Sophia wasn’t happy with her life after having made some wrong decisions. Introverted and shy to the point it even hindered her from having basic interactions, she felt lonely from being unable to talk with women at all, the only gender she’s interested in.

The girl wanted to better herself, but Sophia couldn’t do so without help after all this time. This changed when she got into an accident that led to the end of the life she hated so much.

Someone calling himself an ‘overseer of worlds’ decided to save her from certain death. He gave her a second chance in a different world where even magic exists. He also ‘blessed’ her with many so-called boosts to make her life easier. Sophia took this chance and asked him to become more outgoing, confident, and the likes.

The overseer didn’t stop there, though. He boosted every emotion and personality trait, whether positive or negative. Her physical stats were no exception, either. To make things worse, those boosts also weren’t overly reliable. They occasionally overcompensated or even failed.

Sophia worked hard to deal with her new and complicated situation while doing her best in the new world. Exploring places, learning magic, finally finding friends, and possibly more while having a slow and easygoing life overflowing with fluff.

Unfortunately, she learned magic from a highly overpowered, easygoing, and somewhat unreliable teacher who became the girl’s first friend. This not only destroyed the last bit of her common sense, but Sophia’s application of magic became rather sloppy, causing one weird incident after another.

She met many new friends and had an easygoing life filled with fluff 96% of the time. Still, her vast powers and the lack of common sense, combined with her being beyond carefree while rarely thinking about the consequences of her actions, made her life anything but slow.

Most of the time, once you managed to get through the first ~20 chapters (and the parts where humans are involved), this story is the embodiment of FLUFF. Still, it can get a little suggestive without beating around the bush at times much later on. There's no actual NSFW stuff and nothing descriptive, either. Still, it will be clear that any couple has an active sex life that gets some mentions, including a few details, every now and then. The girls can be a little thirsty at times. <<less

Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other... more>> living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage.

Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture.

Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they?

Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive.

A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it.

Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price?

Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change; the Donovans and their allies are increasingly active in trying to improve life for free sensitives and protect tame ones. Then hunters find a copy of Van’s book about mages and sensitives… in the hands of a free sensitive. With charges of sedition and immorality against Van, for writing unbiased observations rather than accepted “truth” and for allowing it to reach free sensitives, the outcome of this hearing is going to have consequences far beyond his own fate.

*** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. ***

Generations ago, human explorers found a continent inhabited by an utterly alien culture of shapeshifting weyres and the shyani, humanoids who prefer dusk and dawn. A truce of sorts was eventually reached: humans claimed the rich lowlands, and the shyani and weyres retain the highlands. Along the border, practicality often rules, but on either side, old grudges linger in some hearts.

As a student physician, Corin tried to take his own life, unable to bear the countless tiny wounds inflicted over twenty-one years of lying to himself in order to be, or pretend to be, socially acceptable. At the last improbable instant, intervention came, in the form of a spirit fox, who led him away from the existence he’d known in the lowlands and into the highlands. There, a puma weyre rescued him, and a shyani shaman helped him find his true self and offered a rebirth, a life with no more lies, and an important role to fill.

Now a shaman and healer in her own right, Vixen who was once Corin learns that the one human who mattered to her in her previous life, then a fellow University student, has come into possession of an old shyani book, and the more fanatical shyani and weyres will stop at nothing to reclaim it and punish Jared. Even though it means going back into the lowlands and facing Jared as a woman, she can’t bear to just look the other way. This should be a short visit, just long enough to see the book into the proper hands and make sure Jared will not be killed for having it, and then she can return to the shyani community that has accepted her as their shaman. And, of course, her feline best friend Dayr insists on coming with her.

But Jared is now a Lord, with considerable wealth and power, and his response to her presence isn’t one she expected. After years living with the shyani, she sees everything around her from a new perspective, and that makes it difficult to keep to the plan of making as few waves as possible. As an honoured guest in a highborn house, with only Jared aware that she has ever been anyone else, Vixen finds herself questioning where she belongs: with Dayr and the shyani, who accept her gender without question but have to make allowances for her differences, or with humans, in the culture she grew up in even though her past would mean a major scandal?

Author's Note: Emergence is a story that existed in my head for a long time and I needed to get it out so I could move on in life. I put a lot of myself into it, which is to say that I wrote it solely for myself, and that it is difficult for me to return to in regards to editing.
