Prelude:

A twi'lek orphan girl in a slum on Ryloth was about to give up hope; she was hungry and sick, beaten from a fight with a bunch of other orphan kids, for the scraps of food they could find in the trash piles. She was sitting on the side of a dark alleyway, enduring the pain of hunger to lessen her hunger and thirst she drunk water from a dirty puddle, yesterday. Now she had a fever. She knew that it was a risk, but she had no other choice... Now it will be over at least faster, she thought with sadness, but also relief. With her hazy mind, she finally realized that someone was standing before her, a tall man, a human man? She couldn't make out his features. At least she will not be alone in her last moments, suddenly she felt happy, it was probably from the hunger, she felt light-headed, her reasoning was gone. Her heavy eyelids slowly closed.

The stranger was looking at the small probably five or six year old girl. He looked at the girl, but there was no pity in his aging eyes. Only realization.

- So be it. He said.

The force made him come to this place. It led him into this alley at the right time to save this light gray-skinned twi'lek girl. She was a bastard child of a whore, most likely dropped on the streets, or orphaned in some other typically cruel way. It did not matter to the bearded man. What mattered was that he could sense the force in the girl. He knew that she was the one he came for. He picked up the girl, and walked back to his ship, hastily.

- Don't die on me now, after all that trouble to find you. The man cursed while breathing heavily. He was old, his beard was entirely white. The spring in his steps and deep wrinkles were tell-tale signs of a battle-hardened veteran. Or at least a hard life, with heavy physical labor.

The man ran up the ramp of his ship, into its medical room. Carefully placing the trembling, feverish girl on the table while two different medical droids booted in and started to scan the girl's body. When doing tabletop RPG stuff I'm a very 'fly by the seat of your pants' GM so this is that blasted into writing.

This is my own original work, with obvious inspirations from the likes of Gundam, Dune, 1984, Evangellion, Grimgar and anime in general.

A fair amount of research has gone into many of the topics in this book, but I am by no means an expert in any.

I'd love to share some of the research I've come across on mecha, living in Space, and amputees. Amputees in particular is a worthy topic we should all be more educated on - You may find this video link a brief intro into that world; https://youtu.be/piiFI8QafHs

There is a degree of deconstructionism towards the mecha genre involved with an onus on taking a more practical look at the features of that mode of storytelling, giving actually worldbuilding explanations for some of the fantastical equipment involved and using the likes of military structure and resource management in conjunction with the story, but hopefully this is something anyone can enjoy with no prior knowledge of the genre traditions.

A protagonist that uses their mind? Absolutely not! I mean, they aren't even a living being, technically, and they certainly aren't biological in origin.

While this story is tagged as a gender bender, the protagonist is non-binary/gender fluid. What this means is that the pronoun usage is irrelevant in terms of telling the actual story. The pronoun choices made are simply a reflection of the isolated main character's perception of self based on its own understanding of the world, just as the individual inside Plato's cave, would have no understanding of being male or female.
This short story was also inspired by the Chinese novel "Journey to the West" (also known by the titles "Monkey" and "The Monkey King") credited as being written by Wu Cheng'en. <<less

Some people, on the other hand, rise to the occasion and do everything in their power to reach freedom. Among these types of individuals, there is Akir, a psychologically tormented young man with an unusual history. After he is transported into a mysterious construct called the Ruins, he starts a ruthless journey towards true freedom, which he believes will bring him happiness.

Things don't go according to plan, though, as the trials he is put through start making him question his morality and the opinions he lives by. Eventually, his identity comes into question, and he starts to lose himself, his life goals threatening to fade into nothingness.
