Nabeshima Shiori, age 14! A third-year middle school student from Yakushima, who attends school at Fujisaki Junior and Senior High School in Kagoshima City! Lately, she’s become interested in the magical girls, and absolutely adores them, wishing that she could be one herself.

As Cibele might say, careful what you wish for.

Publicly, Shiori is claimed as a genius of the rainy island of Yakushima, talked of kindly by the adults around her and a vessel for the hopes and dreams of previous generations in the post-Collapse era. The reality is not quite so rosy; Shiori is isolated from her peers, continually having trouble with her schoolwork, and talked about behind her back by students and adults alike.

A certain incident causes Shiori to gain magical power…but this power is recognized by other magical girls as that if the space monsters (uchuu kaiju, or kaiju for short); thus, Shiori is more or less forced to battle them! And her powers have a strange tinge to them, too.

…who knows, though…

The Soaring Star, the Priestess of Wishes, the Dream-clad Monarch, Astral Queen Maledicta

When Shiori opens her heart to the secret self and transforms, she becomes the tentacle-clad dark magical girl, Astral Queen Maledicta! The so-called ‘leaderess of the forces of evil’, the unusual appearance of Maledicta betrays to even ordinary humans that her nature is more like a kaiju than her fellow magical girls.

(The, um, exuberant manner of her debut does not help.)

Said to be prophesised by the Princess Pure, Maledicta is a threat to all of humanity! In theory. In practice, maybe she’s not so bad? Even if she looks like some kind of tentacled monster from the deepest depths of the ocean polluted by humanity’s hubris?

Just watch out for your chastity.

Costume: Tentacles

Maledicta’s costume resembles a one-piece swimsuit with long, scaled gloves at its base level…however, this is merely a small component of her true costume, made entirely up of tentacled growths lined with pseudopods and eyes that continually writhe and grow from her cursed womb. Maledicta’s body is filled with them, brain lined with eyes, her skin pale and slimy. Though she looks human at a distance, a closer inspection will reveal that resemblance to be merely visual; the unsettling nature of her abyssal tentacles would inspire either profound awe or horror in any ordinary human. (The fact that they writhe and change color doesn’t help.)

Maledicta’s tentacles are themselves a kind of weapon and capable of somewhat deforming into appropriate battle implements, but the combat ability of Maledicta is currently low against magical girls. They are, however, fantastic for bondage and sexual stimulation! Just ask Santa Aurea.

Because of the tentacles and eyes, Maledicta has – in theory – 360 degree vision and the ability to react to attacks from any direction. In practice, not only do the extra eyes have much lower acuity and color vision than Maledicta’s main pair, Maledicta’s easily distracted nature reduces the effectiveness further.

Well, nobody’s perfect, right?

Weapon: Tentacle Ink

The ink of Maledicta’s tentacles is made up of the same base substance as the kaiju, in its purest and most corrupt form. It makes a potent weapon against kaiju and kaijin alike, able to pierce past their Phase Contrast Barrier and break up their base form into black carbon.

Its effects on magical girls are somewhat weaker in terms of raw battle ability, but its true purpose may be for something other than battle…maybe Shiori should try feeding it to a girl and find out?

Either way, for Maledicta, the very act of inking from her tentacles is an immense pleasure that is impossible for her to resist for long. Even when untransformed, Shiori occasionally leaks ink from within her womb out of sheer sexual desire and arousal.

Thankfully, though Maledicta’s battle ability against magical girls is currently quite low, her ink, which can become an aerosol smokescreen, makes it quite easy for her to escape combat by detransforming and running away without the magical girls seeing her human form.

Unlocked Powers

Maledicta is blessed by the existence of beings beyond this world, who echo with the stars themselves and haunt her very dreams. The full list of powers can be found in the ‘Shiori’s Powers and Vestiges’ appendix; the following are those she has unlocked within herself, in chronological order of appearance.

The Source 1★: Dark Energy

Shiori’s costume and weapon are made of the same base substance as the kaiju, a dark fluid that gleams in blackness. Shiori can generate it from her body at will, and manipulate it to some extent, giving her a basic level of protection and combat ability, including manifestation of her weapon.

Unfortunately, this ability comes with a great drawback: because Shiori’s magical form is, essentially, a kaiju, it forever marks her as an enemy of all magical girls. Only the terribly foolish or the truly depraved would choose parley with such a creature.

Lord of Cinder 1★: Captivation

No matter what, Shiori’s presence will remain in memory. Any magical girl or human who witnesses her in her transformed state or comes in contact with her dark fluid has a lasting impression of Shiori, positive or negative.

Daughter of the Cosmos 1★: Aquabatics

Shiori’s physical prowess, even when untransformed, increases dramatically. Gymnastics, acrobatics, martial arts, all such things are far simpler for her, and continue to become easier and easier with increased Daughter of the Cosmos rank.

In addition, Shiori can skim the surface of the water like a ship, or swim beneath the ocean waves with inhuman talent. She can, additionally, hold her breath for an inhumanly long time without ill effects, and resist extremes of pressure.

Shiori’s Power

Shiori gains her power when she’s eaten by a kaiju attacking her ferry home – a non-lethal but nevertheless very distressing situation that normally results in no lasting damage (besides property damage). Left with hazy memories from somewhere beyond the time and a sense of seeking greater purpose, Shiori soon learns that she’s achieved the power of a magical girl!

…but she looks like that?!

Though the power might look…unconventional…Shiori has no reason to believe it’s evil. Unfortunately, trying to face kaijin alongside her beloved magical girls quickly reveals that her power pings as a kaijin to them, and most of them will treat her as their long-awaited enemy – the leaderess of the forces of evil! (This might be a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy on the part of Asuka, plot-wise.)

It’s up to Shiori to decide how to use her new power! For good, for evil, for…lewd?! Who knows, really…

Vestiges

The power Shiori now wields isn’t simply an inert mass of magic – it has a mind of its own. Several, in fact!

Pursuing the various Likes of Shiori’s Vestiges helps awaken their power and influence within her. While you aren’t penalized for indulging in any of the Vestiges’ Dislikes, avoiding them in certain situations or preventing others from indulging in them can also awaken power.

Vestige powers are rated by stars, from 1★ to 5★; some abilities are unlocked faster than others. Thoroughly mantling a Vestige once it’s reached 5★ unlocks abilities from 6★ to 10★, but a truly momentous event would be needed for that to occur…

Shiori starts with 1★ in The Source, and no other Vestige powers.

The granted powers are only guidelines as to the power that can be gained through Shiori’s magic; Shiori may utilize her ingenuity or her Vestige ranks, including in combination, to achieve greater feats.

To put it more simply: Speculation on potential combo powers is actively encouraged! This includes the abilities of other magical girls!

The dark fluid that fills the spaces between the stars, the love that pulses between them. The original source of the kaiju and the corruption inside Shiori.

Time and space itself is a Mobius loop, that pulses to the Source’s rhythm. Perhaps the Source’s approval of Shiori’s dark soul is what awakened her potential where others felt nothing.

Shiori gains the ability to store seemingly limitless amounts of inert substance inside herself. This substance has no weight and can’t be detected without the use of magic, though storing electronics inside herself will still allow for reception.

To store living creatures or other magical girls inside her, Shiori requires to coat them entirely in dark fluid – a seemingly impossible feat now, but perhaps better accomplished with other Vestige abilities.

Also, as the long-awaited leaderess of the forces of evil, Shiori has the power to teleport away from confrontations with the heroines, back to some secret base or sanctum. Actually doing so means leaving behind the magical girls, though… not to mention leaving any kaiju or kaijin allies to their doom.

3★: A Mind Full Of Questions

Shiori’s technological knowledge expands beyond human limits. Through study and contemplation, she can enact miracles of science; she can also research the nature of magic and mix it with her understanding of scientific laws. This ability scales with all Vestiges, not just The Source; eventually, magic is science and science is magic…

4★: Long Live the New Flesh

Shiori’s dark fluid can be used to perform painless surgeries upon humans and magical girls alike, even while conscious. If she wishes to make use of prosthetics, they can be installed without fear of rejection.

5★: Time Alter

Shiori becomes able to alter the flow of time. While not able to travel through time, she can slow, stop, or even speed up time as needed. In addition, she can do this in localized areas involving her dark fluid. Magical girls are capable of resisting or breaking through such an effect, however.

A forgotten would-be magical girl whose world was destroyed in light. Seeks the salvation of all things – beneath her, of course.

A believer in justice might have unconventional methods to reach that justice. In the end, if the only path to salvation is bending others to your will, then pursue it with all your passion and sorrow.

2★: Endothermic

Shiori gains the ability to decrease the temperature of her dark fluid at will. This can cause her dark fluid to become solid for use as a weapon, or freeze materials it comes in contact with. As a final bonus, she can no longer be harmed by low temperatures, unless they form part of a hostile attack; even then, the effects are substantially reduced.

3★: Star of the Show

Shiori’s Charisma grows further. In any battle, Shiori will be the centre of attention – for better or for worse. This applies to the magical girls, who will focus on Shiori more than usual; it will also, however, affect ordinary humans witnessing or hearing the battle. Embrace the universe like a blazing star, Shiori!

This might give Shiori an idea on how to grasp the attention of others…and whisper her will inside their ear.

4★: And so I pray…

Shiori gains a powerful instinctive knowledge of weaponry, from swords to naval cannons. Any weapon, even other magical girls’ weapons, can be utilized by her as if an expert.

5★: Awakening

Shiori’s bind to those she’s claimed as her own rises to great heights, as she gains the ability to boost and alter the power of other magical girls into a greater, grander power than before.

In addition, Shiori can awaken an ordinary human as a magical girl using this power, though her potential to do so is limited by her power in other Vestiges.

Physical bindings applied on or by Shiori gain supernatural power, amplifying the magical power and special abilities of the bound character; but making them more susceptible to pleasurable or corrupting influences.

5★: The First Flame

Shiori’s Captivation grows to immense heights. An inherent sense of Shiori’s divinity, for good or ill, comes from anyone who witnesses her magical girl form. This meme of her divinity may spread Shiori’s other mental influences, regardless of any physical contact, scaling with all her Vestiges.

This fluid manipulation also extends to ordinary water, which can also be conjured in various ways and combined with Aquabatics. The bonus from Aquabatics is also upgraded; Shiori can survive indefinitely in environments entirely without air, and can’t be harmed by extremes of pressure, unless caused by a magical girl’s attack.

4★: Sparkling Aria

Shiori’s voice and song cling to and warp the minds of girls and women who hear it, increasing their opinion of and desire for Shiori.

5★: Black Water

Shiori’s dark fluid is no longer inert when it leaves her own body without form. Instead, it can be separated from her, and remain ever part of her, physically manipulated by her. This black water can be used to coat metals or even fleshy tissues, like the inside of a person or even the creases of their brain. Shiori’s contact and dark fluid related abilities can be used upon the fluid she creates, no matter the distance or what it’s bonded to, and the touch of her dark fluid is like her touch.

One destined to be blessed by the Source, but snuffed out by the cruelty of humanity.

Darkness is not foreign to the human spirit. Within each and every one of us burns desires, base needs that can never be revealed to the world. The world is not so welcoming that we may bare our souls true.

Shiori gains the ability to create pseudo-kaiju parasites from her own body and dark fluid. The most prominent is a phallus, but she can also create tentacles and other biological appendages.

2★: Infection

Shiori’s parasites can now be attached to other girls as well as herself. Getting parasites attached has an addictive effect, though the parasites read as kajiu-like.

3★: Fleshweaving

Shiori can alter the nature and form of her own body using her dark fluid. She may also alter the flesh touched by her dark fluid, or of those she’s marked and claimed. She can’t use this as a direct attack on magical girls without a conduit to work with, though.

4★: Paint it Black

Shiori can alter the density and viscosity of her dark fluid from a thin liquid all the way to a thick solid, with various physical properties. While this is her native ability, this allows her changes a much greater range, and the ability to be used as an offensive attack or a form of bondage in and of itself.

5★: Dirac Sea

Shiori’s body is now capable of melting entirely into dark fluid. Through this, she can melt and flow over other girls, and spread many of her other abilities through the use of her own body…

A self-made empress destined to be blessed by the Source, who fell to eternal despair upon the death of those she loved the most.

A life can be snuffed out and doomed to obscurity forever in a single moment. Woe the tyranny of those who say, ‘we couldn’t have known any better’ to absolve themselves of responsibility.

Shiori is no longer considered an enemy of the kaiju and kaijin; they won’t harm her, though they won’t extend this courtesy to her allies should they attack. They will, however, allow her to use her powers on them, claim, alter or empower them as she pleases.

2★: Cold Reading

Shiori always knows just what to say. This power allows Shiori to read into even the smallest detail of a person, and grants her an insight into exactly what words will have the most impact on them. It also may grant her knowledge of a target’s repressed desires…

3★: Thicker Than Blood

Shiori can alter the nature of a positive feeling or relationship between her and another person, to be more familial in context. Mother, sister, daughter, anything is possible. As an interesting note, kaijin and kaiju seem to show a certain obedience to beings they perceive as their brood mother, and have even been known to cross space to defend or answer the call of such beings, should they be able to hear it…

4★: Acid King

Simply being near Shiori – regardless of whether she’s transformed or not – slowly warps one’s common sense into something more pleasing to Shiori. Generally this effect is strongest on romantic and sexual mores, and what one is physically willing to bear in the pursuit of pleasure.

5★: Reimagining

By imagining a being as something different from what they are, and with the aid of her dark fluid, Shiori can impose that image upon them in reality. This can have physical effects, but is primarily psychological in nature. In particular, it is effective at changing the target’s age (actual or apparent), and their social role. While it can be used on beings not yet claimed by Shiori, its effectiveness is very limited (but can be boosted or reinforced by use of other powers or by altering others’ perception of the target).

In addition, Darklurker's 3★ works between any two people.

While Shiori lives on the island of Yakushima, a small town south of mainland Kyushu, she takes a fast ferry every day to attend school in Kagoshima City!

Kagoshima has changed somewhat since the Collapse and the East Sea War; having recovered from such turbulent times, Kagoshima City now encompasses most of the mainland Kyushu portion of Kagoshima Prefecture due to administrative changes. The city has also become something of a magnet for migrants and refugees, at least relatively speaking, due to rapid shifts in the political zeitgeist and a vastly increased need for outside sources of labour.

With its proximity to the Tanegashima Space Centre and the volcano Sakurajima, Kagoshima is something of a magnet for kaiju attacks; thankfully, Kagoshima has dozens of magical girls to defend it against any threat!

Half celebrity and half emergency worker, Kagoshima City is home to the world's first magical girls. Most magical girls are part of one of several teams that work together to protect Kagoshima from the monstrous threat!

Sante Quintetto

“It’s time to count up all of your sins!”

A rival team to the Swords of Moonlight, the Sante Quintetto (or the ‘Saints’, as some call them) is a five-strong team of magical girls that was only recently formed. Despite only coming onto the scene recently, their popularity has risen to great heights. Their coordination needs work, but each of them has a great deal of raw power.

Santa Rosa

One of the Sante Quintetto, and the most popular among magical girl fans. While not standing out in any one area, her purity of heart and her boundless love are seen as the ideals of a magical girl made manifest.

It’s unclear what Santa Rosa’s precise power is, though it seems like she holds back in battle. This mystery seems to only increase her popularity…

Santa Viola

A stern and mysterious magical girl. Her power is the matter of much speculation; often it seems as if she teleports without warning, or can teleport objects. Recently she’s seen a surge of popularity as she’s begun to show a more ruthless side in battle, as well as a more mature and confident image.

Santa Aurea

The golden beauty of the Sante Quintetto, she’s the public relations of the team and came up with its name and theme. Though her magical firearms aren’t as powerful as one might expect, her true talent is in supporting the talents of her allies, bringing out their potential and pinning down her enemies.

Though a fearsome ability, it can only be used when Santa Aurea is capable of maintaining absolute confidence in her own victory…

Swords of Moonlight

“In the name of the moon, prepare to be purified!”

One of the first magical girl teams to appear in defense of their homeland against the monstrous invasion, these five girls claim to represent the spirit of the gods themselves and are the most popular of the teams in Kagoshima.

The Phantom Renegade

• Birthday: March 27 (♈︎)
• Blood Type: A
• Ability: A Fucking Magical Motorcycle
• Weapon: Rose Whip
• Key Feature: Short, dark blue locks

A semi-independent and mysterious magical girl who wears a tuxedo and a mask, and rides a motorcycle! (Sounds kinda familiar.) One of Shiori’s absolute favorites, because she reminds her of Karasawa-sensei!

The mistress of dramatic entrances and last-minute saves, the Renegade considers herself a wildcard – though, one might question if being fashionably late is the best idea where the kaiju are concerned.

While ostensibly independent, the Phantom Renegade is rarely seen far from the Swords of Moonlight, despite lacking both their theme and an appropriate name. She even lines up with and has merchandising rights with the Swords, so few consider her not part of the group.

Indie Magical Girls

Some magical girls work alone, or in ad-hoc groups depending on the situation. Since groups are more powerful, and are better able to coordinate merchandising and image rights, most of these girls don’t take long before they band together. Those who remain outside generally have image problems or trouble working with a group…

Mater Dolorosa

• Key Feature: Shocking lime green hair

An arrogant magical girl of mysterious origins who has taken an interest in Maledicta, whose power appears to include some control over kaijin (though kaiju seem above her abilities). A self-styled magical artist, her abrasive mannerism has won her a certain niche fandom, but makes her a rather poor team player.

As a result, she’s an independent magical girl less out of desire (though there might be a bit of it) and more out of a complete lack of anyone who wants to work with her.

• Key Feature: Short, dark blue locks

Shiori’s homeroom and history teacher. A stern, but encouraging educator who takes her job seriously, Haruna has a reputation as a workaholic among the staff. Known for both traditional hobbies and her enthusiasm for driving, both her students and her colleagues have high praise for her efforts.

Shiori is nursing a rather obvious and broad crush on ‘Karasawa-sensei’, one she struggles to express. Some might claim it’s the privilege of youth to have an unrequited crush on their teacher, but Shiori might be worryingly serious…

A girl in Shiori’s class who seemingly had a change of heart overnight. Where once she was shy and awkward, she’s become confident and cool; this is quite distressing to Shiori, who thought she was striking up a friendship with Asuka but soon found her turning cold and hostile. And once Shiori gains her power, it gets even worse…

A certain girl who just moved to Fujisaki and transferred to Shiori’s school. Because her old neighborhood was particularly prone to kaiju attacks, she was transferred to Shiori’s school by her parents; for whatever reason, Mie seemed particularly prone to being caught in kaijin-related disasters.

Once a childhood friend of Shiori’s, she fell out of Shiori’s life and seemingly shows little interest in rekindling her friendship with the bizarre otaku that Shiori has become.

• Key Feature: Luxuriously blonde

The captain of Fujisaki’s senior archery team. Well-loved and respected by her classmates, Towa’s traditional beauty and modesty is paired with a rare generosity that makes her popular with just about everyone.

Towa is surrounded by admirers, including Kasumi, but she keeps her feelings close to her chest. What she’s really looking for, though, might be something that Shiori could provide…

• Key Feature: Pink-haired cutie

A pink-haired girl in Shiori’s class. Friendly and bright, she is nevertheless quite distant from Shiori due to a lack of shared hobbies, Shiori living in Yakushima, and Shiori’s general social anxiety.

Kasumi is quite troubled in love, though she keeps her orientation somewhat close to her chest. Maybe she just needs a friend who knows how it feels to be lonely?

• Key Feature: Shocking lime green hair
