There was something...different about the grandfather, more specifically his occupation - despite living in the middle of nowhere with nothing of import within miles, he somehow had some incredibly confidential job that neither Thomas nor Ellie knew anything about.

Until shortly after Ellie's eighteenth birthday, that is. The grandfather took them to a fantastic world known as The Outlands, where he revealed that he was the head of the Freelancer's Guild, and made preparations to show the two the ropes of freelancing.

But...when their stats were measured, things took yet another turn. In a monumental coincidence, it turned out that Ellie had the best stat growths possible, immediately marking her for stardom, while Thomas had the worst possible. Such misfortune would usually mean that he was wholly unsuitable for the business, but...the Goddess of Fortune had seen his bad luck and took pity on him, granting him her strongest blessing.

Many gods create spirit attendants and companions, brought forth fully-formed. Long ago, the moons worked together to create a lineage that are, instead, humans transformed by the mingling of blood.

They intended them to be long-lived and to draw their strength directly from the light of the moon who chose each individual. The five sisters had different goals in mind – one wanted it to be a blessing for scholars and artists, to give them more time and fewer physical distractions; another wanted them to have an animal form, different for each, to keep them more in tune with nature so they could serve as guardians of the wilderness.

There are drawbacks to their children having human lives and personalities before being chosen: not all share the goals of their divine mothers, and some choose to put their gifts to darker uses.

A few carry the blood of one woman who fled the corruption in search of a quiet life. Some joined the family by choice, some by accident; they come from highly varied backgrounds, and have diverse skills. Looking out for each other, unable to settle anywhere for long, they try to help humans when they can. Ultimately, there is no greater threat for them to tackle than the other children of the moons.

Moonblood isn't so much a novel as a series of adventures of varying length. They involve a core group of people, which does grow over time. They take place in a low-magic world, but despite that, our core cast are directly connected to the moons and have various abilities, including limited shapeshifting to a single individual animal form.

CONTENT WARNINGS: The single largest one is the central conflict between our heroes and the corrupted bloodline which has become a kind of cult. The cult in question works underground to destabilize areas they're active in. There is some sporadic physical violence, the actual consequences of which vary wildly, although probably not much more than one might expect in a fantasy adventure story. And just in case, be aware that, as you might expect from something with the title "Moonblood" and the description above, blood is significant.

Stories happen in different settings and cultures, and the levels of acceptance of prejudice of various kinds vary between them. "Convictions" in particular is  set in a city currently experiencing an epidemic of violence, including sexual violence, against women, and our heroes are there to change that.
