Huo Ye, who has strived for a good life, is robbed of it the second he achieves it. After transmigrating to a new world of cultivation, he has to deal with his goal of living a good life yet again. The world is unforgiving as it seems to go against him by joining his fate to a man who comes along with his own share of trouble. Espionage, betrayals, hidden schemes and quite a bit of murder is the norm for his new partner. The struggling Huo Ye has no clear goal, but is less than willing to go on a crazy adventure which may just have him lose the precious life he’s just obtained. As Huo Ye fights to not lose himself, he also has to defend against the changes this stranger is bringing into his new life.
As far as xianxia and cultivation stories go, this one is a hidden gem. Although it does not have a whole lot of chapters yet, it shows great promise with the chapters that exist so far. The world-building is nice, and it feels like the author has done a fair amount of research and thinking on how to put things together, interweaving the more historical aspects with the more fantastical elements. The protagonist, the unwilling transmigrator Huo Ye, seems quite pragmatic to my eyes, which is a plus. I also found it interesting to follow him as he adapts to his new circumstances, and how the people around him adapt to him (or rather,
to the suddenly changed personality of the person whose body he now inhabits).
