Is a transgender man, but dresses androgynously in fully men's wardrobe one day and full in femme the next. On stage, he dresses as a girl, which used to be common in the visual kei world when he was in it. Originally from Hawaii, he is Japanese-American. Moved to Osaka, where he met many of the founding Lyra members.

Talents: Onnagata performer, traditional dancer with a focus on nihon-buyo, modern dancer, traditional Japanese singer with a focus on "long song". Jazz performer, drag artist. 

Roles: Boyfriend of Sana. Has had a long and fruitful career as a traditional Japanese performer and jazz performer. Is enough of a celebrity to appear in national magazines and on TV. Took a hiatus from performing in order to take care of Sana. Identifies as non-binary, but is in the closet except to Sana. His professional name is Aurelia, which refers to a moon jellyfish. Originally from Kanagawa prefecture, he moved to Tokyo for his career.

Talents: Drummer for Lyra.

Roles: Yami is the co-founder of Lyra. He does not like Tetsu and thinks he won't be able to care for Sana correctly, therefore he has been outcasted from Lyra. He is Sana's best friend. His performing and preferred name is Yami, but his legal name is Yuuhi Sawai. Originally from Osaka, but now resides in Tokyo.

Age: 37

Talents: Metal guitarist, violist

Roles: Was the original guitarist of Lyra upon formation. Has returned as their violist and main guitarist. She is a transgender woman, and is deeply bonded with Sana for him helping her with this. Will defend Sana to the death if given half the chance. Is the girlfriend of Hikaru, who is many years her junior. Originally from Okinawa, but now resides in Tokyo.

Talents: Jazz guitarist, co-writer of songs for Lyra

Roles: Became the guitarist of Lyra after Shizue left early on in their career. Bonded with Sana over music creation, chanson, and jazz. Does not like Yami, is Yami's enemy #1. Has a bold personality and is the prankster of the band. Originally from Osaka, but now resides in Tokyo.

Talents: Metal bassist, double bass

Roles: Third and permanent bassist of Lyra. Had big shoes to fill and still feels uncertain he is filling them. Originally from Sendai. Nerdy and quiet, loves Gundam. When he speaks, all of Lyra listens. Is considered much smarter than everyone else in Lyra, due to his day job as an IT professional. Professional name is Masaki.

Talents: Violinist

Roles: Was the violinist in Mermaid Orchestra, Tetsu's band. Is Tetsu's kouhai, and follows him around like a duckling since Tetsu is his idol. Starts dating Shizue at the beginning of the serial. Is often described as spineless and "too young to understand", but he is also misjudged. Originally from Tokyo. 

Age: 46

Talents: Metal singer, pianist

Roles: Part of the very famous visual kei band Yellow Lizard. He is Tetsu's senpai and mentor from a long time ago, still his best friend. His professional name is Keitaro, but his legal name is Kentaro Eguchi. Has a wife named Karin and a young son named Shuya. Lives in Shibuya in Tokyo. He is originally from a small seaside town a little north of Sendai.  

Age: Late 40's

Talents: Endocrinologist

Roles: Is Sana's long time doctor. She has been treating him since his early 20's. She is very involved with Sana's life, and by extension becomes Tetsu's lifeline. Works at a hospital in Tokyo.

Age: Early 60's

Talents: Accountant, Tetsu's dad

Roles: Is Tetsu's dad. Is often stoic and stern, but is evolving to understand Tetsu and his relationship with Sana. Is often referred to as "Hirano-san" in public. He is often not home. Loves baseball. He is very much part of the older generation and holds traditional values. 

Age: early 60's

Talents: Homemaker, hobby gardener, retired nurse, Tetsu's mom

Roles: Is Tetsu's mom. Almost never referred to as Hirano-san, mostly is referred to as Tetsu's mom in the story as a kind of name. It isn't polite for younger characters to use her first name. Loves to garden and cook. Is often wearing a plain kimono and traditional apron. Was a nurse for a long time, but is now retired. Very kind hearted and warm. Has traditional values as someone from the older generation, but is much more liberal than anyone expects. Loves the traditional Japanese arts such as kabuki and noh theater.

Talents: Homemaker

Roles: Is Tetsu's younger sister. She is the twin of Naoko. Bold and loud mouthed, often careless. Married to Haru. Has no children. She is much closer to Tetsu than Naoko, who is too busy for most things. She is an example of a feminist in an often traditional society, actively rejecting traditional female roles such as being a mother.

Talents: Librarian, mother

Roles: Works in Yokohama in a library. Has two sons, Shinji and Aki. Is married to Daichi. Much quieter and easier to scare than her bold twin sister, Natsuko. Is happy in her daily roles, loving to take care of her little family. Due to her responsibilities, she is often away from her parents' home and therefore doesn't see Tetsu and Sana much, though she cares for them deeply.

Talents: Pediatrician

Roles: Is the husband of Natsuko. He is often soft-spoken and professional. He lets Natsuko do the talking. He is often called upon when the family needs answers or (better, more medical) advice about Sana. He works a lot, which allows Natsuko tons of freedom.

Talents: Police officer

Roles: Works in Yokohama. He is almost never home, as he often stays in Yokohama for work. He is mentioned a lot, but almost never seen. He is the husband of Naoko, and father of Shinji and Aki. 

Based on a real town in Japan. The name is never mentioned, and only referred to as Tetsu's hometown. If you find the mentioned places within and around it on a map, you can pretty much pinpoint it. I don't mention the name in order to give myself more artistic freedom, but I definitely have a specific town in mind. It is by the ocean, south of Yokohama, an hour south of Tokyo. Enoshima is very close. It is within Kanagawa prefecture. The majority of the story takes place here.
