Explanation

Honestly, this is just for fun. I'm sure most of you would be able to understand through context what these are but hey, why not add one already within the page. All of them have no spoilers, except for when tagged so be warned.

Also for future reference, all names in the glossary are family name first, then given name second.

Characters
Fukaze Honzo

Fukaze Honzo (不風 本草) is the narrator of the story. He is a member of Class 2B. He suffers from several depersonalization episodes. Honzo's birthday is June 19th. He has an older sister, Fukaze Yumi (不風 由美) and she is currently a graduate student.

Spoiler

When he was younger, he witnesses his cousins and his auntie getting killed in a vehicular incident, involving a truck. As a result, he is afraid of large vehicles, such as buses. He will always take the train/subway.

Nakanami Sayako

Nakanami Sayako, or (中波 彩也子), is a classmate of Honzo in Class 2-B. She is frequently referred by Honzo as being 'mother-like'. Also, she is best friends with Sadayuki Saeka. Unlike many of the characters, she commutes to school via the subway. Sometimes called Saya-chan by Honzo. As well as being a member of the Culture & Travel Club, she is a member in the Swimming Club.

Takanishi Erina (Nishi-chan)

Takanishi Erina (滝西 絵里那), is Fukaze Honzo's neighbour. They live right in front of each other. Honzo almost calls her 'Nishi-chan' rather than Erina. She is considered the 'idol of 2nd year' and is a member of Class C. She grew up with Honzo and they are childhood friends. In fact, they were born on the same day as each other - 19th June.

Satou Kazumi

Satou Kazumi (佐藤 和美), she is a third-year student at Aisaihashi High School. She is childhood friends with Honzo and Erina. Also, she is well-beloved by both staff and student body for her work as student council president, so much that she is left unopposed in the student elections. Despite that working at the student council, she finds time to be a member of the Culture Club. Her birthday is also June 19th, same with Honzo and Nishi-chan.

Ohara Mai

Ohara Mai (小原 麻衣), is a classmate of Honzo in Class 2B. She used to be much closer to Honzo in middle school, but drifted apart until recently, when they've started talking. Honzo describes her as 'pastel goth' or even nicknames such as 'Maipie' and 'Pastel Princess'. In actuality, her style is more closer to Jirai-kei. She was born on 23rd November.

Location
Nagoya, Japan

Nagoya (名古屋市) is an industrial major city, located in Aichi Prefecture, where most of the novel is set in. It is the 3rd largest urban area by population in Japan, at an estimated number of ~10,000,000 inhabitants. Nagoya has been slated as 'Japan's Most Boring City,' a title that isn't particularly fair. As of December 2022, it hosts the 4th largest foreign national population (88,088 nationals) in Japan, according to the Immigration Services Agency. They mostly consist of Vietnamese, Chinese, Koreans, and Filipinos with significant amounts of Indians, Brazilians, and Nepali nationals. Hence why the cover has these flags (alongside Cambodia and the USA). Aichi Prefecture has the 2nd largest foreign nationals in Japan at prefecture-level, only below Tokyo.

Takabata, Nagoya

Majority of the novel is set in and around Takabata, Nagoya. As of January 1st 2019, 5,501 people live in the area. It's known for being host to a terminus of the Higashiyama-line (H01, Takabata/高畑駅). It's also where the administrative building for Nakagawa Ward is located, and as such is somewhat busy. Aisaihashi High School, a public high school (fictional), is a 20 minute walk and is the school that most of the characters go to.

高畑駅

Above is the Takabata Station.

Takabata is not far away from the city centre to be considered a fully fledged suburb, but it's certainly much quieter than 'inner Nagoya.'

Aisaihashi High School
A fictional high school in Nakagawa-ward. It is publicly funded, but is considered to have a high reputation, and as such many, if not a majority of the students are not from the nearby area. Currently undergoing a refurbishment. Around 800 students go to this school.
Miscellaneous
Danchi (団地)

Danchi (団地) is a term for mostly public/social housing apartment complexes. In the UK, the equivalent term is a 'council estate', whilst US is 'public housing project', France 'banlieue', etc. It's used several times throughout the novel due to several characters living in them.

宝生神社

Above is Hoshocho-danchi (宝生団地). It is located in Midori-ward.

The Culture & Travel Club (文化旅行部)

The Culture & Travel Club is a new school club created by Iijima Aya, a third-year student who is good friends with Satou Kazumi and invites Honzo, Sayako, and Yusuke to the club. It's all about learning about other cultures, discussing travel, and helping out in the community. It's located in Block D, the newest building of Aisaihashi High School.
