pulling it, and there is no way for it to slash.) What was written here is literally the equivalent of thrusting with a spear and somehow cutting the enemy in two as a result. Basic laws of logic and physics have to apply, and this chapter defies them by a criminally large degree.
Agreed, i still don't understand why people think of the scythe as a weapon considering it isnt one at all. By the description i thought it was a war pick but then there was the mention of "cutting" during the fight. I was actually excited with Scarlet using a polearm (instead of a sword) but now that's gone due to it being a scythe.
@Laius I don't think logic applies to things like these fantasy novels and such
I guess a glaive would have made more sense ? But don't forget that the MC has inhumane strength so she could do what a human can't
@Zee202 It's not that a human can't do what she did, it's that a scythe can't do what she did with a scythe. It's physically impossible for the weapon, that's not going to change just because she has superhuman strength. She's not going to cut things with an ice-pick no matter how hard she thrusts with it. Her superhuman strength can drive the thing straight through her target and perforate it catastrophically, but it's physically impossible for her to cut it.
Same logic applies to cleaving things in half by swinging a scythe. The blade is just on the wrong part of the weapon. The blade is not facing the target when you swing it.
Strength is not going to change that. The only thing that would change that is if the scythe physically warped and became more glaive shaped when she swung it, and no indication was given of that.
@Crazedpanda1987 Bullshit. Suspension of disbelief can totally happen piecemeal, rather than all or nothing. Even if the fantasy world runs on different physical rules to our own, it still has its own internal logic it has established and has to stay faithful to. And that totally means we can still call out an author's bullshit.
> Hurr hurr, it's a fantasy world, it can do whatever it wants
f*cking smoothbrains.
@0xFFF1 I think the hostility, if anyone, should be directed at @Laius who he was responding to. The mere fact he included an @ reply to that individual in his post makes this one of those instances where you can't tell whether or not it's sarcasm. I think I'm going to error on the side of sarcasm in this instance.
@Jemini It's the internet. It's not a matter of telling if someone is sarcastic. The emotional sideband that sarcasm occupies in face-to-face verbal communication is dropped and lost when communicating with text over the internet. Determining sarcasm is completely impossible. Therefore, the only option left is that you surrender your right to choose whether or not you are sarcastic when communicating over the internet. Just like they can do to you, you can just decide whether or not they were serious or sarcastic, or some combination thereof, and then respond to them accordingly.
It's described as super heavy. I imagine it's quite wide unlike the traditional scythe.
What if it was similar to Testament's scythe from Guilty Gear? It's double bladed, and curved toward the user so much that you can cut with the back edge where usually it's flat.
@Daitengu It's not described as large, it's described as being made of adamantium, which is a metal that's described as being especially heavy. Beings it's not described as being especially large, we can only assume that all the weight comes from the material.
The only descriptor we are given is that it has some fluting to remove some of the weight while maintaining structural integrity. If it's being that weight conscious, I think that implies exactly the opposite of it being otherwise especially large or ornate.
@0xFFF1 I honestly don't care if a scythe makes a good weapon or not. I mean war scythes are a thing they just don't look like the reaper scythe. The real issue is a Scythe is a weak weapon, specially ill suited for fighting armored foes. It makes no sense for the blacksmith to make one when he's trying to make a more durable weapon than a Bardiche.
@Jemini The thing is, comparing the discription of the scythe to the previous polearm, as well as comparing similar in rl, the scythe would have to have much more material in it than a standard sized scythe.
To your credit the shape discription of the scythe is lacking. Like there's hundreds of styles of longsword.
@Daitengu I'm going by the description, and the description sounds like a typical reaper's scythe with a fluted middle to the blade. If you're going to assume more to give it the things it "should" have in order to make it work, you might as well go ahead and make it a war scythe. But, the description pretty clearly made it a reaper's scythe, so that would be just as wrong as assuming it has more material than described.
Once again, if it's being weight conscious, then it is not made with extra material. This would actually be running directly counter to what we can infer from the explanation.
My entire complaint in the OP is that the descriptions we are given do not make sense. The issues you are bringing up about integrity issues in the design are just one more point we can bring up for things that need to be corrected about this thing.
@Jemini It seemed to me that it's being weight conscious so that it can be an even bigger weapon than it could be otherwise, accounting for Scarlet's stats.
Honestly if you want to cut someone in fullplate in half with a weapon made from the same material no polearm is going to cut it. Sharpness and speed do not matter, unless it's enchanted to not take damage at all, what you need is a thick heavy weapon like berserk's or Nightmare's(soul caliber 3) sword.
@ShadeByTheSea Axes are fine for it imo. But it'll have to have an armor piercing point in the middle to prevent the plates from deflecting the blow from sub optimal angles. Or the traditional crescent moon axe shape where the axe blade is inverted compared to a standard felling axe. The top and bottom tips dig into armor rather well, and pull the armor towards the center of the blade to prevent shallow cuts.
For what it's worth Jemini, I was being a contrarin as a reference for our foxy writer. So they can either work the scythe description better, or give it up for some over sized halberd with appropriate shaped bits. Or just get a spiked warmaul for armored targets. Where bashing the duck out of armor makes sense and is why maces, flails, and mauls were a thing to begin with. Though, most polearms did a rather good job against knights.
Our vamp just has a problem of fighting far longer than weapons were designed for. Also might be worth it to revisit hand cannons.
I mostly just find it funny how some of you assume that a reaper scythe can't cut something in half, I get it's mostly a piercing weapon, but the blade of a reaper scythe is double edged so if the blade is wide enough you can cut something all the way through. If anyone wants to test this just push a double edged blade into the center of a fruit that has a diameter smaller than the blade width edge to edge, sure you're piercing the fruit but you're also cutting it in half
Hmm, it seems like I was very lacking in quite a few ways with this chapter.
While I am aware that normally a scythe is a poor weapon (especially the reaper style rather than the adjusted war scythe), I did hope that the idea would work.
A war pick (and similar weapons like the bec de corbin) might be more effective IRL, the need to do more general damage than simply piercing the flesh under the armour was the main justification of the scythe.
I'll fix up the descriptions (both of the weapon and the fighting). Hopefully it'll come off as more believable when I do so.
In the meantime, tell me if you feel like the idea is still workable? With the scythe being large with a wide blade, and being consistent with the draw cuts. Pierce into slice.
@Tunefullcobra a double edged scythe might be able to cut some things in half at close range. It wouldn't however be able to cut someone in fullplate in half, the blade would fold in on itself and likely snap off. It's be different if the scythe was adamantine and the armor iron or steel, but when both are adamantine it just wasn't work.
@Daitengu Ok. Well, if we're going to shift the discussion into other options going particularly into types of axes, I think a fairly good option would be some guillotine style axes such as the Igorot axe. I've actually designed an Igorot axe for my own story, although I used it more for the fact that if you make an Igorot axe double-bit and then add some ornate add-ons it could easily be mistaken for a staff from a distance. (I have a little bit of a ninja theme going, so getting disguised weapons is important. If you want to see the design, all you have to do is check out my Key to the Void series. It's right on the cover. That thing the girl in the back is holding is not a staff, it's the axe I'm talking about.)
Anyway, an Igorot or guillotine style axe has a prominent leading edge to it and then slants the rest of the blade at an angle compared to the surface it's meant to cut. This design allows for very clean cuts through flesh. The design of these axes is literally to make them a hand-held guillotine for the exact same purpose, but it can also be equally good for penetrating harder materials such as armor due to that prominent leading spike that the axe has.
(The author wanted an underappreciated weapon that still served the purpose. Well, an Igorot axe is not just a better yet extremely underappreciated weapon, it also serves almost an identical purpose to the grim reaper's scythe. Removing heads from bodies. Except, unlike the reaper's scythe doing that only in theory or lore or on a spiritual plain where the reaper would not be facing much obstruction, the Igorot axe was actually used IRL for executions. (BTW, Igorot is always capitalized. It's the name of the Pacific island tribe that designed the axe.))
@Tunefullcobra No, the reaper scythes are not double edged. Not in standard depictions or in lore. That would be a more effective design for battle (barely) than what's really out there, but the fact is that no depiction of a reaper's scythe I've ever seen has it being double-edged. Even if you have seen one, it was likely in some show room made by somebody who decided to get creative with the design.
Even most video game depictions brace the back side of the scythe with bones or something if they are going for a particularly edgy design. Making it double edged is not the standard. You just made that up, so I would ask you to kindly not spout off something you just pulled out of your ass as though it's common knowledge.
@Jemini look up reaper scythe on Google images. First image that came up for me was a double edged scythe with a crooked pole. And get off your high horse because your not the only one here who knows how to use your brain
@Ninetailed_Furball I really have a hard time seeing how you can change the descriptions of the combat to include only draw cuts without getting Scarlet pulverized as a result of trying to cut these guys. It's only really possible if she completely subdues them first, places the blade at a weak point, and then pulls.
The scythe is beyond not being an effective weapon. Her claws would be better than a scythe in every conceivable way. The amount of subduing she would have to do before cutting anything with the thing would be such that she could have shredded it with her claws long before she got there.
The whole point of having a weapon made of adamantite is so it can stand up to being used for heavy blows. A scythe is not capable of delivering heavy blows at all. It defeats the purpose. (Unless you just do the smart thing and make it a war scythe, or otherwise change it to a different weapon.)
@ShadeByTheSea it's a matter of sharpness not just the materials
@Tunefullcobra Again, some creative weapon smith made a scythe with a blade that could make it barely more combat effective. The point is, that's not the common depiction in any art, video game, or lore. It's a modification, and not a commonly accepted one.
EDIT: And yes, for a grim reaper scythe the authority on the subject is going to be medieval art depictions and lore, because that's what we have as the image of the grim reaper. Anything that doesn't conform is a modification. The artworks depict the grim reaper having something very close in nature to a farmer's scythe. Anything that is not similar to a farmer's scythe that's being called a reaper's scythe is a modification on the lore.
EDIT2: Also, the reason I am being very condiscending to you in particular is because you took such a snotty attitude as though your perversion on the lore was supposed to be something everyone should just know as common knowledge. Well, you're dead wrong on this one. You came up with an odd-man-out on the design here. Try showing me a famous depiction of the grim reaper holding a double-edged scythe. I would be surprised if you could even find one. If you actually do though, I could very quickly come up with 20 famous examples the grim reaper holding a single-edge scythe in far less time than it took you to find your one, and you will be plenty aware of how much easier my job is than yours just in the process of searching for your one example. (Again, the criteria are 1. famous depiction, 2. held by the grim reaper.)
@Ninetailed_Furball If we're set on making a scythe work than some of these designs might work if someone had the strength to actually use them.

The blade on this next one would work but not the pole

Note how there Blades are not only wide, but also thick, at least 5 cm(2 inches) at their thickest. They are also generally on the straiter side and solid connects to the pole with counter weights on the end. The counter weights not only help balance the weapon but you can bash people with it. My other suggestion would be a durability enchantment ontop of the repair enchantment.
@Tunefullcobra sharpness is meaningless if they metal is the same hardness. A razor blade has no hope of meaningfully harming a steel plate.
@ShadeByTheSea also this is just my theory but I'm guessing that skills also affect weapon durability and sharpness slightly which adds unaccountable variables into the mix
@Jemini Just want to point out that the point of an adamantite weapon was actually to counter the hero's sword, something her claws couldn't.
@ShadeByTheSea that's actually dependent on how sharp the razor blade is, because most razor blades are more designed for durability but if you get a blade that's tip is around an atom thick even if the razor and the steel plate are the exact same chemical compound, the razor blade will cut the steel plate, now when I say that I recognize that the blade will break in that scenario due to too much force but please remember the system has priority over physics in this world.
@Jemini please define famous as with my definition it's impossible to find any famous art of the grim reaper
@Jemini also as you yourself pointed out the reaper's scythe has seen no actual known historical use thus it is a fictional weapon and can therefore do anything the author wishes it to do, and with the system having priority over physics anything we say about the weapon being pointless, useless or usefull is a mute point.
Edit: also this scythe is made of an unrealistic material thus we have no knowledge as to how the material will react under any situation the author hasn't straight up told us about.
@Tunefullcobra damn this over 30 comments and around 5k words over a scythe
@Crazedpanda1987 I know right haha
well that's just how far some people will go over something they feel passionate about and laughing at it is disrespectful, so please don't.
So, long story short, scythe bad because farmers use it despite it having appear in a lot of Games and Novels as a deadly weapons...
Ok 「(°ヘ°)
@Jemini "all competent authors thoroughly rejected", seriously man, bringing "all" is worst way to start argument. And If we go by realism, as you want, then 99,9% of authors will be "incompetent". From quivers and swords, especially two-handers, on the back to characters running around and swinging their weapon like crazy. It's all unrealistic and not like things worked in actual history. But question is, would it be fun if fights were like two men standing against each other, looking for right opportunity to strike? So fight consists of few swings, but each deadly. Since that's how it went on battlefields of middle-ages, most remains have serious damage from one heavy strike.
As for scythe, well that's how image go, based on how it seem to be used in farming by view of your regular city person. Add some wild imagination on top of that and here you have it - some crazy slashes while spinning. Is it realistic? Hell, no. Is it fun? Yes.
The thing is, i read fantasy novels to relax and have fun, like, i assume, most other people. So i'm fine with some things being actually unrealistic, as long as it is nothing too crazy. Some regular misconceptions taking place? You can even take that as "grounding" the story.
EDIT. Lol, that moment when you open chapter and start reading in the morning, finish it in late evening due to irl, write answer to comment and then there is few dozens replies to it .
@Indream I'm referring to the argument of "It's a fantasy story with magic, therefore no rules of logic have to apply at all." And yes, ALL compitent authors reject that argument either explicitly in their own words or implicitly with their writing style. Every compitent author at least tries to ground their works of fiction in some degree of realism to the best of their knowledge.
And yes, I stick to the absolutism of "all" in this case because 1. It's true. 2. The fact that this statement is actually true and I actually am able to use an absolutism in this argument means that using a tactic that's normally a chink in your armor in any other debate but actually works out in this one will demonstrate just how stupid the "rules of logic do not apply to fantasy" argument actually is. It makes a point.
The target of that statement was at the specific commenter that made that stupid argument. You can make whatever points you want about Furball applying some common misconceptions, it wasn't directed at him. It was directed at the "logic does not apply" guy.
@Tunefullcobra "famous" would mean any depiction in a video game that you can easily find video game Youtubers with over 1,000 subscribers talking about, movie portrayals in movies that are of at least B list quality, and I will also state that any medieval artwork would count because medieval artwork implies that this would be a famous image at the time if not now. (In fact, I will grant more points to medieval artwork due to the raised authenticity.)
Seems like a pretty lenient definition of "famous" to me. And again, the challenge is to find even one that depicts a double-edged blade on the scythe, and I can nullify any one you present by presenting 20 that fit the same criteria of single-edged scythes. You will find out that I actually have the easier job in this endavor. The purpose here is to prove that you are being ridiculous with your "everyone knows that reaper's scythes are double edged" attitude, so you really should find out you are just being ridiculous with even an attempt at trying this challenge.
@Azel Games and novels frankly don't know what they're talking about. The facts are, scythes are not PRACTICAL weapons or fit for combat.
Also, the real imputus for this argument was that the depictions of combat in the chapter have Scarlet doing things that the scythe is not physically capable of doing (the equivalent of cutting with a blunt instrument.) That's what inspired the argument to start, but while we were at it I also brought up the wider impracticality of the scythe as a weapon.
@Jemini believe it or not the grim reaper only started appearing around the 15th century while the midieval period was about 500 A.D. to 1500.
@Tunefullcobra You know exactly what I mean, stop trolling. If you would like me to spell it out, then fine. "Historical artwork from before the industrial era."
Point still stands. Even if you can find just one example, I can easily find 20 to counter.
@Jemini and again the author has final say as physics doesn't apply to this world where the system is involved.
@Jemini that wasn't trolling but since you seem so high and mighty go ahead and think so "your holiness"
And no I don't know exactly what you meant since I can't read minds
@Tunefullcobra See earlier arguments. The "physics and logic does not apply to fantasy" argument is rejected by ALL competent authors, and I will use an absolutism on that one.
Applying concepts of super strength is valid, but physics still applies. You can make up new rules as you like as the author, but the world needs to stay internally consistent with those new rules you've stated.
Also, a rule that piercing weapons do slashing damage to a point it can rend a large statue sized object made of highly durable materials perfectly in half is so ridiculous that you would need to make a very big point of it in order to set up such an absurdity.
@Jemini "You can make up new rules as you like as the author, but the world needs to stay internally consistent with those new rules you've stated."
I agree wholeheartedly with these words since they destroy your entire argument
@Ninetailed_Furball at this point I'm going to suggest you disregard this entire conversation as nothing productive will come of it. Just do your own thing and ignore us
@Tunefullcobra Right, definitely trolling at this point. You are not trying to arrive at any point of reasonable argument here, you are lawyering about with the exact definitions of exact terms other people use, while not applying this rule to yourself anywhere.
For the reccord, @Ninetailed_Furball never made a rule in the universe that piercing weapons do slashing damage, therefore there is nothing about this argument that invalidates anything. Also, his writing thus far implies he wants to represent a historically underappreciated weapon. This would imply wanting a degree of accuracy in the weapon, which was not properly represented in this chapter.
Point sufficiently made. I will ignore all further arguments from this troll now.
Well you certainly are good entertainment, though I've only trolled once with the your holiness comment so far, mostly because I noticed your anger issues and slight superiority complex, and I find it amusing to screw with people like yourself.
After all the source of all comedy is the loss/pain inflicted upon others
@Jemini my point still stands. If we go by realism, there're almost no competent authors, if any at all. So i don't see problem in author using misconceptions or things like that to make it more interesting, or simply because he got caught in them. That's why i honestly facepalmed with all this comment section. Yes scythe, reaper style, is not a weapon and it is freaking cliche. But let's be honest, there were a lot of things which are unrealistic, even entire fights. So i honestly don't get all this mess of comments started since damn scythe and it's misconcepted use in combat maked appearence, almost demanding author to change/rewrite it. Too late with something small like this, no?
@Indream The problem was the fact that a non-cutting part of the weapon was slicing things in two. I cannot be the only person who's immersion was broken by something THAT blatantly off. At least the other misconceptions and points of inconsistency in this story weren't completely destroying the laws of physics once you account for super strength.
(flying with wings that are too small or forgetting that some points where she was flying at day didn't cause an issue have nothing on the blatant reality breaking of something that's the equivalent of a spear slicing things like a sword.)
It's just a point that when one thing like that is wrong with something, it tends to be a crack in the dam with a lot more than just that one little point behind it, and all the stuff started flowing out at once.
@Jemini for the flying with small wings, that's skill assisted. Flying at day had the robes and poncho(I think that's what it was, can't remember off the top of my head). Spears actually can be used to cut like swords though it's a very rare usage. and it wasn't a non-cutting part as it was part of the blade, so I think you ARE the only person. Or at least a part of the 0.01percentile
Edit: thinking back I forget if Scarlet's wings were actually small. I remember the dragonkin boy complimenting them, and I'm pretty sure since he mistook her for another dragonkin her wings must be big enough to at least reach the tips of her fingers otherwise he'd have not mistaken her for a dragonkin.
Edit 2: Actually the vampire she fought was able to put holes in her wings when she was facing him so definitely not small.
@Jemini you would be surprised, but most people would accept it, since they don't know how it actually is. Some people who know, would ignore it since it's more fun/cool this way. So yeah, i think it's fine for Scarlet to go edgy with scythe. At least it's fun. Unlike hero fight for example (way to many illogical moments in my opinion).
@Indream I think the main reason some of us complained is because it's so cliché. So they could at least have her use a more realistic version of a scythe(a reaper scythe is not more realistic for combat use) that could do what she does with it(it'd just be too heavy to use irl, but stats beat that)
I also really liked her Bardiche, and expected a smith to come out with something more durable than it. Instead we got a scythe, which is arguably a lot less durable.
Some people also just have pet-peeves. Mine is when people use water vapor for water spells, sure it's viable for a small icicle, but no way is there enough water vapor to make a wall of ice.
But we're just going in circles now, so it might be time to end the discussion and admit that all of us make some good points, but none of us are 100% right, and even if some of us will cringe every time her scythe is mentioned, we'll likely still read the story.
@ShadeByTheSea 50 comments and 8k words now
@ShadeByTheSea well i would have prefered glaive/naginata. But thats me. Someone can see Scarlet using heavy two-handed sword. Etc. But that's our "wants". Author have his own vision about it. No point in starting all this sh*t storm about weapon and it's use being unrealistic just because of that, someone even claiming about bad writting and breaking immersion. It's not. Unless you are really hardcore middle-ages fan.
@Crazedpanda1987 and the fun has only just begun in this pointless argument (now I wonder if he's stupid enough that reverse psychology works on him)
@Tunefullcobra Well it's going to be a looooooong one so I'll come back after my exams to probably 130 comments or so of bickering
@Crazedpanda1987 who knows. Maybe it'l be past the 150 mark
@Tunefullcobra Well then I guess reading all the comments will lessen my depression maybe ( I despise my exams )
@Crazedpanda1987 good luck and best wishes for your exams
@Tunefullcobra Thank you I'mma sleep now or else might doze off the moment my brain short-circuits while writing
@Ninetailed_Furball
Hello!! First, my condolences to you for getting all this heat because one guy got butthurt. I realize this is crazy coming from me when I got...upset with that battle with the hero...and my comments....
Anyway, when you introduced the weapon, I tried picturing it and thought it was suitable for her. In general, I think that long bladed polearms are suitable for her.
The problem everyone is having with your scythe came from when you introduced it into a fighting style. A scythe in application is similar to a katana. It is a slashing weapon. It is the draw of the blade across the point of contact that makes it especially lethal. Though I guess the word 'slash' sounds lackluster now. It is not a piercing weapon and I am glad that you pointed out her mistake when Scarlet pierced through that last automata. This weapon is not a hacking weapon either, like an ax. Though it does have weight going for it and that enchantment to bring it back to 100%....though, it feels like a limiter needs to be put on that enchantment. It's almost like you're saying that if a bit of that blade was to be separated from the weapon that the enchantment could fix it without the loss of weight or volume that separated piece took.
Back to the fight. Sorry but I don't remember you mentioning the height of the weapon. It's important because when she went to attack from bottom to top of that automata, there's a disconnect on what our minds perceive would happen first. For me, my thought was that it would be interfered with by the ground or something....even if the automata were rather tall her scythe is limited by her height. The attacks from the side, though, I thought it was fine. The only other point of complaint would be...to reinforce the image of the blade of the scythe. To make the scythe an one edged battle worthy blade, it needs a thick spine so that it doesn't break, if you really want to keep the grim reaper curved scythe image that scarlet wields, while being practical to battle, describe it...with an illusionary physical appearance. No, not making magic make it seem as such, but rather describe the spine in such a way that it makes the scythe itself seem as though the blade curves when it's actually a straight blade. My biggest hint for that would be to reference the hamon of katanas. It's that bit of the katana with the wave pattern.
She does need a secondary weapon for CQC and a few throwing weapons. She does have her claws and magic and while her claws may be good enough, mixing magic attacks with throwing weapons will make her more lethal.
Hope any of this was helpful!
@IllOmened
And if anyone tries to say a scythe is a piercing weapon again, please, for my sanity look back to what farmers applied it to! They used to harvest crops with long stalks and to cut grass! In no way was it a piercing tool!
In my opinion! I think the scythe was created to replace the sickle! All that bending over and shuffling around on the ground makes for back breaking work! With the scythe you could do all that standing!
....there is a solid argument that the sickle was created to replace the scythe because the resources it took to create a scythe could create a couple sickles and that time period was around when slavery was popular and nobody cared back then.
@IllOmened I'm pretty sure we were talking about the reaper version not the farmer's tool when we called the scythe a piercing weapon
@Tunefullcobra
...is that so? My bad. All the references I know (which isn't a lot) still reference it as cutting to harvest, though. There was like 2 anime that show they only need to touch with the blade to harvest (don't remember their names) but that was more of a back reference to reaper's touch of death. You would be touched by his skeletal finger and die then be harvested by his scythe, cutting the connection of soul to body to prevent the rise of the dead...is how I vaguely remember one story. (Not one of the animes)
@IllOmened The problem was that Scarlet was swinging the scythe, and it is simply not possible to swing a scythe and slash with it in the same motion due to how it is designed.
Also, there is no difference between the reaper version and the farmer version traditionally.
The reason I was talking about piercing is because piercing is the only thing that's possible if you are going to swing it. And, I concur, that is not an effective use of the weapon.
The only way to slash with a scythe is to bring it behind something and then pull it in toward yourself. It is just not designed in a way that would make it effective in combat because your options are 1. Swing it and pierce with the tip (which is not what it's designed for) or 2. Move the blade behind your target and then pull the scythe back toward you, which is a slow multi-step motion not practical for combat.
I would return this back at you. Think of what Scythes were traditionally designed to do. They are for harvesting wheat, and are effectively little more than lawn mowers in effect. Not a practical combat weapon.
@Jemini
Yeah you can just stop now. Please. I didn't even read your comment but I'm sure whatever you said was something that you've already said in your other comments. You are beating a dead horse.
EDIT
Read your comment and...surprise! Nothing new.
Regretfully, this is not your novel. Stop pushing the author to change the story for you. In this chapters comment my intent was to present my thoughts for the author. Yours have been full on degrading even the thought of the use of a scythe as a weapon. Please stop.
To everyone who knows my other comments for this novel, I am aware of the hypocrisy. Please keep the roasting on medium burn, lol.
@Jemini "no difference between the reaper version and the farmer version traditionally" try looking for famous pictures of the farmer version without the handle about halfway up the shaft. I can easily produce twenty pictures that have the handle ROFFLMAO
@Tunefullcobra
Please stop the back and forth. This guy feels it's an unsuitable weapon. He's made several comments stating as such and let's just leave it at that.
I apologize author, for the rage your getting in the comments. If there's anything in the comments that you feel is helpful, then I hope you utilize them, but I hope you don't feel you have to answer to what we want. Don't feel you have to change anything going forward.
@IllOmened sorry about that. As the cat of this relationship I can't help but tease him, and he provided such a perfect opportunity for it.
And to NineTailed_Furrball: I agree with illOmened about how you shouldn't feel too pressured into changing your story to fit your audience. Make the story uniquely yours, maybe get some inspiration from the comments if you want to but always make sure it's your story you're telling and not someone else's because THAT is how you make a good story that you can be proud of.
Edit: please note though that I've never written anything longer than a page for school so I'm not speaking from experience.
@IllOmened Hmmm.... 12 likes on the OP Vs. 1 on yours and 6 on the next highest liked comment. I wonder where the majority sides on this issue.
I'm sure there's a lot of people who don't like the whole back-and-forth, but all I was doing was either 1. Straightening out people who were asking for some additional clarity, or 2. unwisely responding to trolls like the other fellow here.
Bottom line though is that the like ratio indicates probably more people think the scythe is an unsuitable weapon Vs. those who think it is an Ok weapon for her to be using.
(Also, your comment indicates you've read the entire thread. All I was saying was that your comment about the scythe being a slashing weapon was inaccurate, which the only way you could think it is a slashing anything is if you have not understood what was being said. It is not for slashing, it is for cutting. Like the razors you shave your face or legs with. As in, you do not drag scythes across things. You cut with them with just pure pressure due to how razor sharp they are. Also, things sharpened to that keen an edge do not make good weapons because the acute edge does not hold well against hard objects like metal and bone.)
@Jemini so a post that's a few days old, posted around the time the chapter came out, has more likes than a post from today, posted a few days after most people have stopped looking at this page... I find your logic in how you compare them like they're equals confusing.
Also it's actually rather sad that you've devolved into using likes on your comment to determine who's won, almost like you recognise you were just trying to cause conflict from the start.
@Tunefullcobra Fella, you have already indicated you in no way intend to be anything but disingenuous with any of your comments a long time back.
I suppose the 1 like came from you. And, yes, maybe it was a low blow, but the latter part about the next highest comment having 6 still counts. (The next highest comment was posted 2 hours before the OP here.)
Also, if you would like a more accurate comparison, scroll down the 1st day comments. The next one with 6 likes is neutral on the scythe. The next one after that which has 3 suggests a different weapon for scarlet, and the one after that which has 2 likes is the first one that actually praises the scythe. If you want more of a fair test to say who's really winning, well, there it is.
(Now watch all the topics that praise the scythe increase by 1 because you want to be spiteful now that it's been called out.)
Anyway, yes, that comment about 1 on his was mostly a jab. However, it also points out that he's just one person saying something while the actual like ratios paint a very different story from what his words are saying. He, and you, are just a loud minority. I'm also loud, but the likes ratio indicates I represent the majority on this issue.
Now then, because you seem unable to make a genuine argument and just want to troll, I am going to ask you to stop responding to me. If you do, I will report for harassment. I have indicated I want nothing more to do with you in this discussion once already, but you did not seem to take the hint back then. So this time, I'm spelling it out clearly.
@Jemini none of us have any idea what those likes mean is my point, they could mean that someone liked the amount of detail in the comment. Also I'm flattered that you think so highly of me but I'm not on your level of pettiness.(ok I'll admit I'm going low on this one but eff it)
Though I am actually curious about how I appear disingenuous to you, excluding the three comments including this one where I'm obviously poking fun at you, all of which I've openly called myself out on.
@Tunefullcobra Should I go down the list? 1. Saying that reapers scythes are double-edged as if everyone knows that's the case, where as in every popular media that depicts the grim reaper it's always single-edged.
2. Calling out technicalities such as the medievel comment I made. Any NORMAL person would see medeivel and assume it means pre-industrial (maybe pre-renosance if they have some education) and if they happen to know better they would give the benefit of the doubt on that one.
(EDIT: For #2, it was more of the "got-cha, you're an idiot" approach you used. A person who was not being disingenuous would have said something more like "I don't think Medievel is what you meant to communicate, did you perhaps mean...")
3. Attacking the tone instead of the argument. This is especially bad because I was just being informative, and you were being a sh*t head. Of course I would get upset at someone intentionally stirring up trouble in the ways seen above. Then, after being such a shit-head, you take an attitude of "oh, you're getting angry, now that justifies any further shitty thing I do."
4. Every time I try to make an argument you try to dodge it by calling me emotional. Not once have you actually presented a fact-based counter-argument. Every single thing you have said are either appeals to emotion or just saying I'm somehow wrong because I'm angry at your bad behavior.
All of these are disingenuous tactics, and you are really the biggest reason this thread turned ugly in the first place. It's true that I fell for your baiting troll ways, but now I am pointing out that all these things you are doing are very low-brow scummy tactics in terms of online discussion. I am not convinced that you wouldn't be aware of what you were doing, but if you didn't then now you know. Even these self call-outs are further attempts at baiting because you are trying to ignore the fact that you were the one who started the mess with the trollish behavior first.
Now, I responded to that because it needed to be spelled out clearly for posterity sake. I really am through with you, and I really will report you for the next comment if it is anything other than something to the effect of "Ok, I'm stepping off now, sorry for being a troll."
This includes making comments about me directed at someone else. If you respond to me or anyone else in this thread I will report you. This is the third time I am saying this, and I am being extremely clear about exactly why I am saying it. Every single thing you say in this thread seems to be designed to do nothing but stir up trouble, whether it's to me or to others.
@Tunefullcobra you even started calling me a troll after I tried to get clarification on the wording of the challenge you were issuing. I won't claim I had any intentions of actually accepting the challenge, though I'm very confident I didn't make it seem like I was actually going to.
@Jemini 1. In my common sense reaper scythes can be double or single edged. Though that's not disingenuous at all.
2. I was trying to get clarification so that I wasn't assuming anything.
3. Please elaborate. Also I question how that's being disingenuous.
4. I won't deny that I've called you emotional in a broad sense. As for dodging questions, I don't really have a response for that. The best I can say is I'm too lazy to go back and read my own comments to check, so I'll take your word on it.
As for the rest of what you said; Feel free to report me all you want if you feel I am deserving of it. Not like I can stop you, and if I am the reason this turned ugly then you need to have one eye on a mirror and one on me when you say that.
@Tunefullcobra terrible grammar on that one, Yeesh.
@Tunefullcobra Edited for clarity if you want. Last response.
EDIT: Also, if you don't get why attacking the tone instead of the argument is a disingenuous tactic then look up logic fallacies. It's on the list. Also, most people already acknowledge it's a shitty tactic even without having to look up the reason. It's one of those tactics that's just shitty on it's face.
EDIT: Also, I did call myself out for responding to you. The reason the thread turned ugly was that you were being a troll and I fell for your bait. Yes, that's 2 people involved, but it's the troll who's at fault for making it ugly in the first place because the troll was the person acting with intention. Telling me to look in the mirror in this case is nothing but victim blaming.
@Jemini ahhh that(thank you for the clarity btw). My intention wasn't to make you out to be an idiot, or give a got'chya statement. I was just trying to state a random fact and it got misinterpreted, though I won't claim I did anything to stop that. But it wasn't a calculated move or anything and even ended up with you clarifying your time period for the pictures down to an exact value
@Jemini then I guess we're both victim blaming since I wasn't intending to troll for the most part(again, there were three I pointed out)
And yes I do predict that you're going to call my wording here disingenuous which I won't deny as I am being calculative.
This part is just me going on a tangent so ignore it if you wish(and I honestly suggest you do): disingenuous happens to mean calculative though for some reason most people seem to think it means something similar to dishonorable which I find interesting as it's usually used in a negative meaning when it can actually be used in a good meaning too.
@Tunefullcobra Right, well, now you know what it's like. If you really weren't trying to stir up trouble, then maybe you won't go off assuming the worst of others and using your false assumptions to justify yourself being a d*ck-head. Because, I don't care what you thought of me. As soon as you started doing that you met the definition of a troll for all intents and purposes.
If you were, as you self-admitted, trying to "rile me up," then that's being a troll no matter what your original intentions were, and now you can see where your actions were the direct cause of most of what this turned into. Or at least I hope so. This is me trying to assume the best. Please don't turn this into another fight.
@Tunefullcobra I happen to like random facts. Spewing them out also.
@Jemini hate to break it to you, but this has been a most amusing argument to me. Would love to do this again on another topic. Though with how you currently view me I find that unlikely. Oh well, our game of cat and dog was fun. Now run along little pup, tail between your legs as it is. "troll" out(hope my imitation of a troll was to your satisfaction Crazedpanda)
@Jemini @Tunefullcobra
Sweet dear lord, BOTH OF YOU CHILDREN SHUT UP and get off this thread if you want to continue bickering! Continue this pointless argument on either one of your home pages.
@Tunefullcobra, sorry I would rather side with you but you are giving this guy ammo to continue arguing. This is pettiness that has devolved into irrelevance of this chapter and more about which one of you is right.
@Jemini your pettiness to continue arguing your point just so people can see how much of a disgusting prideful individual you are is sickening. I have asked you to stop. You have made your stance clear several times and yet you still continue like a child arguing that he's right. While I'm sure most of your knowledge is interesting and possibly even right, I hope that you are ignored from this point on as the simple troll that you so seem to despise and accuse others of being.
@IllOmened Dude, you don't get to come into someone else's thread and take that attitude. You can leave. All I've seen from you is 1. You are all children, 2. This whole argument is ridiculous, 3. I didn't read your post because reasons, 4. I came into YOUR thread and told YOU to stop, so why aren't you rolling over and bowing to my wisdom?
Fine attitude man. I'm not even going to bother trying to talk reason to you then. If you don't want to discuss the actual points of anything in this thread and instead just go on grand-standing then there is no place for you here. Butt out.
It seems like somehow @Tunefullcobra and I managed to leave this discussion on a somewhat less hostile note. From where I'm sitting, it looks very much like you are pulling your hair out over the fact that it looks like we might manage to make up and go our separate ways. We just calmed down one sh*t storm. If you're just here to stir up more trouble, we don't need it. I learned my lesson from the first time around about how trolls should be dealt with.
Normally, I would say something along the lines of "make a fact and reason based argument or leave." However, you've already pulled the "I didn't even read your comment" move, so I have zero patience to deal with you after that one.
@Jemini Wow! You guys are actually still about this topic. I thought you were done. Carry on , act like I'm not here *sips tea and studies math *
@Crazedpanda1987
Sorry to disappoint but the original topic was actually dropped and became petty arguments on who has a superior standing.
Reference jemini's last comment. The guy is just lashing out to be heard now. That or he thinks this is advertisement for his novel. I actually had it in my reading list and was making my way to reading it...but, seeing the confrontational attitude of the actual author...I don't know now.
@IllOmened he knows. It's just entertaining to watch the carnage.
@Crazedpanda1987 by the way how'd the exams go?
@Tunefullcobra
lol, and he continues on with a completely new topic. I don't know why that makes me laugh but it does.
@IllOmened well I am here for entertainment, be it mine or others, so glad to be of service.
@Tunefullcobra ................I write math tomorrow.......... I'm screwed............ I may suffer from a heart attack whilst writing.......... But look on the bright side every one else writing math will also did of heart attacks and the teacher will go to prison for mass killing students and I won't be lonely on the way to hell
@Crazedpanda1987 So I'm going to enjoy my (probably) last day on earth doing what I love : STRESS
@Crazedpanda1987 then stress away my good man. Stress away.
@Tunefullcobra Don't worry dude I'll be up Alllllllllllllll night
@Jemini whilst i understand your point from a logical standpoint, there might be an in-world reason for her ability. perhaps the scythe is so sharp that when the dense and heavy metal is swung with the full force of Scarlet(who might as well be a demi-god) the weapon would cleave through other material in a way that can be viewed as cutting. you have to remember that her stats are through the roof and that the scythe is an inchanted masterpiece. and the system does often break the laws of reality and physics in a way than can be viewed as giving phsycocanetic powers, perhaps some of that is inclueded in weapon skills like the spear arts skill that also aperently effects polarms. and Scarlet can create and edit skills, perhaps she changed some other skill to gain the ability to wield weapons unconventionaly? who knows?
also: i like your novels, pls write more van/ains fanfic.
@DragonBound16
phsycocanetic-->psychokinetic?
It's nice to try and understand him. However, the individual is denying any sort of fictional possibility for the scythe to be used as a proper weapon. Both for the shape of the weapon and it's function.
Given I can understand the Reality and most of what he means, it does not warrant his shaming Ninetail_Furball for using the scythe as a weapon.
@DragonBound16 If that is the case, it needs to be laid out that the things she is doing wouldn't usually work but for XYZ reason it does somehow.
I am sorry I am having a hard time responding in text that sounds level-headed considering the context of these other individuals constantly making mean-spirited comments that deny basic physics, but to continue on the point, if you are going to defy physics then you need to establish in-lore why it's possible to defy physics. Otherwise, it's just shoddy writing.
So far, it has not been established in-lore why it's possible to slash things with a part of the weapon that is not the cutting edge.
@DragonBound16 First, why do people keep reviving this, we must be bored.
My main issue isn't whether or not a scythe is cool, I think scythes are cool, but i know deep down it has some major but not insurmountable flaws as a weapon.
My issue is Scarlet handed a blacksmith a heavily damaged bardiche and said she needed something more durable and she can use against foes in fullplate made of the same metal. The smith then gives her a scythe, still made out of the same metal, with only a repair rune.
Whether or not the scythe is cool, it is not more durable or better against people in fullplate, than a bardiche. Heck a heavier bardiche with that repair rune would likely have been better. It's just illogical for a smith to make that choice.
For those who are complaining about the scythe needing to be logically explained: why does it need to be explained? Us debating it is a perfect example of this decision bearing fruit and generating interest in the book and chapter respectively, as it lets the readers come up with their own explanation.
As for the scythe vs bardiche, we don't know what skills affect which weapon. For all we know the scythe is affected by two weapon skills whilst the bardiche is only affected by one, giving the scythe an advantage in durability and damage over the bardiche. Maybe the repair enchantment works better on a scythe than a bardiche and that's why she was given it. Maybe he couldn't make another bardiche with the same materials so he went with a scythe. The point is we know next to nothing in regards to the subject.
And to be completely honest I thought this conversation was done. Glad to see it's continuing.
@Tunefullcobra Once again, if that's the explanation, the author needs to say so. If they do not, then we simply cannot assume. That would be going too far. As a matter of fact, @Ninetailed_Furball has already made a statement that the portrayal of the scythe in this chapter was a mistake. This tells us all explanations you are coming up with for why it might work were not the author's intention, and therefore are incorrect and do not apply. If the author had an explanation for why this works, they would have given those explanations rather than coming forward and saying the portrayal in this chapter was "lacking."
If she is cutting things with something other than the cutting edge, the author needs an explanation for why this somehow works. Likewise, if a scythe is being presented as more durable than other options, that also needs an explanation because, as noted, it is absolutely not more durable than a bardiche.
@Jemini alright then if you know that, why are you still repeating that it needs to happen when you have been told it will be corrected?
Have some patience
Edit: the author does not "need" to do anything when this isn't something they get paid to do. And yes we can assume, that's what a fan theory is, an assumption, and we here are all fans, enough that this comment thread is still being added to 9 days after it was started, and you've already made a few assumptions yourself such as a scythe not working in-world.
@Tunefullcobra The first that came was a normal farm scythe with a normal blade
@Shirokuma it wasn't though. No where is it confirmed to be a farmer's scythe.
And I just re-learned that Scarlett doesn't know what skill(s) affect the scythe but that one does so we have an explanation regarding why the scythe works in-world since we know that skills have priority over the laws of physics jemini.
@Tunefullcobra That's an explanation for why she's able to use a scythe. Not for why it's slashing things in half when hit with a part that is not the blade or why it's supposedly more durable than a bardiche.
As for why I keep responding, I don't know, half of it is because some people are directing questions at me and I would like to answer them. The other half is just me falling for trolls baiting me, which is something I need to work on.
As you can likely see, I have shifted the tenor of my arguments and I am purposefully ignoring the one person who most certainly actually is trying to stir something up.
@Jemini while I do agree with you for most of the first paragraph, in regards to durability my current theory is that skills affect weapon durability. Also the adamantite is the most durable metal we know of and the entire scythe is made of that with orichalcum inlay for the enchantment. So durability isn't something we really need to think about too hard.
Wierd that you wrote the other stuff considering you claim you don't know why you keep responding. Maybe you just care too much about world building and making sure things work. Enough that you can't accept that something works even though others would successfully argue it does.
Edit: one thing I just realized none of us have commented about is if the blade is single edged then which direction does the edge point? And is the blade curved or straight?
@Tunefullcobra I think it is curved, because if it is straight it would be a spear and if it is curved inward it would be a naginata or axe
@Shirokuma the blade goes out perpendicular to the shaft...
@Tunefullcobra The bardiche was also made of adamantite, but it was destroyed by using it on these guys. So, if they are both made of the same material, we can compare their non-adamantite analogues for accurate testing. If we take this standard, she also had skills to use the bardiche. Therefore, comparing like to like, there is nothing that should be making the scythe more durable than the bardiche.
As for the edges, it was called a scythe. Scythes are single-edged farming tools with the blade on the inside. The version the grim reaper uses is also a farming scythe. The version popularly portrayed in video games and anime has reinforcements to the point where the blade meets the shaft compared to the farming version and also changes the blade's alignment to be perfectly perpendicular to the shaft Vs. the farming version (which has the blade slightly detached and at an off angle to the shaft,) but it's edge is still facing inward toward the wielder.
These are all the standard points. Since the author said it's a scythe, we can reasonably assume that it has all the standard features I just listed off unless the author says otherwise.
@Jemini hahahaha it's still going hahaha
@Jemini there was never any statement that the bardiche relied on a skill, and we don't know what skill affects the scythe, they could be completely different skills, so we can't compare apples to apples, though I do agree that the bardiche most likely was, but which skill and how many is the question for both weapons. And the edge being away from the user does make more sense when using the scythe as a weapon so we can't rule out the possibility since the titan is apparently a very good blacksmith, so even if the scythe is originally a farmer's tool as he is a good blacksmith he should understand the saying "towards your chum not your thumb" that we today use for our blades, even if it's not vocalized the same way. Not forgetting the possibility of a straight double edged blade which coincides with the idea that the scythe is good for piercing and would thus be truly perpendicular to the shaft, coinciding with what is written in this chapter.
Basically at this point we're both just trying to make assumptions that work with our view. Probably neither of us is correct. Maybe both of us are correct. We have no way of knowing short of bugging ninetailed_furbal.
@Crazedpanda1987 I know right. He just won't give up LMAO
Holy crap this is comment 115😅 we've almost made your estimate crazed
@Tunefullcobra You also won't give up, why is that? If you can tell me why you won't give up, I think we might just have the same answer.
Anyway, as for the argument on skills, it is far more reasonable to assume she had a skill to use a bardiche than it is to assume that skills increase weapon durability. It was set up that she gained all kinds of weapon use skills, and it is unreasonable to assume she would make the first weapon she ever wields be one she doesn't have a skill to use. There are all kinds of logical inferences we can make to support her having a weapon skill for it.
@Jemini I'm not saying there's no weapon skills related to either weapon, and in fact I did say that i agree she most likely did have at least one related to the bardiche, so I do agree that it's easier to assume she had a skill for it than skills altering weapon durability.
I don't give up because I'm finding entertainment in this little argument. As I've already started.
@Jemini i agree that there should be an in-lore reason that she can do these things, but i also think we should cut firball some slack when it comes to there writing since they have been strugling a bit when it comes to these detailed fights. they had also said that they're gonna be working to better describe these scenes in the future.
@ShadeByTheSea yeah, i agree that the smith made a mistake, but perhaps some sort of technique was passed down through the titans kind of like how katanas were made extremely sharp and durable irl. and the titans also have a special culture of there own that may have lead him to reason that other races would like a scythe, kind of like how dark elves (i know that's not what they're called, i just can't remember how to spell there real name) asume that everyone should wear revealing clothing to improve mobility. i dont know, it's just fun to try and think about what's behind the scenes.
@Jemini Technically a scythe is not for piercing but for cutting. Scythes were originally used as tools for harvesting. When you enlarge a scythe to the size of a practical weapon(like a grim reaper scythe) it becomes impractical to use for cutting and thus is used for piercing. In a case where the user has incredible strength(and other physical capabilities to some extent), it becomes more practical to uses it for cutting as well.
I agree that a scythe is not the most practical choice of weapon but I disagree that a tool used for "reaping" can't be used to slash/cutting. It just can't be used to slash in the same way as a sword(or most slashing weapons).
@Jemini @Tunefullcobra guys can you stop? It's already beyong being pointless. Opinions were stated 11 days ago. Author read them. Now it's look like bickering of small kids, who are adamant on their opinion and want to have last word. There is no discussion here.
@DR This has been EXACTLY my point the entire time. The way the weapon was described as moving in these scenes is not a manner that would produce a cut.
It's not the idea of the scythe being capable of cutting, it's the fact that not once in the description of the fight was it actually described as moving in a manner that would have produced a cut. Some other people seemed to have (probably deliberately) misinterpreted this.
@Indream I agree it's pointless, it has been since the start, but at this point I'm getting too much petty and probably childish enjoyment out of this to stop.
And jemini it specifically says
the first monster was cut into two
how in the hell do you interpret this as the scythe not being described as cutting.
Edit:
There was a mighty scream as adamantium tore and shred, my scythe was buried all the way to the shaft right through my foe's shield
while this passage doesn't use the word "cut" or any direct variation of such, this passage does describe her cutting through the shield of the shield bearer monster. Now considering there is no usage of cut or any such direct variation I can understand your confusion regarding this exact sentence, but Scarlett did use her scythe to cut the adamantite. She damaged the scythe blade which also got bent rather badly thanks to this, but she still cut with it.
@DragonBound16 I could see that, would make an interesting backstory. Like if modified scythes were an traditional weapon of vampires or something.
I also want to put out that none of us really want to complain about Ninetailed_Furball's writing. We're just arguing over the weapon till the next chapter comes out and scythes are an easy but cool target to argue about.
@Tunefullcobra How did you miss-read my comment that badly? I am saying the chapter described a move that should not result in a cut, but a cut happened anyway. That's exactly the issue. Would you expect a knife to cut something if you stabbed something with the tip of it? No, you would expect the knife to pierce it.
Yes, knives are designed to cut, but the tip of the knife pierces things.
@Jemini "The way the weapon was described as moving in these scenes is not a manner that would produce a cut" this is what you wrote. You never specified what scenes so I could only assume you meant the scenes in this chapter which is where I took my quotes from. And then you say the chapter described a move that should not result in a cut, but in the paragraph I took my second quote from said chapter does exactly that, so no I did not miss-read anything.
And your example with the knife does not work in this scenario because the scythe has its blade perpendicular to the shaft whilst a knife blade edge will always be parallel to the shaft because of the way it's designed. So the scythe's blade edge follows the tip whilst the knife's tip follows the edge when both are swung respectively.
and as a side note I also have no complaints about ninetailed_furrbal's writing, excluding the odd spelling mistake that furrbal always does a good job fixing.
@Tunefullcobra What are you talking about? Think about what you just said. Please.
If you swing a scythe, it is the same as stabbing with a knife. If you swing a knife, it is the same as pulling a scythe backwards toward you. The passages you quoted describe the scythe swinging. That means it is the same as stabbing with a knife. Think about the blade orientation here. You even just said in your own paragraph that the blade is perpendicular to the shaft. Do you know what perpendicular means? Maybe you should look up a picture of a scythe somewhere.
@Jemini how is swinging a knife the same as pulling a scythe towards the user when one is a mid range weapon whilst the other is a close quarters weapon? Also try thinking about how curved the scythe blade is if you're talking about swinging it, because the curvature of the scythe blade drastically changes how you handle the weapon. Then there's the idea that stabbing with a knife is the same as swinging the scythe. The scythe has more momentum, a larger blade, and usually more weight, assuming no extremely light but highly durable materials.(which should be a reasonable assumption if you think about it)
as for your comment regarding me not knowing that perpendicular means 90degrees from the reference point, I'll ignore it as you obviously don't understand the meaning in this specific context.
So I believe that you need to drastically re-think what you just said, As about 90% of it, if not more, is either incorrect or misinformed.
@Tunefullcobra Should be obvious I was talking about slashing Vs. piercing. You are definitely doing this on purpose. Troll status confirmed, and will henceforth be treating you as such.
@Jemini didn't you already confirm me as such?
And yes that is obvious, but that doesn't mean your example works just because the reason you created that failed example is obvious.
and of course I'm doing this on purpose how else would I do this? I'm not commenting by accident.
@Tunefullcobra BY THE SUN!!! IT'S STILL GOING
@Crazedpanda1987
Your profile pic makes me think it would be funnier to say:
BY THE EMPEROR!!!
Ahhh, Warhammer: Space Marines....good times.
Also, it seems to have finally stopped.
@IllOmened Killzone not Warhammer but yeah I do wanna say so....... Yeah they've stopped (y'all ganging up on me Huh)
@Jemini Quick! Comment one more time so that you can have the last laugh!
@DragonBound16 ROFLMAO suuuuuuure suuure sure
Search "Igorot head hunting axe" that is what the auther was describing
@Nibbashamble what are the chances that I'm writing math tomorrow and this thread is still growing
@Crazedpanda1987 nah I'll leave it at that
@Crazedpanda1987 surprisingly high considering most who were involved in this chat probably thought it dead a year ago(myself included)
@Jemini didn't it have an axe head on the back.
