This is a side story to A Mage in the Savage Lands, as that book was getting too long in my opinion, so some chapters just got deleted, and this... more>> subplot got turned into its own short story. It takes place during the second book of the Nath’aniel series so you do not need to have already read that to read this, but it is strongly suggested that you have already read the 1st book in the series, A Mage in Marvel, to understand what has already happened.

Gore is ticked, because my writing takes a more realistic take on what super humans would be like in our world. Strong Language is ticked, because there is some swearing in my writing. And Sexual Content is tick, because a pair of chapters are somewhat edgy, but there is no Erotica in this short story.

Each chapter will between 2300 and 2800 words, while the single Interlude in this book will be shorter (about 1400 words). Unlike the regular entries in the series, this book will not have a prologue (to foreshadow a future event in the story) or an epilogue (to foreshadow the next installment).

Not alone, however. His family leave him with a roommate, Mark, an apparently normal human around his own age. But appearances are especially deceptive in this case.

Christian builds a reputation, first around the New Age bookshop where he works, then beyond that, as someone to turn to when things go bump in the night. Whether it's lingering negative energy, a lost ghost, or a dangerous infestation, he'll solve it. Sometimes, that's with the help of a powerful, sensual, and often bloodthirsty lamia who is still perplexed about how she has come to genuinely care about a human.

Throw in a group of witches called the Fellowship, who are firmly convinced that all witches should come under their authority and above all else stay below the radar; a subgroup within the Fellowship who feel that the ends for the greater good justify any means; a few supernatural threats; a friend from another independent witch family, who has a very close past history with a kitsune who says less than she does; Christian’s Dungeons and Dragons gamer group; a young black cat in dire need of a home; a colony of feral cats inherited from his great-aunt; and a couple of non-witch friends, and life gets complicated in a hurry.

Two characters in this are significantly transgender, in different ways, and orientation is mostly not a consideration. Oh, and it's set in 1998, which was when the very first, very rough draft was written.

** Trigger warnings **
This one does have more explicit sex and violence than my usual, and that's primarily all about the titular lamia herself. It's going to be difficult to be comprehensive without spoilers, but feel free to ask if you have questions, I completely understand. Broad strokes: lamias are a form of energy vampire/succubus (sort of) and actively hunt men to feed, usually without killing but also without consent - if you're okay with the typical vampire/succubus morality this should be okay. (Consent is different with humans she knows!) Lamias tend to have a very direct and physical approach to removing obstacles and annoyances; most of the violence is towards aggressive supernatural creatures (one scene came out particularly gory), but not all of it. One minor character who appears briefly late in the story endured some abuse that ends at that point. There's no harm done to children or animals with the single exception of a cat hunting a mouse. Please be careful with this one if you're prone to triggers!

Her Xenogenisis series mostly, where aliens came to earth to make human hybrid babies because they wanted cancer, only without all the weird consent issues she loves.

This will be mostly me working my way through interesting ideas without much of anything in the way of story arcs or core conflicts other than what feels interesting within the fiction at the time. When doing tabletop RPG stuff I'm a very 'fly by the seat of your pants' GM so this is that blasted into writing.

Jesse’s been having a tough time at home with his adopted parents, and even life on the streets, with the one friend he trusts, has more appeal. During a particularly bad moment, he finds himself some way north of the city he lives in, and things just keep getting stranger from there: Haven, the village he stumbles over, is not only primarily pagan, but a substantial percentage of the population can do insane things. Like manipulating light into doorways linking places, or fixing injuries with a touch, or changing into wolves.

The early part of his life has been a blank to him as long as he can remember, but the more time he spends in Haven, the more hints there are that a place like this is where he belongs. But how did he come to be alone several years before, with no memory? Is there unfinished business lurking in his past that can come back to haunt him in his new life? And how much danger are his Haven friends in because of him?

Very much an Ugly Duckling tale. Only with fewer ducks. ;)

This was my first finished novel. Comfort playing with gender and experimenting with other diversity came later. There *are* intimate poly relationships and a sort of non-exclusive MM friendship-with-benefits. V0.01 of Black Wolf was written during the mid-1990's, while I was in my late teens/early 20s. While it has undergone three or four major overhauls since then, updating it to take place later proved not to be a viable option. I realize some readers may find concepts like the absence of cell phones and Internet rather alien.

** Content warnings: minimal gore/violence (largely wolves fighting bad things), occasional bad language, the only sex is a non-explicit masturbation scene. The MC does start off homeless and there are a couple of mild scenes around this. Many gods create spirit attendants and companions, brought forth fully-formed. Long ago, the moons worked together to create a lineage that are, instead, humans transformed by the mingling of blood.

They intended them to be long-lived and to draw their strength directly from the light of the moon who chose each individual. The five sisters had different goals in mind – one wanted it to be a blessing for scholars and artists, to give them more time and fewer physical distractions; another wanted them to have an animal form, different for each, to keep them more in tune with nature so they could serve as guardians of the wilderness.

There are drawbacks to their children having human lives and personalities before being chosen: not all share the goals of their divine mothers, and some choose to put their gifts to darker uses.

A few carry the blood of one woman who fled the corruption in search of a quiet life. Some joined the family by choice, some by accident; they come from highly varied backgrounds, and have diverse skills. Looking out for each other, unable to settle anywhere for long, they try to help humans when they can. Ultimately, there is no greater threat for them to tackle than the other children of the moons.

Moonblood isn't so much a novel as a series of adventures of varying length. They involve a core group of people, which does grow over time. They take place in a low-magic world, but despite that, our core cast are directly connected to the moons and have various abilities, including limited shapeshifting to a single individual animal form.

As with all my work, unless gender, orientation, or other aspects of sexuality are explicitly stated, I suggest not making assumptions. Probably most significant, I think, is a major trans character who appears about 80K words in - no spoilers, just a note for those who care about that one way or the other. <<less

Generations ago, human explorers found a continent inhabited by an utterly alien culture of shapeshifting weyres and the shyani, humanoids who prefer dusk and dawn. A truce of sorts was eventually reached: humans claimed the rich lowlands, and the shyani and weyres retain the highlands. Along the border, practicality often rules, but on either side, old grudges linger in some hearts.

As a student physician, Corin tried to take his own life, unable to bear the countless tiny wounds inflicted over twenty-one years of lying to himself in order to be, or pretend to be, socially acceptable. At the last improbable instant, intervention came, in the form of a spirit fox, who led him away from the existence he’d known in the lowlands and into the highlands. There, a puma weyre rescued him, and a shyani shaman helped him find his true self and offered a rebirth, a life with no more lies, and an important role to fill.

Now a shaman and healer in her own right, Vixen who was once Corin learns that the one human who mattered to her in her previous life, then a fellow University student, has come into possession of an old shyani book, and the more fanatical shyani and weyres will stop at nothing to reclaim it and punish Jared. Even though it means going back into the lowlands and facing Jared as a woman, she can’t bear to just look the other way. This should be a short visit, just long enough to see the book into the proper hands and make sure Jared will not be killed for having it, and then she can return to the shyani community that has accepted her as their shaman. And, of course, her feline best friend Dayr insists on coming with her.

But Jared is now a Lord, with considerable wealth and power, and his response to her presence isn’t one she expected. After years living with the shyani, she sees everything around her from a new perspective, and that makes it difficult to keep to the plan of making as few waves as possible. As an honoured guest in a highborn house, with only Jared aware that she has ever been anyone else, Vixen finds herself questioning where she belongs: with Dayr and the shyani, who accept her gender without question but have to make allowances for her differences, or with humans, in the culture she grew up in even though her past would mean a major scandal?
